Ps3 Firmware update

Yes, you are reading the title correctly! Sony have just released version 1.10 of the PS3's firmware for any Japanese gamers who already have a PS3 through the use of the official Japanese PS3 site. As Japanese gamers queue up to receive their brand new PS3 consoles the big guys back at Sony have been refining the install method of the PS3's firmware update. With PS3 firmware v1.10 being released, gamers are half way between being able to interface their PSP's with a PS3 console. According to Sony's PS3 Japan site, this firmware update will provide "various functional additions and strengthening of security." Judging from the first bullet point in the overall system changes section, it looks like the Playstation Network couldn't be accessed in v1.00...my bad. Here's an translation from Sony's site detailing what version 1.10 features:

Whole (overall system changes)
  • It reached the point where the service of PLAYSTATION Network can be utilized.
  • With the picture keyboard of European language, it reached the point where it can do the letter input of single tap system.
Setting
  • Music CD output frequency was added to music setting.
  • ATRAC is made effective, added to substance setting.
  • In type of keyboard of peripheral device setting, type of keyboard which can be selected increased.
  • The “cross color decrease filter” was added to display setting.
  • 5 minutes later option added to screen saver options in display settings.
Video
  • When playing back the animated picture file which is retained in the hard disk and the record media with picture mode, it reached the point where full can be chosen.
Network
  • Downloading music and the animated picture file with Internet browser, it reached the point where it can retain in the hard disk.
  • PLAYSTATION Store - The following contents can be downloaded.
    • PLAYSTATION 3 standard software
    • PSP with the PlayStation standard software which operates (PSP system software version 3.00 or more is necessary)
  • It corresponded to traditional form letter Chinese and simplified form letter Chinese indication with Internet browser
  • The online manual was added.
Other
  • In addition Calculation method of hard disk capacity was modified.
    • As for empty capacity of the hard disk, the numerical value which calculated 1GB as the 1024?024?024= approximately 1,073,740,000 byte is indicated. Because of that, capacity than the numerical value which is stated as specification is smaller indicated in the instruction manual and the like. Setting the ⇒ [substance setting] the ⇒ you can verify the empty capacity of the hard disk, with system information.
  • PlayStation of the part in PS3 and operational status of the PlayStation®2 standard software were renewed. You can now verify up-to-date operational status with the private search sight.
In order to do the update (as you may have guessed) you will need a PS3 and an internet connection, and can find the update using the (system update) symbol in the PS3's XMB. The PS3 will then download the update which according to the download page requires at 110MB free. You can also download the update onto your PC via Sony or from our QuickJump download site and then transferring the update which is named "PS3UPDAT.PUP" to a USB storage device and then to your PS3. We will not host the download due to legality issues which could ensue if we did so. If you are in Japan, own a PS3 and would like to get the update then make sure you visit the official Sony PS3 firmware update page before doing so, and make sure you copy the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file to x://PS3/UPDATE folder on your console.

There's currently a heavy discussion on this going on in our forums, with many famous names from the PSP homebrew scene working on taking a peek inside the PS3 firmware update. If you want to get involved move right on over to our PS3 forums and sound off!

UPDATE:
Looks like Sony have just released the PS3 firmware update v1.10 for US users a week before the US launch of the PS3. Get it from the link below!

UPDATE 2:
News is coming in very quickly on more PS3 developments and one great find that we have here at QJ is the launch of an Open Platform for PS3 website. Currently the site doesn't say much except "PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon.". We aren't sure how long the site has been up, but we do know that it confirms what Phil Harrison said about the PS3 being 'open platform' back in September.

Hopefully this means that we'll see a large homebrew scene developing with the PS3 allowing easy integration of 3rd party software. We already know that the PS3 allows you to install another operating system as we told you guys last month when we came a cross a large amount of PS3 XMB screenshots. The power of a cell processor and the graphical power of the PS3 give pretty much endless possibilities to a programmer.

I'm pretty sure they will have a hard time trying to copy a blu-ray game. Sony worked pretty hard to make those things copy-proof

This is a Playstaton 3 firmware update and is NOT for install on a PSP! It has been posted on in the off topic category because it includes PSP - PS3 connectivity updates, and is not for use on a PSP!

Just a thought, maybe this could be decrypted and used for the custom firmware for psp, not the whole thing just bits of it? im guessing the coding for either platform would be quite similar

   Re: not (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
» and you'd be guessing wrong

The processors are not the same in the 2 systems. Blatently speaking the 2 Firmwares are about as different as a 32 vs 64 bit version of a Windows OS. While visually similar, they are in fact very different on the core kernel level.

Hey if there are other systems that will have functionality with the PSP, I don't see anything wrong with it. It just gets me more excited about my PSP!!!

I wonder if they will follow suit and make the PSP 3.0 Firmware allow homebrew as well!!

