Sony's PlayStation 3 next-gen console - Image 1Here's something that may cheer up PlayStation 3 gamers who were expecting the end of backwards compatible models as we know it. Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton announced that they will be reviving the 80 GB PS3 model for North America as part of the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots bundle which will be released later this year.

To help solidify this claim, SCEA Public Relations manager Al De Leon (aldeleon) confirmed on the PlayStation Blog that the upcoming 80 GB model will include PS2 backwards compatibility in a recent MGS4 article posted yesterday.

If you don't believe us, here's a direct quote taken from aldeleon's comment on the PlayStation Blog: "Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility".

So for those of you who want to score a backwards compatible PS3 console, you might as well keep you eyes out for this upcoming game bundle containing the highly anticipated sequel. Despite this move from Sony, it's still unsure whether or not the company will change their strategy regarding the availability of backwards compatible PS3 models in the future.

» If this has full PS2 compatability

and a good price, this may be the bundle I'll get for me 1st (and hopefully last) PS3.

This deal just keeps getting better, I'm definitely getting this for m first PS3

But it does say in the article "some PS2 BC", and I think they'd say full BC if it were ful BC, so that sucks.

Well, this shuts up all the naysayers. There's no reason at all to drop PS2 BC from all SKUs. If you hate BC that much, just shut up and get a stripped down 40gb. I'll be chilling with my 80 in the meantime.

Losing them money or not, I know too many people that would still rather own the 60 gb with full bc...

Does anyone know if this unit will come with the new Dual Shock 3 since Metal Gear will be using the vibrate functionality for some of it's gameplay?

 » my guess is

Dual Shock 3 will still be a separate purchase (throughout 2008),
and since all ps3 SKU only has 1 sixaxis controller, its pretty much OK to buy another controller but make sure its dual shock 3.

even though i dont like rumble, i bought a dual shock 3 for the sake of having another controller plus so i can feel the groove in future games while pawning my lil cousin.

 » Some Facts

This bundle's ps3 has the same software emulation as the current 80gig bundle. I.E. No emotion engine

Dualshock 3 is included in this bundle and available for seperate purchase in April 2008

Bundle comes out for same time release as MGS4

If you doubt any of these, check the recent articles anywhere. It's all over the net.

 » Makes me wonder...

I have an original 60GB (personally upgraded to 120GB) unit that has the EE hardware. But, does the current FW actually use it anymore? I have the latest FW revision that the 80GB units also have. Does the FW look for the presence of the EE and use it if available, or does my 60GB unit software-emulate the EE to keep FW variations to a minimum for Sony? I suppose only a Sony tech person could answer this, and I don't know if they are allowed. But if anyone has an insider... Enquiring minds want to know...
