GTa IV will be available both on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - Image 1The GTA franchise has already gathered a strong following through out the years. With Grand Theft Auto IV though, the fan base will be divided between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

If you have the former and therefore will be playing the video game title on that platform, we suggest you take this next one with a grain of salt. This is part of the interview conducted by the Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) with Rockstar Creative Vice President Dan Houser:

OPM: On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?

Houser: Yep.

As if realizing what he just uttered, Houser followed up the rather short answer with, "To be honest with you, we haven't solved all those riddles yet. The difficulties aren't limited to working on Microsoft's box. Both have enormous challenges, both have their own particular pleasures and pains."

However, Rockstar is reportedly giving a select group of press people a demo and preview of Grand Theft Auto IV using a 360. We guess we'll all just have to see when the game becomes available on October 16.

agreed on Quixand. having ps3 does make HD gaming easier. buy a game for it and enjoy. game programmers and consumers are really reaping some pleasure on sony PS3's design.

to mr hahaha, Xbox360 dont need Blu-ray it has its own HD-DVD drive, all they need to do is to make the 360 read HD-DVD games through its external HD_DVD drive add on. i think dual layer HD-DVD 30gb is sufficient to have the GTA4 complete content, but i doubt that the xbox 360 HD-DVD can be programed to be used properly with it because if it can then MS should have enabled it when the add-on was launched.

I doubt there was a problem since, it was on the PC first, Than the 360. A dvd9 is enough for that game. Since Rockstar is making the game for both at the same time I'm sure it is hard to have all that space on a blu-ray and than try to fit it on dvd9. It's OK, 360 owners will be happy to pay for downloadable content to make up for a shorter game out the box. You got to love an Xboy, there's one born every minute.

   Re: Slipstream0 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-02
 » Blu-Ray

I think the problems with blu-ray and gaming have been addressed by Oblivion. For those who dont know, they had to duplicate files in diffirent places on the blu-ray disk to allow it to stream files and have a reasonable load time due to the slow read speed compared to DVD.

So is more space worth it if you need to put the game on there 2-3 times to componsate for the slow read speed?

Google it if you dont believe me. I think the artivle was on IGN.

I do agree not requiring a HDD was stupid tho.

   Re: meee (Unregistered) - 2007-05-02
 » to Slipstream0

do you know what your tlaking about? the bluray drive speed is 2x yea. but its different when you compare it to the dvd. a 2x bluray is about equal to an 8x dvdv drive which is what the 360 has correct me if im wrong because im sure the numebrs are very close to that.

   Re: DerDude (Unregistered) - 2007-05-02
» yes meee your right.. kinda..

A 12x CAV drive like the one in the 360 will be 12x speed for around 15% of the outer disc, that figure is peak performance. The closer to the inner ring it gets the slower accesses get (5x speed on the inner ring) - probable average: around 8x speed. Another interesting thing seems to escape everyone is that the 12x DVD drive in the 360 only reads dual layer discs at a maximum of 8x speed. As it was in single layer, the 8x speed is peak performance. The 2x speed BD drive performs quite well in this case: a BD25 on PS3 fares better than a DVD9 on the 360. The great majority of 360 games are and will be pressed on DVD9s. Another interesting point with existing CLV BD drives is that they do not have the dual layer penalization with DVD dics. If a BD drive is rated to read DVDs at 8x, it will read dual layer DVDs at 8x as well. This is why Sony is comfortable with its choice and knows it will hold its own against MS's choice in the DVD format.

Caching thankfully minimizes either DVD or BD's shortcomings, and careful authoring on either format will help minimize speed issues. These technicalities shouldn't matter to a true gamer and any advantages in either format will in all likelyhood go unnoticed in any regard to the untrained.

I saw the articles on read speeds as well (although also can't remember where). PS3 read speeds are well below that of the 360.

I have to admit that not making the HDD mandatory on the 360 was a rookie move though. Core users have to buy a $40 (AUD) memory card to save games anyways, so why not just charge a little more and add the hard drive?

   Re: B4H4M00T - 2007-05-02

@Slipstream0 non need for dupe data the 4.3GB cache on the hdd solves the issue.. the game loads extremely fast and runs smoothly :)

the game's load times are the equivilent of that of the PC versions which means almost instant loads in some cases and almost always less than 5 seconds.

