Haters of Insomniac Games' Resistance: Fall of Man and its upcoming sequel may sneer at the promise of 60-player battles online, saying that such games would be too chaotic to be fun. Insomniac Games President Ted Price, however, says his team is well aware of the possible risks, and they're working on a system to make the numbers give them the advantage.

“With Resistance: Fall of Man we definitely broke new ground when it came to sheer size and scale, but with Resistance 2 we’re upping the ante once again," said Price at SCEE's PlayStation Day shindig. "We’re going for 40-60 players in our battles."

"Now we’re well aware at Insomniac that more players doesn’t necessarily mean better gameplay," he continues. "So our rallying cry for Resistance 2 competitive has been ‘massive battles, more intimacy’."

Price explains that this won't be anything like a medieval battle where warriors clash in the middle of a field to ignite a chaotic blaze. He spoke of battles within battles where players will be divided into smaller squads to engage in tactical skirmishes. That way, the action is preserved, the massiveness will be there, and the cerebral aspects remain intact.

“Bottom line, Resistance 2 competitive has a lot to offer…  and we think it’s going to be breaking new ground on PlayStation 3 and online in general, but that’s just a quarter of the overall game," Price concludes.
