PlayStation Eye - Image 1

Here's something for those who want to get more mileage out of the PlayStation Eye camera. Someone's been able to create and optimize the drivers needed to control the camera via PC after some exhaustive investigation into the peripheral's innards.

Apparently, this project - turning the Eye into a PC webcam - has been going on for a while. the software is still being tested, but tipster PolishPride212 tipped us off to the latest update, which now has the Eye capturing at a good 60 frames per second.

To use the Eye as a webcam, you'll need the driver set and the PS3EyeTest program found at the Source link. The Eye itself currently streams video in YUYV format, with each frame at 640x480x2 bytes. If you're planning to capture using 60fps, make sure there's no other peripheral connected to the USB host controller as the capture quality could be affected.

Glad someone is trying help me get more bang out of my buck. Why couldn't Sony make a install for PC to use this?
Sure it's supposed to be PS3 exclusive, but what if I really wanted to live chat off my laptop(I would have to purchase another web cam, lame)

This is old news. I've been using this software for months now. How did it take this long to get a story.

old news or not, I never heard of it and would love to try it. The PSEye is such a great camera and works with like no light.

I wonder if this would work on my IBM, unlike the old EyeToy.

In any case, I'm surprised it's taken this long (or however long it took) to get it to work for PC.

How exactly can I record video with the PSeye? This just gives you a program to test the camera, not actually record.

Hum... I suppose no mic support? It would be awesome to have an array mic on my PC. Those things are expensive! I'm surprised the camera costs as much as it does based on it's quality. That alone answers the above question as to why Sony don't make PC support. Unless the hardware drives software sales, there's no money in it for them.

I'm not the only one who's sick of your "WTF!?!?!?!?!" on every post, and whining thereafter. put down the doritos, get out of your parents basement, and go do something useful for the world.

It's just like all the idiots that declare they were the first post. Except his wtf?!?!?!?! isn't idiotic. It's just isohaven's way of trademarking his name in a way. Most of the time his posts do entail a WTF? kind of thinking to them though lol

Thanks you guys! :)

@Jasper1605 - BINGO! I like to inspire people to think for themselves. Throw in a WTF shocker and get the gears cranking away.

A good rule to live by...ALWAYS challenge/question the media.

Your pretty much an idiot because of the fact that the Mics in the PS Eye have been working since its release.

Windows recognizes all the microphones and records in stereo sound instead of the usual Mono that other mics have.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Who are you talking to? I've plugged my PS3 camera into my PC and neither XP or Vista recognize the mic. Plus, it takes special software (other then a standard mic driver) to properly use a mic array for proper noise cancelation.