"I think the problems with blu-ray and gaming have been addressed by Oblivion. For those who dont know, they had to duplicate files in diffirent places on the blu-ray disk to allow it to stream files "

That was denied by the developers. They simply install to the hard drive.

   Re: SummerGamer (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » Wrong!

"Another interesting thing seems to escape everyone is that the 12x DVD drive in the 360 only reads dual layer discs at a maximum of 8x speed"

That's completely wrong. You're making the assumption that the DVD drive in the 360 is a standard 12x DVD drive, where the 12x speed is for single-layered discs, with dual-layered read at 8x or lower.

The DVD drive in the 360 is rated at 12x for dual-layered disks in the official specs. This is like many 16x DVD drives, where they read sl at 16x, but dl at 12x or less. Only dl disks are used on the 360, therefore it's 12x, but on the PC, the drive in the 360 would actually be a 16x DVD drive.

"yes...you are right...except the dvd drive doesn't read at a constant 12x!! read DerDude's post above you fool!!"

Why do guys like you always have to resort to name calling and insults? Are you THAT immature and insecure? Let's get back to the discussion, without insults please.

I am fully aware of the performance of DVD drives thank you, but it is STILL an 12x dual-layer drive in the 360 and not 8x, and that's a BIG difference.

As I said, it is rated as 12x DVD dual-layer in the specs, and MS have stated this numerous times in interviews;

http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/support/xbox360/manuals/xbox360specs.htm

"12x dual-layer DVD-ROM"

So let's compare shall we.

2x Blu-ray reads at a constant 9MB/s.

1x DVD reads data at 11.08Mb/s.

12x DVD reads data at 132.96Mb/s (11.08*12), which is 16.62MB/s.

This is much faster than Blu-ray's 9MB/s, but this is on the outermost track. On DVD, without going into details, the innermost track reads at the speed of the outer track divided by 2.32, which is 7.16MB/s. Less than 2x Blu-ray of course.

However, this means that after the first GB of data has been read from DVD on the 360, the drive will now be performing at the speed of Blu-ray in the PS3, and data after that will be read progressively faster, hence above the speed of Blu-ray.

On average, the 12x DVD drive in the 360 will offer about 11.9MB/s. However, as seen last gen, devs can (and do) organise their data so that those they want to be read fastest are on the outer tracks of the DVD, hence improving the transfer speed performance quite significantly.

So whichever way you spin it, the DVD drive in the 360 offer much read performance than the Blu-ray drive in the PS3, and devs have confirmed this.

I NEVER said anything about the 360 having limitations. These folks jumped in between a conversation my team was having and misheard. We were talking about the cost of the PS3's Blu-Ray discs and how slow they are to load such a huge environment, that a block of the game will be installed on the PS3's hard drive, while on the 360 we don't really have to do that. They totally misinterpreted what we were referring to. Please ignore this "article". Thank you for supporting our company!

 » LOL ......funny

ok! It's true that the PS3 has better hardware feature for ambitious next-gen games. But xbox360 have more install base. So PS3 owner have to suffer from that. Don't get me wrong...M$ already prove that by releasing the X360 elite to get closer to the PS3 hardware. If it was not the case they didn't have made it...no. Why lose more money on fabric. It's a marketing shot! And if blu-ray win , trust me they will have a blu-ray add-on, and blu-ray drive in there next xbox.

Now for GTA IV it will be better on X360 even with those limitations. Why... because they already know the hardware ( tennis table...) So maybe xbox owners will have to switch disc for each island (joke), but it will run smoother.

Sony Fans have to wait there turn on this one.

Why do the PS3 fans make it out like every 360 fails?

They're jealous of the 360's success, plain and simple.

The 360 version of GTA will have downloadable content, while the PS3 version will not. That is the biggest difference between the two.

 » More non"sense"

Yeah you get to pay for extra missions. You are soo lucky. It would suck if your console had some kind of "next-gen" Media format that could hold more than just a dvd9....wait for it.....Oh that's right the ps3 does that already. Why do you think it went from "both games will be the same except the 360 will have downloadable content" to "the games will be different following the opening mission strand" because they can and probably will add more to the ps3 version, just because they can.

