Rumor: Details emerge regarding PlayStation 3's firmware update 2.40 - Image 1As the readers will recall, we've recently been running into quite a bit of speculation regarding the upcoming firmware 2.4 update for the PlayStation 3. For one, there was the matter of Sony UK's Ray Maguire, who hinted that it would come packaged with an in-game communication feature.

Then there was that bit about PixelJunk Eden's support for the PS3's upcoming XMB Trophy feature, also speculated to arrive with firmware 2.40. Fast forward to today, and it looks like more details regarding this much-discussed update have emerged, as told by a reported company insider.

According to the insider, firmware update 2.4 will also carry the groundwork for the PS3's Movie Store function, slated for a September release. As for the rest of the rumor's details (quoting whoelse's blog):
  • Access your XMB chat features from any game.
  • 2D trophies from the XMB where 70% of current titles will support them straight away
  • Video Coding and groundwork for the Movie Store (Out Sept)
The insider further indicates that the update will be arriving before the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 (currently set for June 12). We remind the readers that as this is strictly a rumor until more solid information can be found, you'll want to take this info with a pinch of salt. Keep in touch in case we receive any sort of confirmation regarding this matter

that was a old rumour, Sony's already come back and said that it will be available in the fall. They may push it forward, but they have yet to push anything forward.

 » Fall?

I thought they said summer. Maybe your confusing it with Home, or maybe Im wrong. Confused.

   Re: RexNox - 2008-05-19
» I've read what Ray McGuire and...

Sev have said. I haven't seen anything that suggests it is true. Unless, summer is defined as fall and fall is being nice.

Let me explain...if you have a major selling point for your product, would you take a "let'em see it when they get it" or would you advertise it. Now, if you have a "system seller" like MGS4 in June and you know it will bring awareness to the system...would you hide that a major feature will be in place by then?

Chances are the next bigboy after MGS4 is Madden 09. I'm guessing you'll see them attach XMB to it...if we're lucky.

August IS summer but....I'll call it early fall because some kids go back to school in August.

If they just release it unattached (to a campaign), it would just justify the M$ stance that the console war was over and PS3 is just "trying" to catch up.

SO as far as I'm concerned, XMB is coming out much later.

 » Good, but...

Why has it taken so long for them to integrate the XMB in-game? I mean, it was with the 360 from the start, and how annoying is it not being able to access your message box without quitting the game? Really, this should be a top priority for Sony, let's get the basics right first (XMB, Online Play) THEN, and only then, should they worry about all these money making spin-offs, such as this movie store (which will probably be more expensive than it'll be worth.)

   Re: SikWitThiz - 2008-05-19
» This why they didnt do it yet

Because they knew people would complain and compare what they did verse M$. Then you got not stop BS comments about whose is better. All i want is for them to keep putting things out right rather just releasing $h|t to please people. Thats when issue arise and system crashes because they rushed it out. Everything hardware and software wise was rushed on the 360 for the most part so if they do this right everybody will be happy in the end. Just remember you will complain later if they just throw this out for people who want it so bad.

 » Money making spin-offs

@wintermute: I think Sony earns the right to focus on a "money making spin-off" every now and then ... considering that they are providing us with free online play vs Microsoft's pay-to-play policy. (And, of course, that didn't stop MS from focusing on "money making spin-offs". Not to mention, 'diverting focus' from somewhat important things .... such as hardware that doesn't overheat and require a return to the vendor.)

 » Movie Store

I'm not too interested in a movie store until internet speeds increase a lot. At the moment, it would take me days to download several gigabytes and there is always the possibility that it would get an error and I would have to start it over again. Also I don't want to constantly stop the download to have some online gaming or if able to download at the same time, I don't want it to hamper my online gaming connection.

 » Its simple

From what I understand, Sony allowed for developers to write functions to access their messages in game, from day one, but no developers actually used it.

Now they are adding in game messaging as a general system feature.

Why has it taken so long? Its no easy feat. Whatever game you happen to be running is already using up all the RAM that the XMB would normally use. Sony only reserves a small portion for the system, not nearly enough to run the XMB too.

For them to include this they would have had to do a lot of work.

Also, Sony isnt just one person at a PC making software, they have many different teams, so developing other software and addititons to the XMB/PSN doesnt mean that less time is spent on other things like im game messaging.

Also, I could care less about in game messaging, and enjoy all of the other additions.

 » lets see

Lets see if sony finally follows through with something they say, I want in-game XMB. Why dosent sony simply just release stuff on time. instead of telling us 7 months in advance, then delaying it 5 more months before releasing it

   Re: damonous - 2008-05-20
 » Finally?

Finally? ...I think the record is longer, but let's see if I can recall just SOME of the things they promised with the PS3... a) Remote Play to the PSP to access PS3 files from anywhere with a WiFi connection. b) Upscaling of DVD's to 1080p via HDMI. c) User-updated backgrounds + Themes. d) Upscaling for PS2 games (20/60/80gb models). e) music-CD audio-upscaling via HDMI. f) Background downloads/multi-tasking. g) DTS HD-MA lossless audio decoding via HDMI. h) Blu-ray movie version 1.1 and 2.0 support. ......Enough, yet? --How many times have you seen a CE manufacturer promise this much for their product and keep delivering?

 » in-game xmb

while listening to music you can go to xmb.while playing a game you cannot. same thing. no? doesn't make sense to have one and not the other.

   Re: Darkthunder90 - 2008-05-20
 » Yeah

I thought that too, but apparently it only allows In-game messaging.
   by Geosondaman - 2008-05-20
 » Don't you people understand

The XMB requires some amounts of RAM when it is running, playing music doesn't take up much RAM as the PS3 is literally just streaming the data from the disc, it doesn't really store much in the RAM to be read later. Whereas for a game, tons and tons of data are being stored for a short amount of time in the RAM in order to be read later, this leaves little room for the XMB to use so in-game XMB would be a little difficult to implement. One thing they can do is to downsize the XMB so that leaves more room for the game.
