PlayStation 3 - Image 1While most of us had no problems with updating to PlayStation 3 firmware 2.42 a few days back, some users have been reporting trouble with it. Over at Product Review, readers have been lamenting all sorts of troubles allegedly caused by the update.

The majority of trouble reports claim that Blu-ray discs have stopped working after applying the update. Another cited connection troubles, while someone said his game saves have been deleted.

On this blogger's end, I have experienced no such issues. I updated a couple of PS3s last week and they're in tip-top form.

Have you been having trouble with the update? We'd like to hear about it if anything flimsy's been going on.

 » huh?

Reports from where? I have my ear to the ground in the PS3 community pretty much all the time and I havent heard a single word regarding problems in 2.42.

I certainly havent had any. I've been playing Eden like crazy and I know many other people have as well.

I think whoever made these claims needs something a little more substantial than "Our PS3 is fine, but we're hearing reports that..."

I call BS on this one.

» Playstation 3 firmware 2.42 update causing blu-ray playback to fail

I purchased the blu-ray directors cut of Beowulf at Target yesterday and put it in to play last night and the video would not display. I updated the firmware to 2.42 and then none of my blu-rays would display video. I went into reset the system and now my other blu-rays will play video but the Beowulf disc is still failing. I get a 800 error. Any ideas on what's up with this? It's pretty crazy to me the industry has come up with a "standard" so full of bugs it doesn't "just work". This kind of thing (not to mention the $37 price tag) will speed my adoption of downloaded movies on AppleTV and other devices. Another seamless Sony experience!

I think it's becoming a trend to blame all sorts of stuff on firmware updates. But that's just me.

   Re: Quixand - 2008-08-04
 » i agree 100%

with you on that Glen...

but on my end... i'm playing DMC4 again as i still have a couple of items to unlock, also been playing buzz online saturday night and i also just watched Cloverfield on Blu Ray last friday..

so my Blu Rays plays ok... my games do too as well as online.

although my controller ran out of power midway so i had to switch controllers so maybe i should blame 2.42 for that!!! hahaha!!!... better yet maybe i should just hold off and wait for the next firmware and blame that one instead.

 » LOL!

Was playing online Fight Night earlier and I kicked this kid's ass. he said he was having connection issues. Maybe he can blame his loss on 2.42 too! Maybe he'll beat me when 2.43 comes along. :)

totally agree with you Glen. The funny thing that people start noticing these "problems" weeks after the firmware update is out. I would believe them if they would happen right after the launch of the FW, but now....

Re: Glen D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-08-04
 » funny thing

I remember this guy's story about his PS3 freezing up when 2.40 came along. he whined about it until he found out that it was his lens that was acting up. pwnd!

 » No probs here

Even v2.40 installed perfectly and I never had a problem with GTA4 either.

   by Phanatic - 2008-08-04
 » Doesn't surprise me...

I never got the chance for 2.42 to break my system. The previous 2 did enough damage.

1) Been a 60GB, backwards-compatible PS3 owner since October '07. Never had a problem playing any games or Blu-Ray discs. Even watched a movie with no issues the day 2.40 came out.

2) 2.40 FW released. Installed without a hitch - I thought. That night went to play a Blu-Ray movie, continuously got an "Invalid Media" error. Same with PS3 games - no go. PS2 games and regular DVDs play fine.

3) Learned of the 2.40 problems. Decided to wait until 2.41, to see if my problems were solved.

4) 2.41 FW released and installed. Not only do PS3 games and Blu-Rays not work, now NO discs will play. No DVD media, no CD media - nothing.

My PS3 is currently sitting on a repair bench in Texas somewhere, thanks to the last few firmware updates. Any guesses on how paranoid I'll be to do another one in the future, when I get my system back?

   Re: Jin Wu - 2008-08-04
 » Don't buy it!

but if you say so! the only prob I have had in my launch model was dust and the fans whirring loudly. compressed air cleared that up so no prob.

bad flashes are common in pc upgrades but returning to factory defaults always works.

   Re: chessboxer - 2008-08-04
 » not firmware issue

Those problems are not related to the firmware.

IF you had a problem with v2.40, you would have noticed it immediately after the PS3 rebooted because you wouldn't see the XMB.

Your issue is most probably caused by the laser wearing out. This has happened with many 60GB PS3's. Thankfully my 60GB UK launch model is still going harder then a pr0n star.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2008-08-04
 » don't blame the firmware

I think you've got a laser problem too. Probably misalignment.

It's common for some discs to stop working, then later nothing works. It seems to be one of the most common PS3 problems.

 » No Problem.

I updated my ps3 on Friday around 18:00 CAT +2hours (Cape Town) and my ps3 is working just fine. and I have been playing games, music and movies(mpeg II) with no problems at all.
Tough luck to guys with the faulty machines.

 » I only know of 2 problems.

I know of 2 problems but they are from the 2.40 update which haven't got fixed yet. 1 is the web browser. On certain forums you will have to refresh to see the updated list of topics and such. The other is that your mic will randomly stop working (you will still be able to hear people talk but you won't be able to talk). I know this effects USB mics.

Wasn't the Mic bug fixed in 2.41/2.42 ?

wutever man.. i have NEVER had any problems at all with my ps3 PERIOD.
(freezing occasionally doesnt count as all systems do that naturally)...
but no FW ever effected my ps3.. my fan used to be loud do to exccessive dust but i have a sepreate cooler added onto it now witch makes it silent again.

ive got the flawless motorstorm 80gb bundle i bought back in NOV 07.

damn ps3 is the best.

 » mmm

DNAgent i agree with you about the USB mic thing, but mine's only done it once so that might not be enough to go on. Also i will say ive been having some sign in issues, but again this has only happened 3 times (both after 2.42)...and it seems that there is always issues with the sign in thing anyway. i brought my ps3 the day it came out, and thats the extent of my problems...possibly brought on by 2.42...dunno

 » New Blu-Ray movie doesn't work

I have a 60GB PS3 and my copy of Rambo doesn't work anymore. It says it's just a data disc. Older Blu-Ray discs work fine though. Maybe the new update didn't include the Blu-Ray updates to play new movies.
