As some recent events indicate, the community is beginning to make headway in cracking open Sony's PlayStation 3 console. The PS3News site's dev has announced that they have successfully decrypted ELF file from a PS3 game disc. Quoting CJPC's post regarding the details: This removes BOTH the disc layer of encryption on the EBOOT.BIN, as well as the file layer of encryption. |

THIS IS GONNA LEAD TO MUCH MORE!!! hoping to see psp style stuff soon.
its got going to be any good. you HAVE yo upgrade your ps3 if you want to access the interent
Unfortunately, they've done a little better job with the PS3 as far as making sure people need to update. Accessing anything online checks to make sure you're running the latest firmware. They could easily ban your machine if they detect any custom firmware running on it. Not a risk worth taking, IMHO. With PSP, this is much more difficult for Sony to control due to the reduced dependency on online features and lack of firmware checks before using such features.
However, if this crack leads to the ability to make "signed" homebrew apps, which I think is more likely given the nature of this hack, well, then that's entirely different. You won't need custom firmware to run homebrew. You'll just need to know how to write/install apps to work on the PS3. Hello emulators!
They already know that. They're more interested in getting HB running on the linux side of things.
Just set your PS3 custom firmware to report it is the latest Sony Firmware. PSP did the same sort of thing for games that required a certain version.
heres a screen shot??? is that some sort of joke??? lol
that could say anything as far as my inspector gadget eyes can see!!!
That should enlarge it to more humanly acceptable settings :)
Something is wrong with your image resizing code.
For months when I click an image I just get exactly the same image again. It looks like other people are having this problem too.
@VgSlag:
Make sure you don't have NoScript or Scriptblocker on with Firefox or check if you have enabled Java.
Noscript blocks the resizing code.
Otherwise, I have no clue why it won't work. :(
it's ok to have noscript, just make sure you allow the domain qj.net
if u use internet explorer, get rid of it as soon as possible :-)
Thing is, with me, sometimes the script works, sometimes it doesn't. on some images it works, on other it doesn't...
Doesn't work for me in FF or IE.
anyone in the ps3 scene would know that anything from PS3NEWS is complete crap and all of their work has never been proven or released. the claim to have the latest sdk for the ps3 but wont share it with the scene??? Now why would a team hinder cracking the ps3 by hogging the sdk and not allow others to help by releasing their work. the psp scene is where its at because someone released their work and another improved it with greedy developers the scene gets nowhere.
Totally agreed, for there to even be a "scene" there needs to be communication.
The rumored "leaked" PS3 SDK may have a fingerprint/watermark on it that can be traced back to the leaker. Perhaps the people claiming to have it have ties to legit users and don't want them to lose their jobs? Just a theory, but it seems plausible...
I supposed you would like them to also lend out their dev unit? Not likely.
Dont be a dumbs*** ISOHaven you should know if there is no cooperation in hacking a system then its not gonna happen. and we dont need their dev unit for all we care they can stick it up their A** but with out the sdk we cannot run unsigned 1st level code on the ps3.
HAHAHA!!! Too funny. Whatever you say bro.
For everyone else, the SDK is useless until the system is able to run the software you create with the SDK and the system will never be able to run home made apps without the aid of a dev unit.
As for cooperation, there is plenty going on via various teams over at PS3News.
Go cry your river where someone cares.
Look PS3News isnt the only place to find a dev unit. StreetSkaterFU And others on PS3Haxs Have Dev Units. Who Helped Release Elf to Self??? StreetSkaterFU And Others From PS3Hax. Before You go around talking like you know whats going on and who your talking too learn about it and whats going on around this scene. NOW SHOW ME ONE RELEASE FROM PS3NEWS??? NOT A DAMN THING THEY ARE JUST AS FAKE AS THE ISO LOADER PROMISED BY A TEAM LAST YEAR. PS3HAX ARE RELEASING WHAT THEY HAVE FOUND TO THE PUBLIC.
"Look PS3News isnt the only place to find a dev unit."
Who said it was? You hearing things inside that head of yours?
"Who Helped Release Elf to Self???"
