7200 rpm HDD - Image 1After tinkering with the Sony PlayStation 3 and replacing its 5400 rpm hard drive with another that clocks at 7200 rpm, poster hotpocketdeath from the Official US PlayStation Forums ran some tests and found out that a faster HDD does indeed yield better results.

The first test involved running the 7200 rpm HDD to find out if it can cause overheating. Turns out it only produces slightly more heat - a mere five degrees Fahrenheit increase than the original PS3 HDD, which can easily be disregarded.

Next up, games downloaded from PSN were installed using both hard drives to finally see if one performs better over another. Among the four demos,  Tony Hawk experienced a 40-second faster installation process while others chopped 10 seconds off at most.

When games were actually played, no significant improvements were observed. Some would appreciate how loading got faster by one or two seconds, but others shrug the small numbers off. On the good side, the faster HDD does provide better speeds, but it can be risky to mod your machine.

A faster harddrive performs better ? Go figure...

 » why?

why would you want to do this? just to load your games quicker? grow up and have a bit of patience! not knowing the long term effects, why would you risk *****ing up your machine, by running it 5 degrees hotter then it was designed for, just to get tony 'not half as good as skate' hawks to load 40 seconds faster

Why are you so angry Sonofken, it's not your PS3. And who exactly are you insulting, lmao.

sonofken why should you care, its not your system. If they was to mess with theirs they can do whatever they want. Its like PS3forums.com or whatever its that was tested the PS3 is many environments to see its failure rate. Seriously shut up. They can piss on it for all i care as long as its not mine or anyone's here.

I have to disagree Quixand, why should anyone here care what they do with their systems.

Wow, its not modding if its in the instruction manual! lol now time to try it with a 10000 rpm drive.

Why's everyone swapping out their hard drive? I think 60gb 5400 RPM is fine.

   Re: antbing - 2007-10-03
 » I need more than 60gb

I installed Linux and have quite a bit of video, music and photos on my 60gb drive. I have less than 10gb left and have recently been looking at buying a 250gb drive to upgrade with. I will be putting in a 5400rpm though.

 » Hello, MCS!

It's been a while since I have been on QJ. I see that you still have your PS3. I hope that you are starting to enjoy it more.

My reason is that I keep some of my music and the majority of the available demos for my six year old son to play with. If I only let him play the demos I do not need to worry about him changing discs when he wants to play another game. Six year olds change their minds frequently.

Everybody has their reasons for choosing to upgrade or choosing not to upgrade. All of them are valid. That is why using an actual HDD was a good decision by Sony.

Hey Folding,

Long time no see. How've you been? Playing any new games recently?

Talk to you later,
MTK

got that right my friend... no changing of disk for the kids..

my daughter wants to play it's super rub a dub or calling all cars.. last night she played the Folklore demo (man that's a LONG demo) and even let her drive in the Sega Rally demo.

It's been far to long. I have been very busy recently between work and family. My youngest is almost one year old and the six year old has just started Cub Scouts.

Unfortunately this has kept me from playing much other than the demos they throw our way every Thursday. It looks to me like many of the games that are starting to appear on the horizon will be worth purchasing, though. I only hope to find a little more time to play with my PS3 in the near future.

Have a great day, MTK!

When did this turn into a discussion about your kids? Didn't you know having kids detracts from playing games 24/7? lol

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Think OUTSIDE the box! Screw these platter based HDD's.

I got my hands on a 64GB SSD. Close to NO heat and performs slightly better then a 7200 drive!

+4GB!
Cooler temp PS3
Faster PS3

Too bad I couldn't keep it :(
