Yeah, we all booed when Sony decided to take out PS2 backwards compatibility in the later models of the PlayStation 3, but what's this? According to a product description from VideoGameCentral, Sony has a PS2 emulator for the PS3 available online. Buh? According to the production description: The new 80-Gig PS3 System features the ability to play PS3 Games, Blu-rays & DVD movies (PS2 Games can be played when downloading Sony’s PS2 emulator software online). This feels more like a case of miscommunication rather than an accidental slip-up though. Still, with hype for Firmware update 2.5 building up, this kind of thing can't be let past that easily. Will Sony actually be offering a PlayStation 2 emulator for the PS3? Have they heard the cry of thousands of PS3 owners? Put it on your wish list. For now though, let's chalk it up as rumor. Being the owner of a UK 60gb iv always been able to play PS2 games on my PS3.
The only problem is the PS3 sucks balls at playing ps2 games.
Theres a list of games that run smoothly and pefectly with all the upscaling lark, but i havent found one game that looks better on my PS3 than on my PS2 on a SDTV. I found actually switching my PS3 to a SD resolution instead of 720p displayed the games much better, still not great but better.
Unless Sony can make an emulator that actually looks somewhat playable, i cant see it getting much use.
Sure everyone wil try it, maybe even reply one of their favourite classics, but you'll soon get bored of glitchy graphics and inconsistent framerates.

» 720p on SD TV? lol
There's your first mistake and you probably have your settings all wrong for your TV. They look great to me on my XBR2 through HDMI so must be your hardware or settings.

Can you even read kid? What darkjonny said was play PS2 games on PS3 with a 720p TV is worst then a PS2 on a SDTV. Then he mentioned a PS2 on a SDTV has much better quality. Then switching the PS3 TV to SDTV it was better then 720p but wasn't better then PS2 with SDTV.

Now your just putting words in his mouth and regardless it's still his hardware and/or settings as my nephews run their PS3 on an SD TV and PS2 games also look great. And I also did about a year or more ago.

» The UK 60GB
The UK 60GB doesn't have full backwards compatibility like the US 60GB or US 20GB.
Instead it has the software emulation found in the MGS4 80 GB.

» its obvious...
Of Course the PS2 games look worse.... They were not made for HD resolution. They look good on an SDTV because you are playing then on an interlaced display and graphics are being displayed as they are meant to be displayed, i.e. the resolution is blurry and giving the illusion of a better picture quality because of interlacing.
On an HD display, first of all there is no interlacing. It's progressive scan so all those nooks and crannies in the games become crystal clear and since the graphics were never meant for an HD display, the bigger and more crisp they are, the worse they look.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way the PS3 plays PS2 games. It's the graphics of the games themselves. They were never meant to be stretched into widescreen format and played on a progressive scan TV.....because they're NOT HD!
It's simple.

PS3 emulation of PS2 games is horrible.
>Esaar - No you are wrong. 1) To start, you can change from progessive scan to interlaced on a HDTVs. 1080i (i is for Interlaced) 1080p (p is for Progressive Scan). 2) Also, there are a number of PS2 games with built in support for HDTVs. (Gran Turismo for example) 3) The PS3 has a smoothing setting which is for addressing the technical issue you addressed. 4) Finally, the PS3 emmulation has numerous problems. See the sony wesbite and search for a game. They are addressing the problem game by game with each software update, however Sony has stated that they are going to focus on future games not trying to fix old ones. The problems in the games vary from graphic glitches in parts of the game, lagging (slowing down) of gameplay (it looks like you are playing in slowmo), and sometimes a game may even freeze up. PS3 emulation is far from perfect.

This rumor is so old like the PS3 40GB version itself.
I doubt that they release an emulator, and if they do it, it will only work for certain games. Something like "patching" the PS2 games you insert.

The US release of the 60 GB and 20 GB has complete backwards compatibility. The 80 gig from the MGS4 bundle and prior has software emulation meaning games get better with firmware updates. The UK 60GB is the same as the US MGS4 80 gig.

That attitude will get you nowhere. Besides, time is money, and remember that you've had a PS3 much longer than new customers will meaning you're better off.

» I think its a misunderstanding.
I think this "emulator" that they are talking about is the PS2 System Data that you can find in the Playstation Store. Besides the 80GB doesn't need an emulator, IT CAN ALREADY PLAY PS2 GAMES.

I think its a misunderstanding: The NEW 80 gb model does not read PS2 games. It is the 40 gb model, with a bigger HDD. lol and moreover, the 80 gb PS3 that has backward compatibility is now discontinued.

» PS2 System Data is not an emulator
The PS2 System Data on the PlayStation Store is not an emulator, it is for BC capable PS3 systems, and it's used to allow PS2 games to have access to the HDD.

» I don't see how it's impossible.
How do you suppose they got a PS1 emulator on PSP even? Nothing is impossible when it comes to emulators...well almost anyway. It's not like the PS3 can't handle it or anything. Of course it wouldn't offer full BC with every single game ever made, but it'd still be there.

Emulation requires hardware more powerful then the hardware being emulated. The PSP is way more powerful then the old PSX. I think more or less is we should be evaluating how much more powerful is the PS3 compared to the PS2 and would it be enough to emulate the PS2 at 100% speed. Remember the older 80 gig units only software emulated the EE and had the rest hardware.

And this is the PS3 we're talking about. If they can have PS2 emulators running on low-range PCs, then they can do it on PS3 without a doubt.

The PSX emulation on the PSP was made by Sony, the employees have access to information about the PSX that homebrew coders don't. It's like an app being closed source.
That's why it ran so well, and emu's for say, the N64 on PSP are still not perfect.
For Sony to make an emulator that ran PS2 games on all PS3's is far from impossible; in fact, it's very possible.
Not money, just time and work is all that's needed.
Example, look the N64 VC titles on the Wii. It can emulate (yes emulate, it's an emulator more or less) Ocarina Of Time perfect; however, Wii64, the homebrew emulator has extreme difficulties; it's down the fact that Nintendo has access to console information that homebrew coders would die for.
Hope that sheds a little light :)

the ps3 browser IS a fully functional browser, BUT most java apps/flash apps wont recognise the ps3's java/flash player, and then "block" it.

» 1080i unsexy?
720p is weak sauce na2rul. any TV below 40 inches that is 1080i, the human eye can't detect. Go *****ing google it.
I've been using my 32 inch 1080i since '05. so my friend get's a new 1080p, and says my TV is trash. Look it up, 1080p is the best, but it really only has a better refresh rate than 1080i.
Now, scientists say, if your 1080i is over 40 inches, you are screwed, and I say, 720p doesn't suck, it's pixels are 1290 x 720, where as 1920 x 1080 is the same to the human eye under 40 inches

Not sure how i set u on fire. I dont need to f***@~#%***¬+# google since i know. Thanks for proving urself wrong tho that 1080i is worthless for smaller screens.
I didnt F@###'**+%$@#*^^ say 720p is better than 1080p u gay. I KNOW 1080p is the best. 1080p is def a bonus, i tried on my downstairs 40" TV.
i said 720p is better than 1080i for those small tvs. The refresh rate makes a big difference on both PS3 and 360 games framerate(except halo3). Smoothness is much more important than a bunch of dots.
GT5P replays are almost like 20fps in 1080i.
Trust me, u havent got a clue how bad INTERLACE is do you by the sound of ur tone.
