Dutch blog PS3 Sense reports that hackers have succeeded in loading backup games (view here) in the PlayStation 3, following an almost forgotten feat that was once promulgated by self-proclaimed hackers of Team ICE. While German hacker and Team ICE member StreetSkaterFU demonstrated via video (view here - requires Apple Quicktime Software) how the feat was accomplished, in a surprising turn of events, PSP homebrew sceners Alek and Mathieulh confirmed that the exploit was actually doable and real. A full video in Apple Movie format was released demonstrating how StreetSkaterFU was able to get Warhawk to run without the Blu-ray Disc. Despite the quality and size of the video, the developer claims that this demonstration is not fake. Take note, however, that both StreetSkaterFU and Alek say that this is just a proof of concept for the moment. Moderator FreePlay of the QJ.NET Forums says that the exploit is actual pretty simple. But according to FreePlay, the exploit is only doable if you have a second hard drive handy and have a good sense of timing. Discussions are currently going on at the forums, but the mechanics of the exploit or its processes have not been revealed. Stay tuned for more updates. "you say tomato..." is a phrase you use when two people call THE SAME THING different names.

If you haven't noticed, X360 is getting more good games then the PS3, and it has piracy.
If this gets people the buy the PS3, its was the system needs. Piracy on the PS3 will not be like the PSP. PS3 games take a hell of a lot longer to download.

Mathieulh and Alek *confirmed* that it worked; the public announcement of the discovery came from StreetSkaterFU.
As for me figuring out how it can be accomplished, I only figured out half of it (the process of actually getting the game installed). How you RUN the thing is beyond me.

first Warhawk, next Motorstorm.
it seems that the original disk is necessary to kick off the booting process. then it can be replaced with any retail disk, and after the game starts up no disk is required.

games nowadays are so big, you'd fill up your hard drive faster than [insert hillbilly metaphor here]! i used to pirate psp games, and after seeing what happened to that system, i've got to say, leave the ps3 alone. it's already having a hard enough time as it is. we don't need to give developers another reason to give away our exclusives.

Let's pave the way for piraters! That's just what everyone needs. They'll eventually finish it and release it, and next thing you know, it's the PSP all over again. I don't see what the point is in them even doing this. I don't care that they do it, but if they release it to the public, that'll be a ***** move.

Sadly, I doubt there is any way to stop the release of an iso loader if one is found. I suppose we can only hope 25+ gigabyte isos can deter people from downloading them.

Troll more, you daft f*ck.
It's simple because I figured it out simply from someone's offhand comment about updater code. It's a freaking DNS redirection hack.
In case you didn't notice, every time I've knocked PS3 "hackers" in the past, it was because they were frauds.

I didn't say that. What I said is they did something YOU didn't. Why can't you appreciate people who manage to get something, ANYTHING, running on an extremely restricted piece of hardware (PS3)? And yes, you have made useful things, however you have NOT made anything (or figured out anything) that allows running something, ANYTHING, on the PS3.

Like others have said, running backups is just bad for the industry. I want to play good games. I am willing to pay for good games. I don't need some (a lot of) cheap ass-holes ruining it for me. The developers have a hard enough time as it is, and good developers should be rewarded for good games.
If anything, I would much rather prefer to hear of some hardware mod-chip breakthroughs. a) the "breakthrough" probably wouldn't be fake like this news most likely is (give me some details instead of names I don't even know), and b) it will keep the pirate scene down to a relatively small group of people.

i mean seriously why do people act as if the psp died and did a miserable job?
and as if homebrew had anything to do with it...
i mean probably like 2 out of 10 people know what custom firmware is.
i had kids all around my school saying wth is that?
and none had a clue what u could hack into a psp.
and as for selling.
it doesnt sell so bad.
its only sad it didnt get so many good titles.

