Sony PS3 - Image 1Heads up, Sony PlayStation 3 owners! The latest update for your console's firmware is now available for download from the PlayStation Network. We still don't have a hold of any changelogs, but some claim that firmware 2.17 fixes several exploits and other bug fixes in certain titles such as MotorStorm.

You should be able to find the update when you log into PSN, as many others have reported that they have downloaded PS3 firmware 2.17. As noted by the early adopters, there's no in-game XMB or anything that significant. We're still looking into what has changed, and you'll be the first to know about what we find out, so watch this space!

Thanks to Gip, DatNizzle, and someone for the tip!

UPDATE:

We've checked around various sites and discovered that there appear to be two main changes included in PS3 firmware 2.17. The first, as noted by commenters below, is that the update improves the operating stability on some online PS3 titles.

The second, which we found on the the Japanese PS3 website, appears to be related to the PS2, as the Google translation reads: "That can be installed to hard disk PlayStation 2 has been added to the standard software." If you happen to have a firm knowledge of Japanese, and want to translate for your fellow readers, feel free to visit the source link we've added below so you can take a look at the original Japanese text.

can anyone please post the changelog?

i'm quite curious, can't wait to fire up my black brute and get this firmware (although i still don't have any reasons to get excited about since i don't even know what it does).

 » Official changelogs, anyone?

We're kinda in the dark here actually, Quixand. We can't seem to pinpoint any difference at all with 2.10 and 2.17. Okay, so the number has changed, but other than that...nada.

But then maybe those with every PS3 game in existence could figure out if any game improved somehow.

Plus, they could see if in-game XMB was even partially instated in any game. We don't have our fingers crossed, but it wouldn't hurt to hope. Or would it?

Or maybe this is a prep for that BD Live gig?

a prep for some upcoming big feature in a future firmware...

or maybe all this news of peaple hacking the ps3 left and right has got them moving... taking a further step forward.

or maybe my PS3 now plays HDDVD to take advantage of the $9.00 movies..

maybe they are blocking out Phil Harrison's probably all encompassing access codes!! haha!!!

who knows man... nobody knows anything.

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2008-03-13
 » ...

If I interpret that right, it means the PSN will soon have PS2 titles to download. And I'm pretty sure they will somehow work on 40Gb PS3s...
And before you bash me saying" NO the 40GB can't play PS2 games!" wait, Sony even said that there are possibilities to run PS2 games over PSN on the 40gig console. Also, I would be pretty stupid from to add PS2 games if they want to phase out all 60 or 80 GB PS3...

   Re: Quixand - 2008-03-13
 » if that's true silver

i hope they can do this even to big ang long PS2 games like Final Fantasy X for instance...

i regret giving away my PS2 games to my brother so it can be included in his trade-in deal when he bought his PS3 while me on the other hand paid full price for my launch PS3.

i miss zanarkand.

   Re: super7 - 2008-03-13
 » The second part of the Japanese change log reads;

"A list of PS2 software that can be installed to the PS3 HDD has been added."

PS2 titles won't be available thru DL, but you'll be able to install some PS2 titles on your PS3. The list carries but only two lines of games. One is an online game about medieval Japan's warlords (Nobunaga no yabo; Nobunaga's ambitions), and the other is Final Fantasy IX online.

   Re: ~~ - 2008-03-13
 » ~~

They just included the special PS2 HDD partitioner which was downloadable from the US store to the firmware as a standard.

So that you can play PS2 games which require a HDD install to play, such as most MMO's for the PS2.

Sounds logical enough doesn't it ?

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=ja_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.jp.playstation.com%2fps3%2fupdate%2f

On the first page i read:
The PlayStation 2 standard software whose installation to®the hard disk is possible was added.

and Clicked the Details link, and read this:
Included in this 2.17 release, for the 60GB and 20GB models (that can play PS2 Games) there is now the ability to install "BACKUP" the games to the harddrive and playback from there. The site gives instructions on how to do so, and what games currently can do it. So i'm assuming there is some sort of ISO Loader included just for PS2 games. This will NOT work on the 40GB model (so it says).

Some games listed: FINAL FANTASY XI (10GB space needed), Nobunaga's ambition Online (7GB space needed) - requiring a huge amount of diskspace.

   Re: Vipre77 - 2008-03-13
» As someone else already said...

This is only for titles that supported or required an install to the PS2 HDD (FF11 was one such title. Apparently Nobunaga's Ambition was another. I think there was a Syphon Filter game and a Resident Evil game, too, where installation was optional?) There was previously a separate download for this functionality. It seems it has now been integrated into the firmware release, that's all.
   by bulbous_shot - 2008-03-13
 » Hmm...

Perhaps Condemned 2 was delayed a week to work on Home integration and this is a pre-Home installation. Or, this could have something to do with the patch for The Orange Box they've been promising. Either way, the Flash player works in the web browser now. YouTube had worked previously, but the video portion of the community page under the game screen for PAIN hadn't worked until this update. I also heard you can download wma files from the PS3 browser, save them, and play them now.

 » Translated changelog

Ok, um, basically the whole changelog just says:

- Stability for some PLAYSTATION 3 titles has been improved
- Added support for PlayStation 2 software that requires hard disc drive installation

If you click the link below, you get to the "Information center".
You get information about the backwards compatibility on the PS3 models. When you scroll down, you see a table.
KOEI's (latest?) add-on to their MMORPG "nobunaga no yabou online" has been added as a supported title with 2.17.
That means, you can now install that one to the PS3's HDD.

With regards the installation of PS2 games if I am reading it right the above games supported the PS2 HD and had optional installs, all its saying is that they have updated the titles compatible with this on the ps3

you cant back-up titles to the HD

» you are reading it right

its like that gay little hdd you had to buy to play ff11 online, thats now your ps3 hdd
what have we learned
-better compatibility for ps2 games that required a hard drive
-better stability for PS3* I Couldn't Notice In COD4* Online
-A Couple Of Bug Fixes

Can Anyone Tell Sony I Want A Change Log* Thats More Specific

※ new PS3 (40GB model / CECHH00) standard PS2 software will work you.

What the f**ck is this. It say's at the end of the line, WILL WORK YOU...?

Who will work me....nobody.
What does this mean.

THe translation is wrong it should be,

STANDARD ps2 software will work now.

SO does this mean that the 40gb version is now also backwards compatible like the 60gb.

It also say's, due to hardware differences some software will work with limitations.....?

ANd we now that there was that rumour that sony was thinking about putting back the BC feature in the 40 gb version.

SO run, run run to any shop and buy all ps2 games....

hahahhahahahaha

well i really don't know but lets hope for the best

   Re: gtxboyracer - 2008-03-13
 » Bollocks...

There is no BC for the 40GB.. i'm running the 2.17 firmware on the 40GB model, and it still says this model of PS3 doesn't support PS2 Software Titles.

As i mentioned in my post, it will NOT support the 40GB model. Maybe in future, but not anytime soon.

» ps3 new store comming up

in april there will be a new firmware.
Maybe sony is working on a new ps networkstore where
any ps3 system can buy and download ps1ps2 games in the future.
It's cheaper then selling the discs in stores.they cut down their production costs.so if you can download ps2 and ps1 games in the future, sony will have a new market!

combine a new store with ps2 games and the new firmware comming up......
it could be possible!

it's actually clever.
