ibmBack in May, The Inquirer reported that yields of the Cell microprocessor for the PS3 are performing poorly. Since then, there have been rumors left and right about yields being poor.

Now another unnamed source of The Inquirer has claimed that IBM executives have informed employees that the yields are "on or above" targets. So as not to turn you guys off, we'll cut to the chase and say that good chip design results in a 90% yield. Which means of course that any number below that figure could only be bad. So, perhaps, the super chip has already reached that level, prompting IBM executives to share the good news with its employees.

The source also said that IBM has already shipped the first full allotment to Sony under a 'take or pay' arrangement. (whereby Sony has the obligation of either taking delivery of the goods or paying a specified amount), and that Sony must have "quite a stockpile of the processors in a warehouse somewhere".

We would have preferred a direct quote from IBM, and until we get that, we'll treat this news the same way we treated the stuff that came before it - as rumors. While we don't have another source to verify the authenticity of the claim, it's good to hear things might be getting better for the PS3 chip, if it did perform poorly in the first place.

Here's hoping the good folks at IBM speak up and clarify the issue!

 » hum...

we should create a false news bashing to death sony on their ps3, so the stocks goes on the looses and then we buy a lot, say it was a false rumor, wait for the ps3 to hit the store and sell the stocks when they acheive their top!

lol, just joking, but maybe's trying to do that? I wonder if M$ have some sony's stocks.... lol

anyway this news mean not really something, ps3 basher use fake news, for myself ( I sony fanboy ) I'll only wait and see the real news, not rumors, because anyway I'll buy a ps3 even if america is attacked by aliens... hum no, I think I could take arms, steal one of their vessel, go to their main ship, be supprised to see they look like us and that they are all beautifull girls, then I kill the rest of humans and move from planet to planet with them... LOL that was weird, anyway, I'll buy one even if the news if false ( just hoping for less casualties that the x360 launch... )

 » qj.net you dumb people

that whole "Cell yields poorly" by the Inquirer was proven fasle a couple weeks after it came out. Don't *****ing believe anything by that site. They use rumors and false evidence as news. Kinda like qj.net... lol...

 » got it wrong

Why does QJ.net always word 'Yield' to mean that the chip isnt performing. What it actually means is production yield in that they are not producing as many as they thought. It has nothing to do with the chips performance or power.

QJ.NET, GET IT RIGHT FFS!

» How did they got the yield rates higher?

Díd they finally set the specs down to 2.8Ghz for the PS3?

 » Uhmm.. I dunno.

I'm not a PS3 hater (looking forward to it actually), and I don't want to dump on this article, but I happen to work for the company in question here.

I'll just say this: WE SAY A LOT OF THINGS.

well IBM is making it so why would they say they aren't doing a good job. Yet seeing that it is IBM I think they do a good job and I see this as a nice thing. However everyone says alot and what's on paper is never always what's in the product

 » i don't think so

i'm a huge Sony and PS3 supporter, but i refuse to believe anything the Inquirer posts, whether good or bad, after that "low yield" story they posted earlier. practically everything on that site is rubbish, and i think they're trying to save face by posting something positive and "non-biased" about the PS3, but if you look at their archived stories, it's mostly negative about Sony (whether PS2 or PS3). once the PS3 comes out, sells like hotcakes, and MGS4 and FFXIII come out, there is going to be a huge, a$$licking turnaround like never before seen in the history of video games (and i've been playing video games since 1985).

 » Let's see...

Low yield is always expected at the beginning. But as time goes by, the yields start raising. That's just how it is. If you need to know more about that, Google it.

 » wait wait wait

I refuse to hear ps3 talkers who keep on bringing up FFXIII. 12 JUST came out across the way it's not even in america. All you people who think FFXIII is coming out anytime soon can go spit cuz no way it aint gonna happen