The DS is even easier to Mod and code for than the PSP. But the psp is already losing titles +[
If this keeps on with the PS3 it will end up like the PC. Good games for PC lways come 1 or 2 years later than on consoles because its so easy to exploit. Even games you have to pay for are downloadable for free.
If this is released it will be bad for the marketing of i and will soon die.

That's why devs shy away from the PSP. Assuming but not conceding that 2/10 people know bout CFW and ISOs, that translates to big sales losses. Everyone knows that most of the money in the business comes from software.
So yeah, I think CFW did hurt the PSP, with all due respect to the brew scene,

R4 does exist, but it doesn't get into the US and EU as easily as CFW. With CFW, all u need is the software, a PSP, and a memstick. Anyone can get that easily. With R4, you'd have to find a bootlegger to sell the chip to you. That's not as easy as downloading CFW.

Even though I dont like this whole idea, the video shows him using the warhawk disc in the first place, he just found out a was to play it without a disc, AFTER the disc has already been used to load some things.
Anyway, as alot of people have said, dont let what happened to the psp happen to the ps3.

I a couple of months ago would have said great about this, and the sad thing is I will actually probably use it as well, it's abit hard to resist the playing of games you don't have to pay for.
I find people citing that back-ups have been going for years and they never really did any damage, and that might be the case to an extent, but I think the difference between now and then is the internet, and the fact that more people have access now than ever and this information is available to them, where as years ago most would have never known about all this and there for wouldnt have done it. But now they have the information available to them, more and more people will exploit they're systems than ever meaning a bigger loss to the gaming companies.
Realistically I do not think this will kill the systems, the 360 and the Wii is still going strong, so why people think this will make a bigger difference towards the PS3 as apose to those systems is beond me. But I do think all the systems being hacked this time around will cause a massive problem for systems in the future. For the price of the systems and the games. But I think that will just cause hackers to want to hack it even more due to the fact no one will be able to afford to buy the games anyway.

Most people have a 40gb PS3, so whats the point? Downloading a "back up" game would almost consume the whole PS3's HDD, not to mention installing the game as well.
Why don't people try to hack into the PS3's Cell processor and unleashes its awesome power. I bet we can do a lot more things with that, then playing "back ups".

360 games are rather compressed or fit on a DVD9. They are then upscaled to HD by the 360.
PS3 games have most, if not all, of their games uncompressed in HD format.
I hope SONY updates their firmware soon.
Respect the developers and give something back to them. They created our entertainment. You can hate SONY as much as you want but the developers are the ones that provide us with entertainment.

the blu ray version of warhawk installs the whole game on to your hard dive anyway, if you look the blu ray version installs 700 odd MB's of data on your hardrive and the PSN download is the exact same size as the install. ive done this before, i was playing warhawk when my bro accidently ejected the disk, and i kept playing i even loaded up new maps and stuff like that without the disk even being in the drive, the disk is just needed to start the game then it is not used again whilst playing

OMG,
i cannot honestly believe how newbish the QJ readers are.
are you all too young to remember any other console than there next gen flavours?
lets start...
do any of you remember the PS1, PS2? piracy scene was far more widespread than the PSP even touched upon. it was the PS1/PS2 that made sony what they are today (in the console world).
the reason the PSP died is because it was simply crap (and dont flame me fan boys) i have one and even got into the scene when there actually was one, the piracy didnt kill the psp, the psp did.
xbox anyone? yup piracy there too, did it kill the xbox
dreamcast? okay bad choice here on my part, but it wasnt the piracy that killed that either.
so the question is will piracy kill the PS3? will it f*ck. what will kill the ps3 is like the psp the lack of any real substance (again dont flame me fan boys) i have one and i love it, but the sheer fact of the matter is i can only name a handful of decent titles (released thus far) that are worth paying 40+ quid for.
i can only hope (as i am) that the coming year will be more properous and we will finally see some games that PS3 deserves

