Well that depends, really. If we're talking about the idea as the "big idea" per se, then brace yourselves, because it was in the minds of the game pioneers at Nintendo long before the electronics giant thought of making a second Second Life without the persistent game world.

Playstation Home - Image 1In fact, it was conjured up by legend Shigeru Miyamoto two decades ago, but it was never realized as a full game. Last week at the Game Developers Conference, a Nintendo spokesperson claimed that the PlayStation Home "is an example of Sony's Mii-too approach."

A report from Jolt quoted Miyamoto stating, "We've been working on this idea of twenty years and never been able to turn it into much of anything. The view was it would be very popular with creative artists. But the view [also revealed that] it was too complicated and would make most players frustrated."

The Redmond folks were also speculating that some features from Microsoft's Xbox Live were "definitely taken," although they applied little pressure against Sony and gave them a pat on the back instead. "I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here," said the Microsoft spokesman.

They believe that the PlayStation Home is gearing towards becoming a whole different "little game" in the long run, and they'd rather center a community around the games for their console than create a community with a game. "Our approach is the other way around; it's that games are the center and that's the star of the show... that's what people buy the console for," he concluded.

But if we're talking about the actual game itself, then Sony gets to bring home the apple pie.

Sony comes up with a good idea and somehow nintendo invented it? Yeah right, I didn't see a patent for "nintendo home" 2 decades ago. Just stfu and make your own online service better.

 » your totally right!

sony just kill nintendo and microsoft for the online service. Now it's easy to say '' I taught about it when I was playing smurf on my Atari '' After GDC most developers are really impress with home and the new toolkits. Hmmm the wind is changing now.

"sony just kill nintendo and microsoft for the online service."

Have you used it? No, so quit the Sony flag waving.

Sony have taken a different direction, whether it's better than the competition remains to be seen, but at least it will be interesting to see how it all developes.

» Man this site is really starting to suck

when home was released Nintendo came ut and said that Sony and Nintendo work on the "Home" idea but felt they could not implement it! Sony keeps the rights to Home and now Nintendo is belly aching that they came up with the concept. You guys posted article last week!!

 » Makes sense to me

I buy into this stuff because for me it explains why the PS2's online showing was so poor, obviously sony wanted this to happen for the PS2 and by the time they realised they couldn't make it happen their focus shifted to the PS3...

just a thought...

LOL, you fanboys think that home is an original idea? hahahahahaha that is too funny. Second Life, look it up.

Your way off man. First, Second Life is a vast virtual world where people live virtual lives. Second, pretty much every thing in the world is user created and costs money. Home is very different because first off its for a video game console, and second, its entirely controlled by Sony. Its basically a three dimensional Xbox Live and its free. If you choose to upgrade the stuff your given you can, but if you don't have to buy anything at all to use Home and all its cool features.

It's a piece of software not a navigation system. You can't go back and forth between home and a game without exiting one or the other. A PC is classed as gaming entertainment device. Every time something new is created of PC and then moved to a console does that make it an original idea? Get real! It's micro-transaction and ad so it's a profit making piece of software. Sure you don't have to buy anything but who's gona talk to a plan avatar lamer, lol? Your space is going look silly too. Sony have to make money on it so you are going to be encouraged to spend. I not saying that's bad, it's just that the costs aren't upfront and all the cool stuff people are going to want is gonna cost money. To get the most out of the software you are going to have to spend money, if you don't it's more like a demo, right?

You say it's a three dimensional Xbox Live, but Live persists in game and in dash. Home persists in home. In the PS3 you wouldn't be able to see who online, text/voice message or voice chat with online friends that are not in same game lobby or online match as you, or invite friends directly into the game your currently playing (you have to organize that while you in home), view what game your friends is playing, view his recently played games, see his achievements, see when they were online last, play custom soundtracks in all your games. You can do all that through the 360 guide menu no matter where you are.

That's someting sony needs to work on, they are got something creative but it's not a true online dash it only half of it. Home is a closed space, and if your not in home your space doesn't even exist, you don't even exist. Yes blast me for it but Home is only half the picture of what Sony need to do with online functionality on the PS3.

 » do u even owe a ps3?

topic. coz it sure seems u know alot bout it, or r u just making baseless accusations. I dont see why is there even a need for fanboys. get a life u losers!

why do u even bother to throw in ur debates here, what u say here is not going to sway even 0.000001% of the people who have a ps3 to ur cause so just give it up

microsoft and sony and nintendo are living off ur money and they r having a big laugh, i wont be surprised if bill gates goes golf with sony's CEO and they have a good laugh, and somewhere along the line, for a nanosecond, they think bout idiots like u and then their lives goes on...
