PlayStation3 homebrew seems to be picking up some tempo. A Japanese coder recently released a NES emulator for the console using BD-J. Aside from being an emulator, the program also acts as a filer that displays certain kinds of images (PNG, GIF, JPG).

Check out our forums for more information on the program courtesy of Cooguy1212. The forum thread is linked below. Anyhow, here's a video of the homebrew in action, playing the classic of classics in video gaming, Super Mario Bros.

UPDATE:

Here are instructions for how to install the homebrew, with instructions, thanks to Cooguy1212. Download link below.
  1. Extract the the AVCHD folder in the compressed file to the main root of a USB device or memory stick
  2. Place the roms you would like to play into the AVCHD you have just extracted to the root
  3. Go to the Video section in the XMB on your PS3
  4. You will need to click the USB or memory stick you have chosen
  5. Select the BD-J homebrew game
  6. Next, you will be brought to a file viewer in which, you may choose roms.
  7. Now the game will start. Press the triangle button then go to the numeric pad
  8. The 1 on the pad stands for select and the 2 acts as start
  9. You may now press triangle and enjoy the game

Great stuff, seems we are picking up momentum, but is anything more possible outside of Java? I dream of the day.

As a learning Java Programmer, I can tell you that everything is possible with Java! Even 3d Games.

Ok i know that u can run ".exe" files with java...so is it possible to make an AVCHD file do the same?....if so why not just make it run ZSNES...or FireFox...something?....but i dnt realy know very much about java...i just wanted to know that if its possible why hasn't anybody done that?

well i guess the programs have to be re-written or so to run according to what its running on. plus controls would have to be mapped anyway...

Its Great but do u think we'll eventually get a better version with sound and everything else working? and possibly be able to save it on to the ps3 itself?

Works great! Can't wait until it has sound, it's going to be awesome.

» Sony's definately learned a thing or 2 since the PSP.

With the OtherOS feature and BD-J(unknowingly of course), Sony has successfully developed a homebrew-compatible console without being in jeopardy of pirating. (BD-ROM based games anyway)

Then again, there's always the problem of PSN downloadable games being cracked.

Wow,this is cool. And its just the start, too bad no sound, but im sure it will happen soon. Also note that the dpad only works in 4 way direction and not 8 way. So if your playing something like contra you cant aim diagonaly up or down, only left right up and down.Hope they fix that too.

 » sweet!

this is awesome!!! the only problem i had had nothing to do with the actual emulator, i was searching for ROMs and it took a very long time because i guess quite recently ESA has cracked down on most of the ROM sites! so good luck finding ROMs, it's not easy.

my experience has been that you should search for an actual game and not ROM sites.....

Ever hear of torrents....like the one on pirate bay with all the nes roms in one archive...178 MBs with like 100 something seeds....i guess that must have slipped your mind....this prog cannot load 800+ files, I had to copy only a good few, after so many the program fails to load (cannot view the file list)

Actually, this may very well be the limit of what can be done. Look at how it's implemented: the "popup menu" button, Square, and the confirm button, X, are the only buttons that can be translated into input. Unless keyboards get support in BD-J, more buttons are going to be assigned to 3-0 on the keypad. This environment is designed for interactive elements of movies, not software or games.

As for sound, I'm a bit curious as to how it will be implemented. My guess is a cache file generated by the java code, then streamed as the sound for the current "scene." Somebody should just do a PS3 Linux distro for the homebrew community, developing this sort of software on that instead.

   Re: Cydonos - 2008-08-22
 » re: ...

Yeah unfortunately the limitations suck alot, and it's unlikely that will change. But developing for linux on the ps3 just isn't as exciting.

It's like installing linux on a mac and claiming you're developing for the mac. No you're not. You're developing for linux.

Anyway i'm pretty sure there's already emulators for linux.

Over $1000 in nextgen games, over $700 is a PS3 and accessories, over $2000 in HDTV and home theather... play your favorite NES games (even without sound) in a BDJ emulator is price less... There are somethings money can’t buy, For everything else there's Mastercard.

this bd-j nes emulator is just like the xbox 360 media center exploit nes emulator which uses java also.. and it both doesnt have no sound

» F*ck sound what about playing

I downloaded this and got it all up and running started mario but have no control over game and can't even start it, this happens for all my new games, what a crock.
I agree with aldostoolscom, you sepnd a small fortune on getting a PS3 then want to play crappy old nes games, wtf is wrong with us.

   Re: DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-08-25
 » ....

1. did you even read how to use it?
2. no one forces you to use.
3.why even bother to put the nes emulator on your ps3 if you think there crappy?
   by Henkibojj - 2008-08-30
» I can has Printscreen Program?

While emulators are indeed really nice applications, what I long for is a decent screenshot application, without decompression and with nice navigational tools with it.

Any Java coder out there who is up to the challenge?
