Background downloading here only, nada elsewhere? - Image 1Innerbits.com dropped this unconfirmed hint that background downloading, which is to come with FW 1.60, is limited to the XMB environment only and will pause during a game. Innerbits.com claims to have obtained this information from anonymous "contacts in the industry" who gave a summary of a "high-level" Sony meeting.

According to Innerbits' unnamed contacts, downloads will be paused and queued once the player starts a game, and will be resumed once a player exists back to the XMB. The stated reason is that the PS3 devotes system resources to the game play and to cut loose some power for background downloading could affect the game. They also mentioned that future firmware updates after 1.60 could incorporate background downloading during less-intensive moments of the game, such as menus.

Ultimately, a lot of this is still claimed (hence, rumor), and Innerbits hasn't disclosed hard proof, but we're sure this will still generate some intense, even heated discussion below. And it's still a few weeks away to the Euro launch (the expected release of FW 1.60). If confirmed, the more patient among us will take what we can get, hope FW 1.6x+ resolves this little quibble ASAP, but then there's a reason why patience is a virtue.

I never have gotten one of those errors but still I'm very happy if I could listen to music and watch a few videos while the thing is downloading so even if this is true then I'm happy

Yes it does have background downloading. Once a download has started you can do anything, watch a movie, play a game, use menus and it continues to download. It works great

u can queue 6 downloads at a time so that when 1 finishes - another will begin : )

Man what the hell sony, I'm one of your biggest supporters and you're killing me. You had a full year to give the PS3 every feature the 360 has and then your own littles ones and you have nothing. Sure everyone would say you're copying but who cares. You guys better get the system and they crappy as hell PSN running smooth soon...good thing you have a strong game line-up and a huge fanbase...

» if this a gay rumor

why the hell is everyone taking it as fact?

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-02-27
 » Because...

It's highly feasable, the XMB already uses more resources then the 360's dash...

The PS3 pretty much uses an embedded mozilla browser, whereas 360 has completely custom code for the downloads.

So no doubt mozzilla just uses too many resources for a game to run properly...

Thing that confuses me is if PS3 really is "twice as powerful" as 360, then even without custom code, they should have no problem downloading durring gameplay....but alas, the truth is comming out....and I guess we have to wait a few weeks to truly find out...

» If you want to download and play, buy a crappy PC

...of a crappy Xbox 360, I suppose. Actually, I now have both PS3 and Xbox 360. I could give a ^#$#% less if Xbox can background download during a game, if it means that PS3 would have to have as stupid + clunky an interface as 360's menu system. But, the bottom line is really WHY would you want to buy a GAME SYSTEM, optimized for GAMES, and then have it chug because you want to download a 30second HiDef movie preview while you play? Let the game developers concentrate on GAME/system optomization; not multitasking.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2007-02-27
 » ...

It probably is bull***** though. I can't understand why sony can't implement background downloading when a game uses download and upload code to enable online functionality.

However if it is true I can see that most people wouldn't see this as a huge problem and it's a start atleast. The problem starts when developers want to deliver in game downloadable content to users (a feature that has been mentioned by sony before specifically for GTHD and Singstar). We know that the PS3 version of Oblivion skipped downloadable content because lack of functionality on Sony's part for them to deliver that feature.

Anyway, moving on.

 » Damonous

Damonous its not a matter of why would you want to its the principle of the thing. PS3 had over a year more time than xbox 360 to get the bugs out and add features but the fact that the so called ''twice as powerful system'' cant background download is just a little retarded for my liking. Sure you might not need it but what if, just what if you ever WANT to download something but still are dying to play a new game you just bought wouldn't you like the option. I own both PS3 and 360 also and as far as this ''stupid + Clunky'' menus go your wrong. Its so much more user friendly and actually does look cool. I can even bet the most hardcore of PS3 Fanboys will agree. Also i still yet to see what makes the PS3 superior to 360. As of yet I still think 360 is a better, more well planned and developed console.

i wonder if any one has this problem??

the first day i got ma PS3 the controller only need to sync once with tha usb and now itslike every time i turn i of i gotta hook it up dnt no why ?? dusent happen to my cuz i think its cuz da new firmware (he never upgrades )

I use to hook up a generic keyboard that for some reason like my controler off. So I got a better one and it has no conflict. Also for some reason before you play PS2's games on the PS3 it lose connection.

This is not a rumor and this is kinda old news QJ.

BG DLing with XMB is a good start though. At least you can do something while waiting.

IN-GAME downloading should get here by the end of the year.

   by ...gEEz (Unregistered) - 2007-02-27
 » See, this is why

Comparing the 360 to Ps3 is getting really old. Each has its advantages and disavantages. Gimme a break. I'm sure if the ps3 came out before the xbox360, alot of the 360'ers would be comparing their ***** to the ps3.

Give Sony time to realize their mistakes and I'm sure they'll be picking up the pace.

 » Rumor.

This article is completly false in the reason why background downloading in-game isnt done and therefore I dont trust it.

out of the 7 SPEs of the Cell, 1 is always reserved for the OS leaving 6 for game use.

Even in a game, you can use the Dual Thread PowerPC processor and 6 SPEs leaving 1 Cell to do work for the OS.

So leaving out in-game downloading because of the extra power it would provide without having it would mean that games can use the 7th SPE as well. Since games cant use it, there is no loss in performance because that SPE is always dedicated to the OS.

 » Amiga 1000 is better than PS3

Face it the PS3 cannot do what even the Commodore Amiga 1000 was doing back around 1982 and that is FULL MULTITASKING, lol so much for the cell, The Amiga custom chips Agnus and Denice kicks its ass even though its about 20 + years old now

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-02-28
 » Chances are...

it has absolutely nothing to do with the cell, everything to do with memory and system architecture.

It's either that Mozilla needs needs too much memory when downloading, or, that the PS3's HDD is 5400RPM and that by constantly writing to it when you are downloading, you would be slowing down all the game data (remember those games you had to "install" to get good performance) that is being read from it....Another or, is that there is a bottleneck within the PS3 on one of the busses, and the extra couple megabits a second are needed by the system...who knows really, guess we have to wait and see...

 » Who cares

As long as I can play music or something while it downloads I'd be fine, or ***** around with the pictures...

You know what sony really needs to add
The ability to play MUSIC while playing around in the xmb, or online, or whenever... The music player shouldn't have to stop every time you want to answer an im or something...

   Re: antaeus - 2007-02-27
 » ?

what are you talking about you can already go surf the web while you listen to music and are messing around with the interface unless you want to watch a movie of course

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-28
 » give it up

The PS3 is a PC imposter.
Kinda like "Mr Common Sense is a Moron (Unregistered)"
It can never top the real thing so why try?
XBOX 360 + PC + all you need.

   by lansingone - 2007-02-28
 » re vietone

funny i asked something similar on a forum somewhere, and the answer i got was that the OS does not mean the XMB, it's some sort of OS that helps games run a little faster.

re mik3yl3
you need to upgrade your firmware to get the features they say they added, and they added a fix to the PS2 graphics problem some time ago

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-02-28
 » No...

There is no OS that "helps games run faster"

XMB and OS are the same thing, in which case Vietone was correct. 1 SPU is always reserved so that the menu will pop up when you hit the guide button (or whatever they call the big ps3 button) and there is always another SPU that the game has to give over once the button is pressed. Otherwise there would be a longer delay to see the menu when you pressed the button...

its a feature they are probably holding off for a time where the ps3 gets haxed and you have to make a choice to upgrade firmware. kind of like theyve been doing with the psp.
