Need For Speed Series - Image 1The recession may have hooked its pincers into another victim. A report from the Electronic Playground is claiming that Electronic Arts has canceled the Need for Speed series.

While we wait for official confirmation on this one, we're still tagging it as a rumor. The Electronic Playground offered no proof to its claim, but it's not what I'd call unbelievable.

Need for Speed: Undercover (PS3, Xbox 360DS, Wii, PSP), the latest in the series, wasn't even able to enter the top 20 in the NPD charts for November. Electronic Arts is also suffering some financial troubles, and there are talks that we may see some layoffs from the studio soon. We'll keep you posted when (and if) confirmation comes in.

 » NOOOOOO

It's because they make crappy games in the series. I LOVED NFS Undercover, I really did. Most Wanted was great too! Then they revamped the customization and all that and gave your car points for winning? Ew. And Undercover wasn't challenging, it didn't let you roam around.. Sell the series I say. Don't just cancel it. Or even open up a website asking what we'd like to see in a future NFS title, and don't just throw them away! STOP PUSHING FOR YEARLY TITLES AND GIVE US A GOOD GAME OF WHAT GAMERS USED TO LOVE IN NFS.

Relax, theres tons of other racing games out there from real companies. For example, Gran, RidgeRacer, etc.

It's "Electric Playground".

Aka the best video game show ever. F*** that XPlay crap - EP has had it beat since day one.

All I can say is good. Shelve this broken shell of a game till you know what to do with it.

Well, EA rushes out one Need for Speed after another. Every new one was worse than the one before.
Undercover had some extreme performance issues. On PS3 even the cutscenes had framerate issues (they are not even realtime).
The best version of undercover is ironically the on for PS2 (yes, two).

 » Yup

We see a NFS game atleast once a year and they always suck. There hasn't been a good one since NFS Hot Pursuit 2.

I think they pretty much deserve it. They also used the tactic to split up the team so that one team would create one and another would create another. Saying it as in "to have more time to make them," but in my opinion, it's to get the series pushed out more quickly, as if the series wasn't already a rush job as it is.

Undercover looked so awesome though. Had potential. Thanks EA. Great going for ruining a series that started off amazing.

the game completely sucked on PSP. i was so disappointed.

 » true

after playing MC:LA Remix for weeks before NFS undercover came out, it finally came out, i got, it sucked balls, and i was pissed. it was the same old psp nfs BS! pick a race from a list and race. how fun. i think pro street was better, but none of them compare to midnight club la remix! if they can implement cruise mode, so can nfs! get with the program already!

   Re: Stinky_1 - 2008-12-13
 » ....

deff agree on the LA remix statement!! I was playing remix a LOT just before undercover came out. Undercover was SOOO much more primitive than remix. They beat ea up on every single aspect. Free roaming was cool, the customization was done better. Also there was no limitation to what upgrades you could do. usually as soon as you had the money you had to decide WHICH upgrade you wanted to do. in NFS you were not allowed to upgrade anything until a certain point. By then you had enough money to do ALL the upgrades since they were all unlocked at the same time.

I played Undercover for maybe 1 hour, then went back to LA REMIX and have not gone back. Now that I have beat remix I may have to give NFS another shot. Mostly because there are no other "good" games for psp right now

Maybe... because they're gay?

I liked some of the NFS Games.

Underground 2 was and is my favorite. It had everything I wanted in an arcade style racing game. It had a lot of customization, stuff that only appeared in the series once, like hydraulics and speakers in the trunk, strobe lights in the hood, lambo doors, colored smoke, etc. Once they left the whole import race scene, it just went downhill from there

 » NFSU2

i agree!!! EA has ruined the nfs series by thinking ppl want a boring track racing. not for me thanks. i still play nfsu2 on the PC bcos it was the best and cos of EA *****ing every game up after nfsu2 ive lost faith in the company!

I don't think it's the recession but more that the sales have been dropping with every release and they're probably barely cutting even now (if even making it even)

 » Screw That

NFS was the only racing series I still enjoyed. Forza, PGR and GT are all too realistic for me. I hated ProStreet with a passion. Carbon was garbage.

But Underground 1+2, Most Wanted and Undercover were wicked.

NFS is what I know EA for. They better not touch it.

 » ugh...

The last need for speed I've played was Most wanted on the psp and that was with utter disappointment.

I think NFS III: hot pursuit was the best of the series, I played that game on the pc with a keyboard that's how much it rocked! XD

 » HALLELUJAH!

There IS a God!

......everybody knows that these games have been sucking for the longest time now. I hope that the demise of this series will spawn a genesis of GOOD games that will now release.

 » Well...

Last NFS that I found enjoyable was Hot Pursuit 2 and. Underground and Most Wanted were cool but after that, not so much.

   by jgr9 - 2008-12-13
 » Oh Noes!

Need for Speed: HP2 FTW! I would love to see another one like that that doesn't suck.

I liked underground as well, but not in the same way for obvious reasons.

   by locobrown - 2008-12-13
 » RIP forever NFS.

NFS Underground 1, 2 and Most Wanted were the three best racing titles ever. It has everything we could ever hope for in terms of car customization, music, and race tracks. All the other releases after theses where just a cry for help and a means to produce revenue from NFS fans from the previous accomplished success of the 3 titles that I have mentioned. When are we going to play a free-roam NFS on PSP? It seems that will never happen. Most Wanted was the most deserving of a "free-roam" considering the DATA size of the game. The remaining 1.6GB could have been plenty for EA to implement free-roam, but as always the lack of a second analog stick might be the reason why all NFS on PSP do not have free-roam mode.

 » ...and?

If this is true, it won't bring a tear to my eye. Since NFS:Underground, the NFS series could might as well have been called EA's Pimp My Ride.
Flatout, Burnout, Ridge Racer, Midnight Club, etc., they're ALL better than this subpar series.

well my question is why, i hate EA too, its because they tried to mess with GTA 4 when it was perfect... now this crap!!!

   by Edemir - 2008-12-14
 » bye bye

Seriously I am not surprised if that's true.

Actually EA NFS TUNNING and everything car games are getting boring. the same idea the same concept they carry for all these years. Year after Year. Game after game. Focusing on Features and little details but not on good gameplay and fun. Sorry EA we do no need anymore if things keep that way.

 » the last good NFS

was Hot Pursuit 2. That game took all the best parts of the series and combined them into one. If that game had online I'd play it to this day.

But noo, they introduce this garbage street racing culture BS. That's what killed the series.

   Re: jgr9 - 2008-12-15
 » Agreed

Yes, bring back Hot Pursuit!

   Re: Dawnfall - 2008-12-15
 » Nah

The best one was U2. Yea it doesn't have cops and damage system but it had free roaming. Combine U2 and HP2 and you'll get the perfect NFS game. But nooo, EA decide to be stupid and make crappy games...