Who cares? That's not what this news is about......"help"...HAHAHA!!!!!
"Before You go around talking like you know whats going on and who your talking too learn about it and whats going on around this scene."
I've proven enough and my previous comment stands. You obviously hate one over the other. Everyone can see that and I doubt anyone cares.
So, is anyone over at PS3HAX letting people use their DEV unit? HELL NO! You claim they release EVERYTHING they make??? I've seen the download section over there. There's NOTHING IN IT but linux tuts and emulators that are available EVERYWHERE.
There is nothing to release! No one has done anything yet. Not anything that does common users any good.
Come on fanboy, lets hear you "defend" your boys some more even though no one is saying anything about them to begin with. HAHAHA!!!!!
StreetSkaterFU and Team Ice are liars and scam artists. They have nothing.
i see the crackers use kde....
This is a fake!!!
If they did do this it would be ready for download!
Where is the proof... ps3news.com try and shutdown other hackers and sites. THEY are the people who tried to get DAX put away!
What would be ready for download? Some extremely large, disc dependant tut? What need do you have to decrypt an ELF file?
This is ONE step in many. Once something tangible is ready they'll release it. This is just one step bud, it can't do anything on its own.
Yes that's exactly what they should do. They should post the source for a proof of concept that decrypts this disc. That way, other people can actually verify that it's authentic and build on what they've done
You still haven't given a valid reason as to WHY they should.
Very if it's authentic? That would only matter if they cared about what other people thought.
You also ASSume it's something in which to give out code. It could be and mostly likely is, much more complicated then that. You act as if it's a simple EXE file.
Was ELF2SELF created in one night? NO! Did they give ME the source code when they were half way done? NO!
You'll get what you get when it's ready.
Let's assume this is legit. If they didn't care what other people thought, they wouldn't have posted anything. OBVIOUSLY they want credit for something, don't you think? Releasing that source would mean they could fully get that credit.
And as I already said, others can build on the work. And when that theoretical someone takes it to the next level they should share it right back. Sharing this kind of stuff is what made the psp homebrew scene what it is.
Yes, obviously they would have to write up some instructions to go with it. I never said it would be as simple as an exe (which don't run on linux anyway) but they obviously _wrote_ something to do this. I don't know what it is you think they used, other than code to decrypt this.
I never said "give this to me now" or in "one night" or anything like that. I only said that they should do it.
Credit for work done has nothing to do with what other people think about them. You failed to prove a point.
"but they obviously _wrote_ something to do this."
This is where you assume again, who said anything about someTHING? More then likely, at this point, it's a bunch of complicated somethingS.
You still haven't given any good reason why them or any other group should do other then what they are currently doing.
"I never said "give this to me now" or in "one night" or anything like that. I only said that they should do it."
Nice back-peddle! Who said they wont? Your post said they SHOULD POST SOURCE. Anyone is going to think you meant NOW.
NO ONE told you they would NEVER post source. So what the point was of your comment is beyond me.
FACT - Team ICE never gave me source DURING their project.
No one at PS3News should give anyone source DURING their projects either. So why you and PSP NIKOS are claiming otherwise is beyond me and most likely anyone else.
Yes I have proven it. Wanting credit from someone means you care what they think of you. That's what credit means. That someone things highly of you. What is the name "Team ICE" for? it's all about the perception and recognition that comes with putting something meaningful behind that name.
Yes! you're right, I'm sure it is a bunch of complicated somethings! That doesn't mean those somethings can't be shared or the source for them can't be shared. It doesn't change anything. It's still all code. What do you think they used, an abacus?
Whatever you read into my comment about when I might want things is your problem, not mine buddy. You're the only one backpedalling here, your post clearly indicated that you thought they shouldn't release anything until they have a finished product, like an iso loader or a hello world. At which point, who gives a ***** if they release source or not? The point is for other people to benefit and help the whole community towards these goals.
Why do you keep pointing out that they never gave you their source code during a project. Are you bitter or something?
This project is finished. It's a system that cracks this disc. There's no reason why they should have a problem sharing it. If it was only half working, I could see your point. But they claim that it decrypts the whole disc. You don't seem to really understand how this works.
