Here is one particularly interesting video we harvested from GameTrailers. This one right here is a video of The Elder Scrolls IV's graphical comparison for the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Now, now, fanboys. Let's not make this into a contest as to which is console actually more superior. The most important meat, after all, would be the gameplay, and that's something that goes beyond graphical superiority (although of course we admit that's part and parcel of a fantastic gaming experience).

Anyhow, what we would want you to do with this Elder Scrolls video is to open up your objective eye and try to spot as much graphical differences between the two versions. Is the contrast sharper in the PS3 version or the Xbox 360's? Are the hues more evenly splayed out in Oblivion for Sony or for Microsoft? What are the ups and downs of each console when it comes to this particular graphical juncture? Is there any imminent difference at all?

There, something healthy to chew on today. Remember, this is all for fun. So, have fun!

nice wrinkles on da ps3 for the "your familiar" guy

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-23
 » Wrinkles are the same...

You cannot see them as much on the 360 as it is actually reflecting the light from the torch onto the emperor's face and wall, which the PS3 is not.....there is also a highlight on the emperors fur lining and his amultet, that is not there on the PS3....

360 wins for lighting again...

   Re: Crow (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » LOL

They were pretty equal until the ruins just magically "appeared" on the 360 version. Up until that point, I could chalk up graphically differences to the low resolution of the trailer, but that DEFINITELY killed the 360 version. PS3 version is WAY better. Skin tones are way more life-like, bump-mapping is better, lighting is far more realistic.

Re: mr toasty (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » wasnt the 360 version...

Now don't get me wrong I'm all for ps3, but wasn't the 360 version released like last year?

Wouldn't that give developers a bit more time to refine the game when it was being made for PS3?

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-24
» Oh and another point for 360...

Not only better in lighting, but if you pause the video and look at the cobbled rocks as they approach the church near the end...You will notice 360 is actually bump mapping the stones to make them look rounded, whereas PS3 is just a flat, blurry texture....

   Re: HM (Unregistered) - 2007-03-24

"You will notice 360 is actually bump mapping the stones to make them look rounded, whereas PS3 is just a flat, blurry texture"

I noticed that too.

I'm sure all the PS3 fanboys would have noticed it too if the bump mapping was on the PS3 version and not the 360. ;)

they seem pretty equal to me, but the real strong point on the ps3 version is that those ruins didnt pop up in your face like the 360 version did (ive got it for the 360) anyways i think its pretty much the same thing, just kinda fixed framerate issues and loading times, i think the ps3 version is more like a patch that never came to the 360.

That is teh Most retarded thing i ever heard. The game is over a year old before the PS3 came out... so ofcourse they had extra time to work out the bugs and framerate issues.

Oblivion for PC and 360 had a TON of bugs.. Betheda knew it, and just fixed some of them later.

It does not matter that the PAL version was clsoer to the PS3 launch... Thats stupid that you would even say "well the PAL version was close so its a for comparison" When they didnt enhance teh Pal version...

No one knows how to code for PS3 because of its vastly different processor. So tell me its fair when the 360 version was probably just ported from PC which saves a massive ammount of time.

 » No.

Armored Core is better (only by fraction though) on the 360. Multiplatform games (such as CoD 3) were ALL better than their PS3 counterparts. Oblivion is an exception because it's uh, well, COMING OUT A YEAR AFTER THE 360 VERSION.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-23
 » Seriously ?

PS3 wins ? It's obvious that, once again, 360 has better lighting....look at the kings face on the side by side, 360 has the flickering torch casting light on his face, PS3 does not.

Then look at the outdoor scene, right when the 360 has to load, you will notice that the 360 has more trees in the background.

I will give that the PS3 seems to load quicker, and not have to load at all durring outdoors....but 360 is still looking better, especially in the lighting department.

Oh yeah, all you people that think it "looks brighter", well it does, but only because PS3 cannot/is not rendering true per pixel HDR lighting....same as in Ridge Racer and Armored Core....

