Guess what? Looks like the Open Beta of Sony's long-awaited PlayStation Home is arriving in late 2008. The official announcement just came in over press wire, where Sony Computer Entertainment claimed that the ongoing Closed Beta test was to be "expanded" by an undisclosed number of users. They say that upon the completion of this expanded Closed Beta, the Open Beta will start. The online testing experience begins fall of 2008. Why so long? According to Sony's top brass, Kazuo Hirai, the extension to the later half of 2008 was required to ensure that the Home experience is completely refined to the standards of the company. The expansion of the user base in the Closed Beta, as well as the extension of its program to late summer, shows just how much work Sony's putting into the polishing process. While not other details were immediately divulged, Sony says that the expansion registration, as well as testing mechanics and features, will be announced in the near future. More updates on this as we get them. |

Fall of 2008?! That is IT. I officially do NOT care anymore. We were supposed to be using this program already.
I mean F*CK! Polishing is polishing, but now they're just being ridiculous. Let's just boycott the whole thing and tell Sony to eat our collective asses.
This is just balls.
This basically means that Home will be available some time in a year or so from now.
Idiots.

at this point, sony can keep that *****. as long as i get in-game xmb soon, i'll be fine. it would be nice to get SOMETHING they promised us. we (at least i) did spend upwards of $600 to buy their freaking product.

***** Home. I just don't care anymore. We were supposed to be using this by now, but no, no, Sony just thinks it's cool to delay existence for 50 years to make sure it's at their standards. And watch, when it comes out, it'll probably suck balls. These testers are probably just greedy douchebags who keep asking them to delay it on purpose.
How about this idea: RELEASE it, then simply PATCH THE DAMN THING. Guess that's too hard.

so sony gives us two dates for home already and does not deliver on them. I guess the ps3 actually IS hard to program for. Why don't they just give our "in-game XMB" to calm everyone down.

It's pretty obvious that all of you guys do care. Why would you be coming in here commenting all pissed off and angry if you didn't care?!?! That doesn't make sense you bunch of hypocrites. It is getting ridiculous with these delays though.

not because I comment in the MK vs DC news means I care about that games or in the jack lawsuits news...
Anyway the thing is to me that I'm not waiting anymore and isn't not gay like the other guy said either. It will be the social of the PS. For me is a step forward because no console have this at least just yet. It's a brilliant idea but it's taking to long to be all set. For me I don't want a bad PR so release it when it's ready. People said "just release an update" or give us now but look the store with their image or the beta of MGO... both are free and people whining

You people are ridiculous, complaining one minute about not getting and about just realeasing it and to patch it, but if they did that then you'd probably be complaining about all the bugs and how it sucks and how they should patch more. Would u want a game released with one level and jsut have them "patch" it in so u can jsut the game right away? i dont think so. Stop being dumb, Think about it this way, its something comingout in yourlifetime so you'll get it eventualy :)

» Not that good.
Its nothing to get excited over, really. I am a PS3 fanboy hardcore, a GAP member, and a Home Beta tester, and I think its fairly useless. Unless you are the kind of person that plays Second Life, or sits around in those 3d chat rooms, you wont find home very useful at all.
Its interesting, and definitely something no one else has tried, but you are all setting yourselfs up for a big disappointment if you think it will bring anything that we dont already have.

» What?
The whole reason why its useless for you is because you basically are alone in there.
It does bring lots of things that the ps3 doesn't have right now. I've tried home first hand way back even before they had the square. Even back then it brought a lot to the table. I think your just bored of it.
Playing pool with your friends while chating, watching movies (eventually), streaming music and video when they actually add it, and Home game launching seems like a lot right there.. Your a dumbass if you think thats not a lot of features.

I don't care. How can you tell me what I like? I wanted Home. A lot of us did. And every turn, they just delay the hell out of it for no reason. It's the same excuse every time. It's not like it's going to be revolutionary anyway. Oh wow, you can create an avatar and roam around and live a fake life. Awesome. I really wanted it, but it's no longer on my anticipation list.

» So the beta trial page will be usefull now?
If we can use the beta trial page to enter the beta, it's perfect for me, as long as they let a lot of us enter the closed beta, it's cool for me (as long as I can enter it, lol).
ps: To all asses up who said it's gay or whatever, it's just trophies and a meeting place in 3D, stop getting all hyped for new kind of forums and start having a life instead of spamming stupidities online... And another ps: for the imbeciles who said they bought a ps3 for that and that the 600$ machine is lame or whatever, why are you in the ps3 topics? Return to the x360 topics, the ps3 cost 399$ wich is under the 449$ of the x360 elite (wich is the same as the low end ps3), and if you bought a ps3 for home, you are really retarted and it's a bless you can actually form complete sentences on a keyboard, by happy with that and stop making the net more lame.
ppps: Sorry if I was insulting, but man, sometimes people should read what they wrote before posting.

