Rumor: in-game XMB release before end of January? - Image 1Here's another rumor that you guys could probably wonder about: the release of the in-game PS3 XMB might be earlier than expected.

it would be remembered that even though Sony has announced that it will be officially releasing the in-game XMB this year, it didn't specify exactly when it will be out.

Now, what we were able to get our hands on were two things: the information that the in-game XMB will be out even before January ends and a screenshot that accompanied it.

If you take a closer look at the photo on the upper right, that's actually a screenshot of what appears to be an actual in-game XMB. But even with the picture, people have been releasing their doubtful thoughts as to its authenticity.

People commented that they weren't able to find fine details with regard to the picture. Some even said that Photoshop was used to edit it and make it look like an in-game XMB.

So far, that's the only thing we can tell. A rumor after all is still a rumor until proven otherwise. But who knows? We'll be keeping you posted with updates as they happen. Meanwhile, maybe you can help us decide if the photo above is legit or not by telling us your thoughts via the comment section below.

Thanks eclipze, Paul H, and Someone_PR for the tip!

*Update* Rumor debunked. Sony's just confirmed with CVG that the image of the in-game XMB is fake. Told to CVG: "The XMB images are fake. There are no firmware updates planned for January."

Thanks to commenters A_FF_Fan, Santhiel, and the rest for giving us a heads up!

» good but doesn't really matter to me

been doing pretty well with my PS3 for almost a year now without it... if they give it to us then thanks if not they i could live without it, been doing so for since aussie launch.

it's not a matter of gamer life and death unlike to some who are "WTF!!! NO IN GAME XMB!!!! F U SONY!!!!"... "PS3 IS CRAP!!!! I WANT TO HEAR MY TUNES WHEN I'M PLAYING!!!! I'M SELLING MY PS3!!!!"

people like these are not only overdramatic losers but should really get a life.

 » blah blah blah

Well I get you on the Music in-game thing. If I wanted music during gameplay I would put on some headphones. But the ability to send and recieve messages in-game should have been in there from the start.

   Re: VgSlag - 2008-01-15
 » Totally

The ability to see who's online and to be able to message those that are should have been in from day 1.

Maybe XBOX's sweet interface has spoiled me, but I really miss ingame messaging and whatnot when playing the PS3.

I rarely play my own music ingame though.

 » Sony Confirms Fake

"Sony has told CVG that yesterday's images of the high-anticipated in-game XMB we're indeed fake. "

 » definitely Photoshopped...

wow, sorry to say but that most DEFINITELY looks photoshopped. my reasons for this assumption are because the motion blur ghosting effect from the so called "camera" is too perfect, the lighting doesn't make much sense in the way it was developed, and the icon structure seems to be highly skeptical. I don't think would dedicate an entire icon to Assign Controller Ports.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-01-15
 » Well for the icons

They would want it to look more like the XMB so thats probably why they would put entire icons like that. And for the photoshop thing, I have another picture so idk. . . looks pretty real to me.

 » Proven fake

Sony already confirmed this is fake, here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=179515

 » Fake

These images are fake through and through, no one would release such a poor image if it was real. That blurring is an obvious cover up to desgise the crude 'xmb overlay' that has been made. It is confirmed a fake by Sony and PSU.com. I think the in game messaging will be introduced it is possible remember that 2006 vid. It will be released this yr though not till late and dont expect it to be a high profile one. Just messages i think maybe in game soundtrack.

Though i prefer the games music and to hear those footsteps approaching on cod4. Builds up such tension wondering if they will find u. Hard rock would deter from the atmosphere especially when silent hill 5 is released.

This should behere by the end of the yr ps3. If not now it never will. Come on Sony dont let us down. U are starting to get the hang of customer feedback. Though I understand Sony cant just throw things out of the box when we ask for it. It takes time and there alot of factors to consider.

I didn't think it was essential until I got a few extra friends after cod4 and they sent me a load of mesages whilst trying to play lol.

It will be interesting to see what features are there in the next few yrs and by the end of its 10 yr lifespan (or more) who knows what firmware we will be downloading.

 » On an additional note

This isnt the first time it a fake thing was posted remember that custom soundtrack pic.

 » Theyr'e real!

I don't care what sony or anyone else say, i still beleive they are true because im a *****

 » well..

I'm too think it was fake before was confirmed... but anyway the in game message will come with home I guess... just my opinion, thats why they said somewhere in 2008...

What makes me curious is that will not be and update in January... soo... what's up with the profile 2.0 in the Blu-Ray?
I was saying what we need the live thing but look at this link

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=827

I think that think with be hell cool. Maybe they just are working with the Blu Ray to PSP tranfer thing and will release it all together who knows. Because Saw 4 will have that feature and will come in late january...

 » I cant wait!

I just can't wait for this... I'm tired of quiting the game, just to send or reply to my friend's messages..

   by Naroon Kasui - 2008-01-15
 » lol

It's so obvious that it was fake. Good try with the Ghosting effect though.

We need in-game XMB for messaging and such. Why have to quit a game just to read/reply to messages?

 » Watch

When it finally IS implimented it'll look just like that.

» Online chat at any time

Well I say that we need in game XMB for 2 things, #1. in game messaging and #2. the ability to chat with friends in games that do not have an online chat feature like on the 360. Hey I love my PS3 WAY more than my 360 but talking to any one at any time is a really cool feature.

Like in Smack Down vs RAW there is no online chat for the PS3. My brother lives in Florida and I'm in Jersey so when we get a tag team match going we have to talk on the phone during the match as we formulate out strategies. It would be nice to talk to each other with our head phones hooked up to the PS3 is all im saying.

 » Yeah

I agree, hopefully it'll be there cause thats one of the biggest reasons I want it.

» Even if it's fake (for the pic), I hope it's gonna pop soon.

But I'd prefer Home that anything else right now, with kinds of acheivements (for games that already popped too I hope, like bladestorm and assassin's creed) and stuff. (I WANT my home, lol).

I hope we'll see Home & in-game XMB before this summer. Anyway, I'm reading my eyes off at the university so it's not like I'll make an home if it pop before, BUT, if it pops before, they'll mabe boost it till I finish my university session (end of april) and then I could use it non-stop! :D (Till I get a job.. darn! lol, always something)

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-01-17
 » Yea I know

We're all tired of being homeless, but it'll come in time. There releasing some info at GDC next month so hopefully it gets a release date by then.