   Re: gsd (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » In agree with Shatterdome

I'd actually say this game looks better on the 360 thanks to it being darker, I played the hell out of Morrowind which is pretty dark so to me Elder Scrolls games look better dark (plus it makes sense since there in ro artificial lighting yet in the time Oblivion is set in, that dungeon on the PS3 was a little too bright considering it had one little lamp lighting it)
   by Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23

The difference is smaller then I expected considering an extra year of coding. It's extremely obvious that these platforms are very close in performance.

I believe right now with the limited tools that have been out and the down right difficulty to code the Ps3 I think both systems are about equal for now.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » ...

PS3 developers got their dev kits 6 months after the 360 developers. And a year extra development and still no great improvement. What happened to blowing the 360 away from the gate. What happen to the next generation of gaming doesn't start until we say so? Yes PS3 development will improve, but so will the 360s. Face facts already.

   Re: Jin Wu - 2007-03-23
 » Devise Get A Clue

Devise, you don't have a clue dude! Who cares when they got kits? You say that like both versions started on the same day and the result is the work of an extra year of coding. This is a port for the ps3, nothing more. The port was just optimized, not reworked from the ground up like ninja gaiden's gonna be!

You don't know what you're talking about!

   Re: Constantinecy - 2007-03-23
 » Ok but

Device, I must agree with you for the first part they had so much time to make it look better, it does look better on the ps3 thats obvious (the ruins popping like that and the characters were more detailed, the far end landscape) but they had the coding long enough to make it far more better. The thing that the 360 will develop thats also undenible but keep in mind that when the ps3 first gen games are already winning over (not talking about exclusives gears is top for now, but wait for games like Killzone FFxIII and MGS4) 360's 2-3rd gen games. Developers are already receiving so many tools for the ps3 (that the didnt have while porting the Elder scrolls...) as we saw on GDC/07 so we should expect a giant leap from the ps3 very soon.

   Re: Seoulfood (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » hmm

They wouldn't graphically overhaul this game even if they had the time. The reason it took so long was because it was still hard to program for the PS3. If you have a game that sold millions of copies, then why bother doing a complete remake. This is a port, plain and simple. All they did was iron out some bugs. I don't understand why anyone should expect this to be amazingly better.

Do you really think we are going to see any cross platform games that look dramatically better on either system? Are you still living in fantasy land? What evidence can you reference to that will show me that the PS3 is graphically superior? Even the creator of MGS4 said that their is basically no difference between the 2. I can pull a link if you want me to.

   Re: fu (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » eromack

Your a moron. Oblivion looks best on PC and it is on a regular DVD9 - Same as the 360. The PS3 version had more time for optimization and because of this it does look better than the 360 version. Why is everyone fighting about this? You fanboys need to spend your time playing games and STFU. I will say one thing about this comparison though. The 360 versions TV is not properly calibrated(too dark) and they may have not defraged the hard drive before hand.

   Re: TheONE (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » Er hem Eromack!

"ps3 looks better because of all the info they can fit into the blue ray disk"

Eromack, the game is the same on BOTH (the devs said in an interview that they've made NO changes to the textures).

It's a year since the 360 version, and in that time Bethesda's programmers have written a new shader to improve the transition from background to foreground textures, hence improving the graphics overall. It's a TINY bit of code which will be seen on the 360 version via a patch.

http://ps3.qj.net/Bethesda-s-Pete-Hines-squashes-PS3-Oblivion-rumors-flat/pg/49/aid/82296

The game overall is bigger on the PS3 because the devs have duplicated the same data across the disk to speed up load times by reducing access time, since Blu-ray is slower than the DVD drive in the 360.

http://ps3.qj.net/Todd-Howard-on-Blu-ray-and-data-duplication/pg/49/aid/79719

So as pointed out already, the PC has the best looking version of the game, and it looks the best for the reasons I gave in that recent discussion we had.