Epic. Now all they have to do is allow the PSP to be open platform. I bet they could free up some of that internal flash memory by removing those anti-homebrew patches.

my friend's ps3 arrived to his house 4 days ago and US version, he bought it on ebay haha. Anyways his not a hacker or dev, ect. so he hasn't tried using homebrew (if there is). Anyways he still hasn't bought any game yet for the ps3.

If they dont want homebrew on PSP just because of ISO's, and the PS3 games will be HUGE blue ray disks, maybe they aren't worried about this...

Nice thinking nicko01, they probably know the amuont of space it takes to backup the game into and HDD (and also, the process of cracking that new security scheme) they probably know that any attemps at piracy, if any, would be minimal. Good thinking for once Sony!

Re: PSP RIC (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » YEAH...

YEAH.. WELL YOU'll SEE..

Everything is possible in this world.. a game is about 6 or 7GB.. the 20 or 60 HDD can handle a couple and someone might find somethink..

   Re: Nicko01 (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » Thanks

They also might add dummy files to increase the size so it fills up a blueray disk, which is BIG (50GB)
and also, this website:
http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act+view+id+34764
says that "Resistance: Fall of Man" will use 22 GB of the 50 GB disk. So what If they use large dummy files?? The disk will take a LONG time to rip, upload, download, and transfer. Even if it IS possible to run them, which it might be encrypted and then if the dummy files are removed, it won't run.

   Re: Nicko01 (Unregistered) - 2006-11-10
 » Internet speed

This might take WEEKS to download a game, expecially if you dont have high speed internet (lol)..
I don't support piracy anyway....

» Gears of War - From an Xbox fanboy

Recently, there have been a lot of talks on ‘Craps of War’. MS said that when Sony releases the PS3 (it means Apr. 2006 - before the PS3’s delay), they’ll walk right into ‘Crapalo 3’. What a rubbish lie that was. Halo 3 will not be ready to be released until Nov. 2007 (the most accurate unofficial confirmation). How dare MS lied that Halo 3 will be released 19 (nineteen) months before the actual release date? Crapalo 3 was the reason all those idiots bought the Crapbox 360 including me because Halo 3 is the only game which is worth $70 among all X360 games.

Now, MS’s saying “play Craps of War instead” when this GoW is as good as Perfect Dark Crap? We don’t want another crap from you MS which sets low standard for the developers; therefore, developers can release craps with low budge and short production time. The followings are some examples: Crap Rising, Ghost Recon: Advanced Crap, Craps Row, Lost Crap (lost cause?), Phantasy Crap Universe, Crap Witch, Crapman Returns, Splinter Cell: Double Craps, Dead or Crap 4, Project Crap Racing 3, et cetera. MS must learn this fact. One A graded game is far better than ten class B or C games all added together, moreover one class A game needs less budget, time and brain power to make than 10 class B games do.

Crapbox Live Service is a total joke and nonsense; everyone but idiots knows such common knowledge. Such online service is totally free in PC gaming industry (except RPGs of course). MS started this whole ret@rded nonsense years ago because they have no moral. Sony’s PlayStation Network Service (PNS) is free exactly like the one in the PC industry. Sony also recently officially said in a document that they will never do such nonsense & crazy thing to their consumers like MS has done with their XBL.

Now it’s a fact that Microsoft is a totally rubbish company. They have always run MS in such ways. Now what MS is doing? MS is releasing tidbits of info on Crapalo 3 throughout this Nov and Dec on 20 different days. No one has time to check out all those tidbits on Halo 3 scattered all over the net. Most people except 3rd raters are not even interested in them anyway. MS releases such teasers, tidbits and such garbage since three (3) years before the release date of the game. Just release Halo 3 and MS needs to learn how to shut the f@ck up until they actually release it.

* 5 reasons why Craps of War’s gonna be the Halo killer. (pros)
- Xbox fanboys are just happy if they see MS brand name on their games (so many people buy computer mouse from MS just because there’s MS logo on it)
- I heard a rumor that half of all X360 owners are those people who think their TV speakers can talk to them (these idiots think they are soldiers when they play first person killer games like GoW)

* 5 reasons why Craps of War is not gonna be the Halo killer. (cons)
- Very bad frame rate when the actions are intense (it’s not even a game; it’s playing slide show, stutter-fest)
- GoW is all about camping (mainly because of the 2nd person view)
- Skilled players camp and shoot & hide again and again; noobies will come to them then those noobies will be killed by the skilled campers by shotgun or chainsaw.
- Button A is context-sensitive and very easy to use; but the matter is that when an enemy just appeared around you and you want to run away, you will be locked on a nearby wall instead of tumbling away; then he will have a very easy kill.
- 8 players for multiplayer (any first person killer game which can’t support at least 24 players is like not having any multiplayer mode at all, my Call of Crap 2 X360 version is collecting dust)

The PS3 is linux enabled, so, install linux, download SNES9X, PJ64, the new Dreamcast emulator, whatever, and there u have it, homebrew.

25 gb would be all they need but you know sony... they like to waste money on crap that you dont need like a locationfree player and dvr in a ps3. they just do that to sell more of their products.
