Our hopes have been dashed to the rocks once again. News a few days ago about a retail PS3 unit's HDD getting decrypted sure made quite a stir, but apparently, we've been hoodwinked. According to some investigations made by other hackers (special thanks to knightsolidus, idone, and NDT) on PS3News, the facts are these: The files are real, but they were dumped from a TEST PS3 (old news), from its /dev_flash (Thanks NDT!) folder which is 100% accessable with a TEST. Furthermore, the explanation of the "encryption" was all wrong (see my earlier post). On top of that, the real research done was 'borrowed' (to put it nicely) by DemonHades from the source... namely knightsolidus, who has been doing research with the PS3 HDD. He made some interesting findings (hitting a similiar roadblock that we did, but we are now working together to try to get past it), however, currently no part of the hard disk drive has been decrypted. Though the hackers who did the investigation are having no ill will towards DemonHades, they're putting this drama aside and that "it would be appreciated if he came clean with his users so we all can move forward working together." Thanks to emaster101 for giving us a heads up on this! Related articles: |

I see where you're coming from and undertstand why you don't want hacks for PS3.
I do think hackers should NOT bother with finding out how to play back-up PS3 games, as this would get illgally exploited and would harm Sony and it's developers, who would then therefore make games for other platforms - this is what happened with the PSP.
However, I suppose emulators and homebrew would be a sweet thing...
playing mario 64 ...goldeneye on the PS3...:)

Psp pretty much died of games after "back ups" were playable. I dont think anyone would want this for the ps3. The only motivation for decrypting this thing should be to allow homebrew. And maybe backwards compatibility for those of us without it :)

» i just love it when...
people blame piracy for the reason the psp failed.. because clearly it not possible for a system to fail even tho it doesnt suck.. anyone remember dreamcast? sega saturn? hell lets go back to sega cd.. how come phillips doesnt make video games anymore? so clearly they all failed because "pirates" ruined it for everyone....

to all those hypocrites.
we want the ps3 hacked so we can play backup games and or expand what it can do be it legal or illegal.
if you're all really serious and just wants to play homebrew, emulators and stuff hell you have a PC that can emulate almost anything and ps3 linux also does decent amount of emulation too.
and to the faker, i know you'll pay the price for your prank.

Don't trust PS3News. As in the past, they lie when it's beneficial to do so -- just look at their history with the PSP.

» No HomeBrew?
Perhaps i'm ignorant but there is always the possibility to boot up Linux and run/make all the apps you want..?
So the need for homebrew.. it is not really there?

» Good news actually...
No decryption means no illegal backups and piracy that comes with it (like on 360).

» I hope the PS3 never gets hacked
Sony probably hired a team of hackers to constantly try to hack the ps3 and when an exploit is found Sony will address it with a firmware patch or a hardware revision.

» quote of pirate ps3hax
I quote pirate of ps3hax:
'his method was actually discovered a while ago, but it was never released publicly.
knightsolidus had actually managed to figure it out on his own how to decrypt the HDD, so obviously it would seem new to him and Demonhades. CJPC/PS3News did not want this information released so they bribed Demonhades with the PS3 SDK...Demonhades refused and released information on his website. As if this was done on retail or test PS3, it shouldnt matter to be honest because they both are the same (we are not sure which yet though).
Why PS3News is chanting this fake is beyond me (e-fame?).
Leave it to others to cause drama in the scene'
hope this will clear things up :)

all you KIDS who say you don't want consoles to run homebrew, always are the first ones signing into these forums looking for information on them. aka you'll be the first ones downloading it, stop trying to act like boyscouts and doing the exact opposite. If you don't care for homebrew then just simply IGNORE the topic, and move on.