BTW, a full installation of the PC version requires just 4.6GB of space on the HDD. *cough* ;)

   Re: eromack (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » uright the one

Admittedly, Blu-Ray looks dicey from several non-capacity angles. Blu-Ray movies require a 1.5x Blu-Ray drive, or 54Mbits/second. Sony announced that PS3 uses a 2x BD drive, which is 72Mbits/second or 9MB/second. The Xbox360 uses a 12x DVD, which should give it about 16MB/second. That is significantly faster for games and will result in shorter load times. And that 12x DVD drive should be a whole lot cheaper. (Note that the PS3 drive will do 8x DVD, and even that is faster than 2x BD.)cdrom reads at over 48 x but does it really matter at 750mb

Default video format has moved from 480i, or roughly 640x480 at 30 frames per second (9.2 million pixels per second), to 720p. 720p is 1280x720 at 60 frames per second (55.3 million pixels per second). That's about a 6x size increase. 6 x 2GB would again push us over the DVD-9 size.

The texture resolutions in games have increased closer to 16x, which would push us to 32GB if all that data was texture. Yikes!

 » Pretty close

The 360 had some serious pop-in in the wide open areas, but other than that they each had their pros and cons. Hard to tell from internet video, but it looked like the PS3 had a little bit stronger atmopheric effects, like when the sun was glaring around the tower. The 360 looked fine there, but the PS3 had a more tangible sense of air and haze.

Or hell, maybe it's all in my imagination. I wouldn't rule it out.

PS3 - much beter loading times and draw rate.
- better lighting
- stronger colours in some places

360 - in some areas, the colours are stronger
- better textures in some areas (e.g the cobbled roads in the town)

   Re: zecky (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » I pretty much agree

The loading times have been tweaked to hell using blu ray and duplicate data. But the colours for me look alot better in the 360 version overall. And the textures in everything are much deeper and more detailed in the 360 ones. Walls, stone pillars, floor everything looks better. A years extra development time has fixed popin issues but the bottlenecks of the ps3 has induced less detailed textures and duplicated data in blu ray. Its hardly ideal tbh.

   Re: lol (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » lol

They could have had the same load times in the 360 version. BOTH the PC and 360 had stutter problems. That had a full year to optimize the code on the PS3 version.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-23
 » Better lighting ?

Wtf are you talking about...

Look at the side by side of the emperor (the old guy), right away you can see that the 360 is reflecting the flickering torchlight off the emperors face and the wall behind him....the PS3 version is not doing that...

The lighting on the PS3 sucks ass, and is always the reason games look "brighter" on PS3, because they are not using per pixel HDR lighting....

Re: Sad sad people. (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » To Shatterdome

Dude, you really need to get a life. You're actually spending your time worrying about something like this that was more than likely caused from the player standing in a slightly different proximity from emperor's beautifully torch lit face. LMAO!

Cross platform games are always going to be lame. Games of this type always default to the lowest common denominator, and never take advantage of the superior systems graphical strengths or abilities since it would take too long to port the game with all new and improved graphics. Taking a look at first party games, it's clear that the PS3 has some major power behind it, and only needs time for devs to start creating games based on it's abilities.

Cross platform games have always been dumbed down to the lowest common denominator, and as sorry as it is, in this situation it's the 360 that's holding us all back. Sad.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-24
 » No...

Because that side by side comparison is from a cutscene when the emperor talks, and it takes you to the same viewpoint regardless of where the player is standing....so try again...

So I wonder why when 360 is the lowest denominator, PS3 can't do lighting as well as it ?

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-24
» Not only lacking in lighting...

But I just noticed, at the end as they are approaching the church in town.

360 is using bump-mapping to make the cobbled stones look rounded, but PS3 is lacking any bump+mapping and just has a flat blurry texture....explain that if 360 is so inferior ?

I have a feeling DMC4 will have a much bigger difference from PS3 to 360.. because I think that DMC4 was built from the ground up originally intended as a PS3 title... so I'd imagine it would preform better then the 360 counterpart. I could be wrong but thats my guess.

   Re: zecky (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » depends

if they always had the intention to go multi platform then it would have been created on a pc or 360 since both are easy to port between then ported to the ps3. Or it could be in development on the ps3, and in development on a pc/360 with two different teams. Each building thier own engine.