I bought my PS3 for $900 (Just the PS3, no bundle). I still think most games out for it are not even worth playing, and home is useless, but I dont regret my purchase, or the price because Sony has a track record of dominance in this field.
I just dont see home as useful at all. The only reason I ever load it up is as a tester. Once its open I will never use it, and no one else that I know (Personally) that has Beta access, will use it either.
I think the extended Beta is to "ease" people into it (like gMail did) because if they just opened it, the influx of traffic will be too much to handle.

» Influx of traffic..
Thats a new one lol. I don't think their stupid. They realize that every PS3 owner that has online will use home at least at one time.
Home has its uses weather you like to think so or not. It adds more features than the ps3 has right now. I'm pretty sure by full release they'll have the streaming (video and music) down, Home game launching, and maybe even add the PSstore into the mall type place.
And obviously its not worth playing.. Its not a game so of course its not going to be as fun as warhawk or somthing.
Home adds a more social place to meet friends and hang out with the ones you have already.
If you don't have friends then Home is really useless as of right now in the beta (and since theres only like 6 people on a day or less I don't think you have many friends on there).

The playstation store, when it got its update, had so much traffic that the tiny little thumbnail pictures took ages to download, and other companies (Like the recent MGS4 Beta ID fiasco) shows what happens when you open the floodgates.
gMail decided to do this by an extremely long "closed beta" period where each new person had to be explicitly invited by another member.
Sony is just doing the same thing.
As for home having features that the PS3 doesnt already have, thats untrue.
We can chat, text, visually and vocally to our friends.
We can download and even stream trailers.
We can "invite" our friends to join a game by a simple txt invite.
We can... you see where I am going? All they are doing is taking what we already can do, and putting it in a 3d environment. It does not, and will not, offer features that the PS3 doesnt already have except for the extra social aspect for those that have nothing better to do then hanging around in a virtual world.
As for there only being 6 or so ppl on at any one time, you know why? Because they played around with it, and got bored. Its nothing special, takes ages to load, and even longer to download updates or content areas. (Imagine how long those downloads would be if Sony opened the floodgates btw)
I am not 'anti-home' I think it will have its uses occasionally (like if they do GDC or TGC or E3 type presentations virtually), but for the most part its pretty useless. Who wants to take 3+ mins to load an app, to goto the PS Store, when they can instantly view that store using the existing tools? Or 3+ mins to load an app (and THEN load the game), so they can join a game with their buddy, when they can skip the app entirely and just go into the game.

you can steam movies and stuff. I mean you can stream music and movies over the internet to other friends, as of right now as far as I know you can't do that. Another thing is Home is basically a party system. Right now you can invite friends but not group up with them and join a game together.
When your chatting with a friend instead of just sitting in a chat room doing nothing you could be playing pool or chess. Another thing, when I tried Home it never took 3+ min. to load up anything, so your over exaggerating much.
Just like I said before though, I don't think their stupid enough to open up to the public with home and not have enough servers. They saw what happen with the slow loading for the PSstore. If its releasing all the way in fall I'm pretty sure they can fix and not even have a problem.
And I already know it got boring for the people on the beta. I'd probably already be bored of it too after all this time. But I do know it has features now and will have a lot more when it actually releases to the public.

Someone anyone please tell me how to get in on the beta so i can at least play this thing i am sorry but i waited very long and i cant wait till fall they should have pushed it out so i can have somthin to do. besides destroying metal gear in june, sony pushed everything i want to back till fall like killzone and little big planet and even resistance comes out fall. i know they will dominate with the fall line up so why do they need to put home in with that its not needed they already will have dominated the other consoles this fall anyway they need to release it now and give us updates for it over time.

The current Beta testers are all G.A.P. (Gamer Advisory Panel) members. If you want to get into this next round, you have a much higher chance if you sign up at the official playstation site, and enter all your information (games and systems owned, play habits, etc..). Thats how us GAP members became members and Home testers.