Oh, its nice to finally see PS3 owners jumping for joy, it really is. Congradulations!

Of course, rockstar failed to mention that they will also have an enormously easier job of meeting their goal of "no-loading-screens" with the 360, as opposed to the PS3 trying to load gigs of data off of a 2x drive.

BD 2x [more data to load + slower disc speed + DUPLICAE DATA! [whats the point of more space???}]

   Re: Extinction (Unregistered) - 2007-05-02
 » Too bad for you....

This is why Sony is comfortable with its choice and knows it will hold its own against MS's choice in the DVD format

Lol, even with your blu-ray thingy with 50 gigs you can´t do a game with proper textures in the Pstriple...

Lair, Hevenly Sword, Resistance... all these games have textures that look like *****. Gears of War is still the game with best graphics in consoles.

So f$ck you Sony Boys, Xbox 360 F$cking ownz. And the GTA4 Xbox 360 version will be the best version. Acheivements!!!1

 » You know what's funny?

360 fans trying to make it sound like a bad thing that they had to duplicate data for Oblivion on the disc and that you have to install a part of the game on the HDD. Well that's another reason to have Blu-Ray and 60 GB: so you can have a better game like the PS3 version.

 » Well, it's a funny story actually...

My 360 broke a few weeks back and I had do ship it off to M$ for repair. They've since fixed it but now require payent for their shoddy repair job before they will ship it back to me.

Of course I do not have enough cash to cover the repair because I still live at home with my mommy (if I had any money I would've bought a PS3 instead... duh).

So right now I've been working it off with the help of my best buds, getting bent over the arm of my mothers soft leather couch and earning $0.05 for every @ss packing session they have at me. I'm up to $20 right now, and plan on having enough to pay for the repair in a few more days.

We'll see if my @ss can keep up with the demands, it sure is sore.

I haven't commented because this is obviously a lie, if you actually knew anything at all you'd know the 360 is perfect in every way and anything even remotely criticizing the 360 is a complete lie. It's actually the PS3 that Rockstar is having trouble getting GTA4 to work on, it's just a mis-print. Nothing bad can happen to Microsoft.

Are you sick of the 2 remotely entertaining games yet?

Is the PS3 somehow NOT overrated?
I mean, it's more relaible, but what the hell is it good for?

Of course something that never gets used and has only been out for 5 months is going to be more reliable.

Non"sense" is so busy playing his 360 that he trolls ps3 news. In case you didn't know being more reliable (I spelled it right btw) means you are not sending it back to get fixed. That allows you to actually play games, it would also curb some of your trolling.

» Only CORE 360s, nothing more.

This comes from Official Playstation Magazine, a magazine officially licensed by Sony, so Im betting its just ANOTHER bull***** lie that sony is trying to pull.

In the end it wont matter, because despite the Core having no HDD (and who buys the Core without buying the HDD anyways? wtf), Rockstar will still be making the game flawlessly on the Premium and Elite consoles.

Not only that but Im sure just as every single other multiplatform game released between PS3 and Xbox 360, the 360 version will not only look better (SCDA anyone?), but it will also play better since almost every PS3 game has framerate issues.

So while you PS3 *fanboys* have your day in the sun now, we 360 fans will remember today and be sure to throw it right back at you when our version is ultimately better like always.

Sad, especially concidering half of you tards dont even know what youre bashing about. The article only states that theyre having trouble with the CORE 360s, and almost no one has a Core anyways.

"and who buys the Core without buying the HDD anyways? wtf)"

the same type of people who settle for a 20GB ps3. but the ps3 still has a HDD in it. So when 360 fans bash the 20GB ps3 cuz its discontinued... we can all look back at this quote and know that the 20GB ps3 doesnt suck since it was discontinued...thanks for clarifying

   Re: 456878 (Unregistered) - 2007-05-03
 » NO

Rockstar can't use the hard disk in any 360 game for full 100% Cache. You see game developers like Rockstar don't know exactly how many people own the Core or Premium or Elite. So they don't know exactly who is going to be playing the game on their 360 using the hard disk or not. On the other hand every PS3 ever made has a hard disk. So the PS3 version will be the one with the advantage on using the hard disk as cache.
