For those of us watching the Sony PlayStation 3 homebrew scene like a hawk, here's some video footage for you to nibble on. Yes, it's video footage of the alleged TIFF exploit discovered by Team ICE, with their ELF 2 SELF tool in action. Suffice to say, this is some very convincing evidence - but as with all ambitious projects like these, until we get further confirmation or more proof, we'll have to file this under rumors for now.

Watching the video, there's definitely room for this to be legitimate - the player manning the controls seems to have selected a particular file that takes quite a good while to load. The screen then goes all black, and the "Hello World" message is shown quite prominently on the top left corner of the screen, for all the world to see.

Again, rumors, but we hope it's true. Imagine the homebrew potential!

Thanks to someone for the tip!

UPDATE:

The ever-vigilant FreePlay appears to have debunked the PS3 video as false. You can find a copy of his post explaining the issue in our forums below, and you can access the full discussion by clicking on the "PS3 Hello World Legit?" link on the upper right portion of the page.

So damn fake unless released.

   Re: Canis Lupus - 2008-02-06
 » Indeed

tiff isn't just for hacking...it is an image file after all, so it could be just a delayed loading of the image.

FreePlay Says Everything Fake So Dont Count On It QJ..

But when an image loads on the PS3 it does a sort of "Transition" effect u know what i mean. On this video, the screen flicks to black, then it goes a different shade of black when it says hello world.

 » Surely fake

If it would be real, it would have been discovered by team ICE first I'd say, and more than that, the video is UGLY, and you can't find anything of that (proof, infos) online, so it's totally fake.

Not that we won't see see this soon, I'd say this month it's gonna pop, yes, but this one is fake, it smells, lol.

And I suppose the first ps3 CFW will be released on April 1, huh? I don't doubt that it's possible but I'd have to see it to believe it. You really think these uber haxors would have such a crappy, outdated cam?

April fools!

 » Fake.

It's just a large, high-res image that takes a long time to load.

Example of the same sort of thing on a 360:

» im not one to jump on things

but it looks very real, it's not him just showing a large image that takes a long time to load, cuase there is no help popup in the lower right corner. it could be a edited video playing on the PS3 from the start, or him playing it on an older firmware that didn't have the mesages that pop up

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-02-06

The help popup doesn't appear on every firmware. It's blatantly fake.
   by lansingone - 2008-02-06
 » wait look

at 0.28 you can see a popup message, so this is a firmware that has the messages, but still no message when the hello world message comes up. this could just be a video edited and played on a PS3

it takes so long because it has to "OVERFLOW" a certain buffer, a buffer loads files. DUH when it gets overflown then you can redirect it to run other code. namely homebrew. this looks real to me. as being someone who uses homebrew on four of his psps I think I would know a bit better than you folk if it was fake or not. I call REAL and homebrew to follow within the month. Cheers to Team Ice.

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-02-06
 » You're an idiot.

Buffer overflows do not take time. They happen instantaneously.

   Re: Hawkins2k4 - 2008-02-07
 » You're also a NOOB

My respects to Team ICE and to QJ.net, they are both great factions in the homebrew community, but they seem to have attracted a lot of dumbasses over the whole homebrew for PS3 scene. So much so that I felt the need to register and post on these matters, despite the fact that I like to remain hidden on forums.

I'd like to start by saying, just because you use homebrew on 4 psp's doesn't mean you know anything, so you download a few files off qj and install them on your psp, good for you... do you even know what a buffer overflow is?

To start with this vid is a fake, ICE released their stuff because they feel they have hit a dead end as far as their skills go, they are not experienced enough with the PS3, they have already said this.

Anyways, in response to a number of other posts as well, I would just like to say that the reason nobody else in the community has released any of their work is so as not to tip off Sony. We do share our work, but through more private channels than QJ.net. If you want in I suggest you at least learn C++ extensively. I can tell you that it could be plausible for the "Hello World" to take a little while to load if it were real, but from what I can see it is not real. The way the screen responds is the giveaway, and thats all I'm going to say about that.

Keep an open mind, I have looked over this "exploit" and Team ICE's work, and have decided to take another crack at the PS3 through their tool release, as have some friends of mine, but with no success.