Development does not work like that. All game use close or all 100% of a systems power. The PS3 version does look better. Although the only way to determine which system is graphically superior is by comparing two console exclusives. At this point, the only fair compairison that could be made is between Gears and Resistance, but even that isn't fair because Resistance was a launch title. The best way to compare would be to take Gears and compare it to a cutting edge PS3 exclusive a year from now.

A year from now? The best way would be to wait till the end of both consoles life cycles and see which had the best looking game over all. Apart from that, wait till November then compare best GoW with PS3's top, not a whole year. GoW came a year after the 360, PS3 has been out for 4 months. It only has 8 more to surpass Gears.

I have this friend whos brother works at a huge gaming company wich name I can´t tell but it´s a two letter name :)

He told me that the cell processor is incredible hard to program so what they have done is to let the PS3 emulate an xbox360 so they just can port the 360games.

If this is really true? I don´t know but i doubt it. I mean com on, maby they just porting the engine that is optimized for the 360, but emulating it?

   Re: Stupid (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23

Well, it´s possible. I mean the cellprocessor is far more powerfull than the 360´s. Emulating the 360´s processors is no match for the PS3, but the GPU could get harder, wich could explain the lack of image quality in early PS3 Games

1) If you are a halfway decent programmer with any grasp of the concept of multi-threading, programming the Cell is no different than programming a standard processor, except it runs better with multiple tasks.

2) Yes, the PS3 Cell 64 bit octo-core processor CAN indeed easily outperform a DUAL core pentium, as evidenced by the Folding@Home project, and it can do so within the feasibility of emulation.

So after that year it runs better and looks better than the 360 version. Do you want a *****ing prize? I am fresh out of college and I could have done that by my self in my mothers basement.

All I have to say is that when you watch both systems during the fight the 360 jumps around literally it was horrible, PS3 was smooth, but mostlikely due to 1 year extra development time. Improving over the PC and 360 version. I'm pretty sure the developers will take what they have learned from the PS3 version and try to update the other two versions to give them a speed boost, but I dont know if they can fix the type of slow down that I saw through out the video.

I remember this game, it was pretty good. Thinking about re-installing it on my PC, I mean, since its old and all the cool people beat it long ago. So I hear the PS3 just got this game, good for you. Maybe Sony will get cool games sooner next time eh. Neh :p

» XBOX360 will look better in the future

The PS3 won't look better for a long time! Bethesda said that there will be a graphical update for the XBOX360, so XBOX will look better than PS3.

 » ...

Only the shader update.

No confirmation on the draw distance increase, but then again the Xbox360 stutters alot more then the PS3 or PC version on a decent system, increasing the draw distance means more strain on the system and more stutters.

   Re: TheONE (Unregistered) - 2007-03-23
 » Hmmm

That's rather dumb logic Vietone.

Lair at CES this year was reported to have BIG problems with framerate. It's quite obvious of course that further optimizations are needed to improve the framerate, but at some stage, developement will have to stop and the game engine locked down before release. So even when the game is released, Factor 5 will probably find other ways they could have improved performance, and these improvements will make there way into the game engine of a sequel (if there is one).

So more time means further optimizations and improvements can be made, even for released games. Bethesda has made improvements to the game ENGINE itself, so the patch from Bethesda is not for the shader ONLY, it also includes improvements to the game engine for both the 360 and PC. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, but it's resonable to assume that the performance will be improved on both the 360 and PC versions, and so the PS3 and patched 360 version may look and perform about the same.

We'll see.

"Bethesda said that there will be a graphical update for the XBOX360, so XBOX will look better than PS3."

I expect they will look about the same.

 » Well...

Don't foget PS3 users also have to install 5 gigs of the game onto their HDD's in order to achieve this.

You would be a blind fanboy if you didn't admit the PS3 can crunch numbers faster. Look at folding @home, 3000 ps3's are doing the work of 100,000 PC's.....unfortunately, that doesn't transfer into general use for gaming very well.

