User TicHack from PS3-Hacks Forums just discovered a possible TIFF exploit for the PlayStation 3 running on U.S. Firmware 1.93. According to the user, he copied some of the TIFF images in the console's HDD after they appeared on the memory card.

As you all know, the PS3 doesn't deal with these things so TicHack received the "Corrupted Data" method. What he did next was took the HDD off and viewed the TIFF image on the Photo Menu. After taking away the hard drive, the PlayStation 3 unit in question continued running on FW 1.93. TicHack checked some of the features on the XMB and they are working all fine.

We're not saying that this is already a full-blown exploit and TicHack said it best when he mentioned that this particular method could only serve as the gateway to the exploit. A video has also been posted as proof of concept.

  • Download and place TIFF file on a USB/flash drive.
  • View the TIFF on the PS3 and copy it to HDD, it should show up as CORRUPTED DATA.
  • Remove the PS3's HDD at this point and view the TIFF image again.
  • You should now be able to go to Game Data Utility - Save Data Utility and I can use the TRIANGLE (e.g Eject Disc,Copy etc) also plug in External Devices and so ON.

QJ.NET would like to thank Pirate for the heads up!

This is really impressive !!! The guy can load a disk and cannot read it !!! I'm sure I can manage that ;)

Seriously, I hope that homebrew won't kill the PS3 as they are killing the PSP...

» homebrew is not a killer

Its not homebrew that hurts a system, its piracy. homebrew actually drove the psp's sales up in all reality; unfortunately with the psp, iso loaders and homebrew went hand and hand which drove software sales down. PS3 has more security in place for its games so the risk of piracy is slightly less. And don't forget how long it takes to download a 25-50 gig file from the internet as opposed to a .5 to 1 gig psp game.

yeah I doubt piracy will happen on the PS3 as the games are too big. Playstation store games may be pirated however.

Say goodbye to the ps3 if the system gets hacked. Any chance the ps3 had of leading will be lost of this allows people to play games off the harddrive.

 » no

actually even if you have a 160 gig hard drive your only gonna fit maybe four games on the hard drive after formatted space, system data, and game data. Also unlike the psp, the ps3 will offer many more services that will intrigue people into updating firmware.

What's the big deal about this TIFF exploit? It doesn't seem to do much so far. So you can play PS1 backups and run firmware with no hard drive present?

Anyway you're jumping to conclusions. The security on the PS3 is so tight I doubt you will ever see a practical ISO loader or decent homebrew emulators.

Mr. common sense, i doubt you know anything about security. Just quit your nay-saying and sit in your tower.

» You do know that PSP games are only 1.700 gigs of memory

or something like that AKA UMD's don't go up to 5 gigabytes full of space, and PSP games are 200 megabytes to 1gig, get you facts straight next time.

Plus if you havent noticed Sony doesnt really care much about the PSP to put up a good wall of security to protect it from hackers and the reason why the PS3 isnt hacked yet, is cause all of the good hackers are hacking other systems like PSP, Plus the hackers on PSP have already said that once there done with CFW, they will come and hack the PS3 and create Custom Firmware for it aswell.

There is no such thing as an unhackable system.

Sony is really lazy with PSP, they bring out horrible accessories, and such but with PS3, they bring out great accessories, they actually ditched the PSP for the PS3. PSP2 will probably have great tecnology and such but Sony will be lazy with that and put more effort into the PS4.

» do none of the video posters have friends?

all of the videos posted of exploits for the ps3 are taken by the same person who is demonstrating the exploit and so they are very shaky do none of these people have friends who could film them while they work or is it true that all gamers are lonely?