» Cool, I'm impressed
The video looks okay, I wonder if it's real. If it is, it's GREAT! The x360 and the wii already have their own chips, if I could backup my games on the ps3, I'd be really happy. (And hoping the next update won't crash our hopes, lol)

» Meh......
It cool that theres some work on PS3 Isos; however, personally (as almost everyone has said before :p) not only would it cost too much to get the eqipment need to rip and store the games, but its not really needed. As much as i hate paying $60 a game; keep in mind, you dont have to buy your PS3 games at Gamestop, EB, Best Buy, etc. The internet has great deals on certain games. Some times you can get them more than half off. Not only that, if PS3 games become pirated, it could once again lead a system to its doom (RIP PSP and Dreamcast :( ). Personally, i really think (if they can) they should look into a way to play imported PS1 and PS2 games on PS3. I mean, you spend a $1000 on the tv, $500 on your PS3, and a majority of import games cost about $30-$50 bucks usually. Not only that, if you have a certain import for PS1, i find it funny that even thou you own the disc, the only way you can play it on any PS3 is to buy the damn game again on the PSN. >:( Grant it, i do have a modded PS2; however, id like to play my imports on my 42 inch Insignia (via HDMI). XD

» for me !
this is not a major breakthrough...i just want to know why it is called (ps3 backups running) if he used an original warhawk disc to start the game...the only thing that will make me buy ps3,is to see REAL backups running via a hdd or copied blue-ray which i think will never happen....

» dont tell me
don't tell me piracy and other stuff....u know the ps3 40 gig console where i live is $581 ...just imagine (THE 40 GIG) and u know how much the games cost....even if the game is old or stupid they don't reduce the price which is $79 always!!!
so i don't care about playing pirated games because its a rip off to buy them .... and i am 16 unfortunately so no work for me!! :(

» Poor you
It isn't a rip off to buy them. -_- You buy them because they give you hours of entertainment and to show respect to the developers.
I'm unemployed and games cost $100. The 40GB costs $800. I'm still able to pull through fine.
People can complain about the PSP not having much third party support, less games, but I bet more than half of those people pirate.

That sucks for both of you. The 80gb PS3 here is 400 bucks, last time I checked. The most I've seen a PS3 game go for is 60 bucks.

» psp having no games is BS
there are tons of japanese psp games. yakuza 3, guilty gear xx accent core, infinite loop, phantasy star portable, bleach: heat the soul series, super robot taisen, medical 91, memories off 2, umihara kawase, ikuze gen-san, initial d, macross, star ocean, etc.
the american/european/english/canadian (anyone outside japan) devs are just too lazy. that's all. how come japan releases tons of games for every consoles (except the 360)? hmm..maybe because 99% of video game systems came from japan from atari, sega mega drive, nintendo 64, playstation, etc (360, anyone?)

» Oh ffs...
Even if this is real i don't think people will start downloading games at like 25 GB. This is so god damn lame. What we should focus on is to get real homebrew running on the PS3, not backups. Nobody wants to buy a blu-ray burner for like 300 bux and then buy a god damn blu-ray disc for 25 bux and also download 25 gigs of some game that's gonna take like a week or something. No, what people really want is emulators. N64, Dreamcast, PSP, Genesis maybe even Xbox?
Screw backups. Give us homebrew instead!

» they should at least
make it so that the iso will only play on the ps3 that made the backup

» great, just great
this is bull*****. this could kill the ps3 in a very real way. we just have to hope that a quick firmware update can nip it in the bud! that's where ps3 has the advantage over psp because the PSN makes updating more or less mandatory.

Not really, both the Wii and 360 have their own services where you purchase games, both new and old. Both systems also require firmware updates from time-to-time to circumvent running of "backups" on their systems. Both systems seem to be doing just fine. Remember, the userbase of people who known about homebrew/exploits/iso loading is very small compared to the amount of legit users who purchase their games at full retail price.

I thought the DS and PSP were selling the best right now in Japan.
