PS3And then there were three.

On our last count, there were two versions of the PS3 on the market - the 20 GB and the 60 GB models. And if the info we're getting here is right, there's a third brother in the works, dubbed the "media-centric" variant.

This version, which has yet to be verified, isn't going to be packaged as a gaming platform like the former two, but will instead be featured as a video entertainment system. In line with the "mod" to the system, this third variant will carry these features:

  • Anti-vibration mechanism for the Blu-ray disc drive.
  • 512MB XDR memory.
  • Advanced power supply unit.
  • Two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data.
Aside from the new parts, it will also be featuring a new look to ensure it is identified as a video player. It will still play PS3 games, though (phew). This new model is supposedly to be shipped directly under the Sony logo instead of following under the SCEI brand - further distancing it from the previous two. It's going to cost some too - the site reports that the estimated price for this new bundle is $ 2,500.

Given the level of comparisons that's been pitted between the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats, we're hoping this won't be the only future player out there with Blu-Ray capability - 2.5k is a painful price to pay. On the other hand, with that sort of money being shelled out, we're imagining what sort of goodies could be waiting in Sony's monster console. Keep your eyes peeled for updates.

felt like it happened already on the old ps2, psx released in japan for 3x the price of normal ps2 but the latter ps2 turned x has everything included. the psx is the first to use the XMB (of psp and ps3). the psx has over 200gb of HD space and copy dvd movies directly to HD. also has DVD record function, video editing, ethernet for internet and lots of extras. this is the mother of PSP and PS3... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_%28DVR%29

512MB XDR memory, is what they should have put in the two other consoles too

However I hope this one doesn't suffer the same fate as the PSX (psx is not the ps1)

I'm calling fake on this one. Simply because using two HDMI ports to seperate audio and video is just stupid. Since HDMI carries video and audio anyway, theres no need to seperate them.

i ono man, mayb its for dual output; like for 2 t.v's......but thats just stupid...well i like MS better because they dont put out useless/expensive products like Sony. This wud b "cheating" because if im on a normal ps3 and someone else im playin against is on one of these, i could suffer from framerate drop....and the kan kill me

I hadn't thought of it before, but having to HDMI is a great idea. You want to split them if you want Video to your TV and Audio to your stereo.
Mind you - neither my TV or Stereo currently support HDMI!

 » surely a fake

if this happens, i'll sell the ps3 i preordered in march and will NEVER buy any sony products ever. sony is disappointing everyone every year so much. i prefer microsoft but i'm a performance freak and i want 2 have the best so i can't buy every 2 months the same $]-[it in different versions. my next next-gen console will be by microsoft. i think the 360 will top the ps3 cause of it's exclusive rights but now i'm going with sony.
BUY WHAT YOU WANT AND NOT WHAT THE OTHERS WANT U 2 BUY!

 » worth it

If it still plays ps3 games and has all the normal ps3 features but has 512XDR with 256GDDR3 and has a better BD drive with more features then i would have no problem paying 2500 for it. considering a basic blueray player is between 1000-1300 and the ps3 already has a better quality player with true dolby surround sound not to mention all the other features and capabilities 2500 is cheap. all sony has to do now is make it come pre-installed with YDL and give it full access to cell and RSX as well as a full java enabled browser so u can download and play online MMORPG's and i would buy one for sure.

you have to be *****in retarded to buy a 2500 dollar ps3....especially if it only has just that crap tacked on. If they were to do this they might as well just sell the company to a damn homeless guy....sony+screwed. end of story.

» omg smalled brained fan boys

Its not a 2500 ps3 noobs they've said that, its an advanced blue ray player, that has ps3 capability's, stop thinking of it as a ps3 with ad ons. its a Blue ray with ad ons and last time i checked blue ray player cost's like $2000 and a ps3 cost like $599 add them together, doesn't take a genius to figure out its gonna cost, allot.

» I am a "smalled brained" fan boy

So how is this blu ray player more advanced than the PS3's? Wow check out that advanced power supply! Vibration resistant for a stationary player, cool that's useful. Yes! More memory for... uh... for.... stuff. You all should buy one right away. What a value...

It's fake ,

Because the two known kinds of PS3 contains 265 XDR memory , So that's means the developers are programming their games under 256XDR system.

so what is the benefit that will make the third kind contains 512XDR ?! beside not all ppl will buy the new kind . Even that it will be a special games that's supports 512XDR and this doesn't make since !

 » Nice

They have fixed the problem with Linux with it not using the whole count on memory with this Linux can run much smoother on the console so editing things should be simplier if you like to use the Linux platform.

The Games and things probally won't reconize the extra 256 MB of memory, if they do though they might run little smoother is all.

I highly doubt it will cost $2500 bucks. I believe it will cost about $800-$900 maybe $1000 bucks if they expect many consumers to buy it in the US not everyone has a job that goes above the poverty line. Thank the democrats for a possible raise to minimum wage. I hope it does come, but without the raise of everything elses cost which usually happens when they raise the damn thing.

 » Sony's corporate meeting

The Playstation 3 isn't selling well due to it's high pricing and low software support. Let's introduce a new PS3 to combat these issues. First it needs to cost FIVE times what the poor selling PS3 does, despite not doing anything extra. Then we will take away the game playing feature to eliminate the problem with poor software support. Way to go $ony! Take those rich retards for everything they're worth! Screw making products for the working poor! God I hate $ony.

I do agree the ps3 is way overpriced and I also own a wii (xmas gift) and a 360(had it for a stinkin' year), but you cats must be high as he[[ to think that the ps3 will not be the eventual leader in the next gen war. Go back to sleep, dumb- asses!

ps3 is gonna be leading in the next gen war followed by wii...f*ck 360. ya ps3 is a little expensive but judgeing by teh gameplay(i hav one) and graphics people r gonna get one eventually. it takes time. wii is fun but lacks the next gen graphics...and f*ck 360

 » ***** 360

owned a 360 for 2 days, played with a few of the games, was a piece of crap and returned it. Luckily, when i returned it, walmart had 1 ps3 left and i got it. F*ck the cost, there is a reason why it is priced more expensive than the 360 and wii. ya it has a blu ray player built in but there is alot more too it than that. There is also a reason why it was chosen as the best console of 2006 beating out the 360 and wii.

» I heard this was fake

This is probably fake. It doesnt seem reasonable for a gamer to buy it and as for "video enthusiasts" it doesnt make much sense either as almost any computer can do the same thing if you throw a blu-ray player in. The cost would be too high. Sony has not been doing well and their UMD sales arent doing well either. Hd dvd is also selling better so even if hd dvd doesn't "win" it doesnt mean that a blu-ray only player would be worth the purchase for a media machine. hd dvd/blu-ray players are already being made its just waiting till they are affordable now. If this were real sony I would say sonys even more foolish than i originally thought.

The extra memory, whether or not it is able to be used in gaming - will never be developed for. No company out there would be dumb enought to release a game that would only be playable on a very small based product like this.

ahah you 360 owners are pretty stupid you think xbox 360's so cheap ha what about the extra harddrive you gotta buy just to keep up with sonys what about the extra dvd player you have to buy just to watch a dvd what about the online fee thats bull***** what about the wireless adapter for the internet. ha thats about 1150$ you stupid morons ps3 comes with all that and its cheaper and the consoles newer and future proof so 360 fans enjoy your 1 year headstart that dident mean nothing and in a couple months ps3 will surpass your console with flying colours so kneel down and kiss the rings *****