1. NO ONE was suppose to GET anything at any specific time. NO ONE was promised ANYTHING. Time frames were given as a courtesy, nothing more AND came with the FACT that they could be changed at any time.
2. So it was pushed back from spring to fall....BIG DEAL! Do you even know WHAT was pushed back? THE OPEN BETA. It's not even the full release.

"realistic target date" and "bad management"
-> You start sacking PMs for lack of realistic target dates and you target most of what's wrong with any kind of Project. Sales/Marketing promising impossible things within impossible timelines, PMs agreeing to this, then cracking the whip on the Engineers expecting that this will help meet deadlines.
On the flip side, be glad this is not MS - they would rather release an unreliable product and make the consumer pick up the slack than take the time to polish or properly test a product.
I work in the IT industry and can guarantee that a timely product does not necessarily equate to a good product. Of course, this does not mean the reverse is true either, and does not mean Home will be bug-free, but the chances are far greater in favour of that.
My two cents.

I work in the IT industry too and my boss certainly does crack the whip with me when things are behind schedule!
I just think if the PM's are managing it properly, then they need to put the sales/marketing people in their places :)

just take it as a different way to talk with friends,
it will unify all game rooms so you dont have to exit a game, tell ur friends to join there game, go back into the game set it up, and hope ur friend read the message to join, i am speaking from cod4.
other game such as mortal kombat 2, have a invite system that is all right.
but with one place to launch games, we dont have to worry if the game supports invites, or if there was something you needed to say before u luanched a game, because in my opinion, home will be uses quite a bit, speicaly being free and all.
i for one will like home apon final release, mainly because of friends i can spend time with, we can go watch a movie at my house while sharing comments on it, listion to some music while chating, and just hang out going around home and play a few mini games till we feel like we should go play warhawk or something...and dont tell me u can share those things in chat, chat is laggy and bad sound quality for music and video, plain and simple.

» No, really..
"it will unify all game rooms so you dont have to exit a game, tell ur friends to join there game, go back into the game set it up, and hope ur friend read the message to join, i am speaking from cod4."
Actually this is what you have to do in Home.
You want to play another game, you have to exit the game, re load home (and thats about a 3 min load), then invite your friends into another game, and launch it. Not much different then you do now, only you will do it from a shinny 3d virtual environment.

» Well
when it actually releases it'll stay in home even when you exit a game (obviously if you launched it from home in the first place). Your going based on right now but when it releases their supposed to simplify most of the stuff you need to do. They have till fall so thats a pretty long time.
And I'm guessing full release will be around christmas.

» No it wont.
You will not "stay in home" when you launch a game.
Home requires the resources of a typical game (because thats essentially what it is). There is no way that Home can run at the same time as a game, it has to be unloaded from RAM so the game can make use of it.
The best they can do is simply have it keep a small kernel of itself in memory (more of a post it note), just enough so that it knows to automatically re-launch home (and put you back where you were) when you exit the game.
So you will still get that painfully slow loading time as it loads itself back into memory, and then reconnects you to the world, and then "Relocates" you back in Home.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
Home may not be actively running but who's to say it's doesn't "sleep"? Maybe it creates a type of save state when you launch a game.
The end result is 100% the same.

You just took what I said and disected it jester.
Just like ISO said the end result will be exactly the same, you'll end up in home when you quit your game.
Notice I said "it'll stay in home even when you exit a game," I didn't say when you launch one.

» Why?
Why are you all *****ing like you're losing something? I mean, this was supposed to be free so it's not like you're losing any money out of it. If anything, it's SONY that's losing money and resources. I've been waiting for this since last fall, so that means HOME will be delayed for an entire year. Yes, it better be good. No, you didn't lose anything out of it...Well maybe some patience and loyalty for SONY haha :)

I gave up on Home after March. I think the theory of Home doesn't exist is becoming more and more true.

» What?
This doesnt even make sense. Not only from a language standpoint, but even when I translate that to English it still doesnt make sense.
Home is not a "theory". There is no doubt of its existence. Thousands of GAP members can testify to this if you dont believe the vids or screenshots. Just because you do not have access to Home, doesnt make it any less real.
Sony has never, ever, given a launch date. Its something they are developing on the sly, and will be done at some future point.
And if they decide to never release it? More power to them. Last I looked on the PS3 box, it didnt list Home as item included in your purchase.

» the problem is
that sony has hyped up home for over a year now, but has then pushed the date back twice. I understand home is to be free, but sometimes people just want a sample of what it is like, after hearing about how cool it will be. Think about it like all of those people who purchased GT5P, because they wanted to sample it now instead of wait another year to play it.