But, when it comes to crunching numbers in order to fill a room with and place objects, then the PS3 should have the advantage there...hence the supposed reduced amount of time to enter rooms n such.....the lack of popup outside could be optimization, having info on the HDD, the cell, or magic pop-up faries....

 » re: vietone

the shader update is actually for better distant textures.

the reason the game stutters in places is because it's streaming off the dvd and can't do this fast enough at times.

and shouldn't we really be doing these comparisons after the 360 gets the update?

How are you supposed to do a decent comparison when these the comparison videos are highly compressed and running at less than a tenth of the real resolution?

This is judging next gen visuals based on standard def commericals.

Totally freaking pointless.

 » Yeah...

it'd be like watching a side by side of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray off of a VHS cassette and expecting to be able to tell the differences...yeah right...

» A extra year means alot

If they had an extra year to iron out all of the bugs why is there only a minor improvement in the graphics? Because the two systems can do just about the same thing visually. Yeah maybe the ps3 version looks better but what about all the multi platform games like NFS carbon that look better on the x box. And these games came out together.

» I think the PS3 version looks better.

But that does not mean I am going to go out and buy that version. I own Elder Scrolls on the 360 and do not want to waste more money for the same game even if it looks a little better.

 » PS3 a tad better

The PS3 only looks better in some areas. Some areas I cant even tell the difference. The 360 has a lot more pop ups than the PS3 version. THats the only real difference in these games.

 » hummmm

on the ps3, the game looks more like the PC version ( which I have ), on the xbox 360, the shadows are looking more darker, but the range of things appears better ( from farther ) on the ps3. hard to tell which is the best!

Every comparison I've seen with multiplat games on PS3 and Xbox 360 have been just about equal. The only difference has been that the 360 for some reason like to make the brightness almost nonexistant while the PS3 uses ordinary brightness levels.

Almost every 360 game tones down darkness almost all the way and contrast up so it can shine through the dark. If you look at the games not designed for such dark conditions, they look like garbage. Take Armored Core for example, alot of the stages are so dark all you see is black. Meanwhile, games utilizing it like Gears of War look fantastic.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-03-23
 » uhh...

That is called per pixel HDR lighting...

and the reason games like Armored Core, and to an extent this comparison look "too dark" is that you cannot show the subtle changes in light in a shadow on a crappy low res web vid, so that shadow just comes out look a straight dark colour.....but in reality if you play armored core, and go down that tube, you can see all the details, they are just overall dark...because you are in a tunnel with no lights....duh...but in the vid it looks like you can't see a thing.....I really wish these comparisons would come out on HD vids....

It's like trying to compare the two HD video formats from a comparison on a VHS cassette...

 » *note*

Id like to point out that a) PS3's costs about £150 more then 360's and b) that bethesda said that they had to do a complete overhaul on the engine due to the fact that PS3's are different to 360's (blatantly)

I like to think that i can live without the £150 wrinkles on that chaps face for a few weeks until the patch comes out. As for loading time etc, yes, the 360 does load, well done. As for the popping up ruins, it happens sometimes, and sometimes it doesnt. This time it did, and people are basing their lives on it. crikey.

They are both good, one doesnt have to be better, ones cheaper, ones not. As long as it works eh ^^ first one that brings out pac-man world 7 or something wins it.

» i donyt know if yall noticed this but i did

when u see the white pillars in the field,on the 360 version they started poping in as u got closer........but on the ps3 version,u could see them from a distance and dident half 2 get close 4 it 2 pop in ,cuase it was always there

wtf forget the *****ing wrinkles retards who gives a ***** about that? focus on the decorations on his clothing, thats a huge *****ing difference imo.

as a owner of 360, i declare imba. the ps3s much better after all.

PS3 had better on faces, but 360 had better lighting and less haze. 360 also had better textures in many places. I expected the PS3 version to be WAY better since it is a game that is coming out 1 year later!

I'd imagine you can only do so much with a lack of physical RAM. 256Mbs of it doesn't cut it.