I suggest people stop making fakes and others keep an open mind, it is inevitable that the PS3 will be hacked, time is the only factor.

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-02-07
» You've looked over their release, eh?

Not too closely, obviously. They stole it from Tavis Ormandy, a Unix security programmer.

   Re: Hawkins2k4 - 2008-02-07
 » Stolen from Travis Ormandy...

Hardly stolen, its a well known hack that has been used with success on other platforms, but is also patchable. Yes ICE's work is almost a complete carbon copy of older work, but that does not leave rule out the possibility of a possible exploit coming from this. I don't believe any will because I feel Sony has covered their bases squarely in the department of exploits-of-old if you will, and I think it will take something new and creative to break the PS3.

That said I also want people to keep an open mind and stop lipping off about the community, as it drives many would be hackers to the point where they just don't care, it happens a lot in the PSP community for instance, where people exalt DAX but other people who also work hard get no recognition, and all DAX and M33 get are flames when they say they aren't going to release immediately...

It is this attitude that creates more of a community issue than any other. All I was saying is that if an exploit could be found, what would the point be in making a release publicly until we actually had code for people to use. Why would somebody release an exploit to a guy who "runs homebrew on 4 of his psp's"... because that comment proves he knows nothing about homebrew or what it takes to make a cfw.

There is a big step from an exploit to a custom firmware, I personally hope the good people at sony open the PS3 to bedroom devs before somebody cracks it, because if somebody cracks it an ISO loader will be on the way, and that is the real reason bozo's like Mr. 4PSP's log onto Qj.net every 5 minutes to check for CFW's.

All I ever said was that people who just download and install hacks and cfw's need to keep an open mind and not mouth off about things they don't understand, like the amount of time it takes to overflow a buffer, or the legitimacy of a claim by the idiots above who made that vid. Anyways, in reality a buffer overflow could take hours to fully run its course if there was a chimp writing the code.

Clean code will be the key to cracking the PS3, and as ICE has already said, people have to know what codes to make. All Ice did was take bits and pieces of other peoples work and make them run with the PS3, other hackers have tried tiff exploits on the PS3, but Team ICE's is the most promising so far, and still a long way off, both from an actual exploit and running unsigned code. I am not a security specialist, I am a programmer, and all I said is that I wanted to take a second crack at it through this method, and got nothing. Now thats all said, there are other teams than ICE out there too, and all of them are working on their own little specialties. So there is no need to go trashing other peoples work, until you have your own.

 » Dear Qj

Over the years of Qj viewing i have noticed a problem. There is just to much homebrew news and not enough real news. I dislike homebrew alot and i would like you to do something about it. My idea is that every section of Qj such as PSP PS3 and Xbox360 have two sections such as official news and homebrew related news. Many would say who cares if u dont like it skip it but that is where there is another problem. The PSP section used to be fun with exciting news but now its just filled with homebrew. When i want to get to a real article i would have to go to the next paje because there is homebrew news constantly coming in. I think it would be wise Qj if you would look into this.

What i would like to do is have a pole or petition to make this happen. I dont have a clue how to do any of this and was hopeing that someone could create a website for this or something. I would like to spread the word about this idea and was wishing that you Qj could make an article about this problem.

 » Agree 100%

It's funny because homebrew on the PSP initially seemed so appealing to me. Maybe because I had hoped that the PSP could be the superior answer to a PocketPC. I followed that scene for quite a while ...then just got tired of downgrading and upgrading just to play Doom and then play the latest actual game release. But, whereas I had had some interest in homebrew on the PSP, I actually have little to no interest in homebrew on the PS3. I agree with Turismo20 that I like coming to QJ for NEWS on the PS3 (not news on homebrew).

give me a reason to hate homebrew. they're just apps

QJ has always been about homebrew, go somewhere else if you want PS3 news that isnt about homebrew.

 » aw geeze

can we stop with the ps3 homebrew thing. it was cool on the psp for free games and emulation but its just silly for a ps3. im not taking any chances on breaking my expensive console so i can do things that are easier on the pc located 3 feet away. lets focus on firmware updates that make the system more fun rather than constant system security updates. i want in game XMB this year not next decade.