And what you wrote on the article about ELF2SELF totally proves my point, clearly you tested that release and found it to be crap, so let them release whatever they made to decrypt this disc and we can all determine whether it's crap or not and move on with our lives. And if they don't release it we can take that as proof that they have nothing.
"Wanting credit from someone means you care what they think of you."
WRONG! Credit FROM and credit FOR are two different things. Obviously there's a language barrier here.
"That's what credit means. That someone things highly of you."
WRONG! I can give someone credit for doing something specific and still think poorly of them. Go back to school.
"That doesn't mean those somethings can't be shared or the source for them can't be shared. "
What part of THEY AINT FINISHED YET did you not understand? There is nothing to give.
"What do you think they used, an abacus?"
Yeah, that's exactly what I think. You got me.
"Whatever you read into my comment about when I might want things is your problem, not mine buddy."
No, it's not. You responded to a comment from a guy that wants it NOW NOW NOW. So that would make it YOUR problem, "buddy".
"your post clearly indicated that you thought they shouldn't release anything until they have a finished product, like an iso loader or a hello world."
That would be an ASSumption on your part. Is ELF2SELF an iso loader or hello world? NO! But it's a finished piece of the puzzle....or so we thought. For the same reason they didn't give out source code for an unfinished ELF2SELF, neither should PS3News. You seem to be having a REAL hard time understanding that part.
"Why do you keep pointing out that they never gave you their source code during a project. Are you bitter or something?"
Because you keep telling us PS3News should release source code so someone else can finish it. The point is, which you fail at, is that NO ONE else does that.
"This project is finished. It's a system that cracks this disc."
WRONG!!! You don't even know what the hell you're talking about.
"You don't seem to really understand how this works."
HAHAHA!!!! That's rich!
"so let them release whatever they made to decrypt this disc and we can all determine whether it's crap or not and move on with our lives"
Oh brother!!!! You just don't get it.....so sad. You have obviously never writen code for a large scale project. Just giving it to someone isn't always that easy.
When it's finished "ENOUGH" to distribute, they will.
"And what you wrote on the article about ELF2SELF totally proves my point, clearly you tested that release"
Clearly? Learn how to read then come back and continue arguing!
If you would.. could you clarify what "isn't finished" in PS3News' work? The article states that they've successfully decrypted EBOOT.bin from a Playstation 3 game disk, and i think what Cydonos was getting at was: why can't this file be released?
I can understand that this file alone won't achieve homebrew on the PS3, and that from this standpoint - their work isn't finished. But releasing they've done so far could greatly advance the PS3 homebrew community... so why not release it?
Just because they're able to do "something" doesn't mean it's all bundled up in one one nice clean little ball for everyone to use.
"why can't this file be released"
What file? You mean you want the EBOOT.BIN file they decrypted? Or you think the ability to do this is all bundled up in a file?
I believe handing out the EBOOT.BIN file would be illegal to begin with. Secondly, go on over there and ask it. I'm sure they'll tell you exactly why they don't.
i don't think this will amount to anything
Seriously, why do you people always jump on a custom firmware being made for the PS3. It's not going to happen just like that, if at all. Remember the first homebrew for the PSP? Wasn't the greatest was it? Expect that IF this actually leads to something. But DO NOT expect something as powerful as a custom firmware coming onto the PS3.
Well it may lead to something good in the future. Perhaps another exploit? Perhaps something like xLoader or eLoader? Never know. Maybe it's time to stop insulting Team ICE cause your jelous of them people. I seen on the forums people are insulting Team ICE like crazy, saying this is crap well, i'd like to see YOU do something better. Ok, this is the first real exploit ever on the PS3 and it's about time people start RESPECTING the developers. I bet you'd respect them immediadely if they came out and said there DAX now wouldn't you? Just like you all did with M33. I remember, you all said "oh this crap sucks, I aint using it, look at all these updates released in one day" then, right after it was announced that it was made by DAX you all said, "Oh this is awesome, I can't believe he releases so many updates in one day, this firmware is da bomb!"
We all remember YOU saying that.
