Sony's PlayStation 3 next-gen console - Image 1

More news has recently flown in from London, during the ongoing PlayStation Day event. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves was proud to announce the success of their PlayStation 3 next-gen console over their closest rival, Microsoft's Xbox 360.

The numbers Sony has compiled clearly show that the PS3 has already sold over five million units in the region and has been enjoying a lead over the Microsoft next-gen console since last October.

Despite the 18-month head start the Xbox 360 had over the PS3, Reeves was happy to announce that they were finally making considerable headway against their rival. UK sales alone have amounted to over one million units over the past month.

All of this supplements the 48 million unit sales already garnered from the PlayStation 2 as of the current date. The PlayStation Portable handheld also racked up some considerable numbers with its 12 million sales record to add to its name.

One of my good friends who has a 360 talked crap about the PS3 until he checked it out for himself. Now he won't quit bugging me to trade his 360 for my PS3. LOL!

yeah i believe you, no really i do. ;-)

did he also want to trade halo 3 for Lair, you know, the ps3 game you called one of the best games ever made? :-)

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2008-05-07
 » Actually

He owns all the Halo games and he said Halo 3 is ok but he's bored of it. Also yes he thinks LAIR is a badass game. I myself think it's way better than Halo 3.

What sony doesn't mention is the extremely painful attach rate for the ps3. The sad news is that many PS3 owners simply aren't using it to play games. I've convinced two friends (360 owners first mind you) to invest in the PS3, and both are yet to buy a game for it, instead opting to use it solely as a Blu-Ray player.... A common trend that one glance at the attach rate would inform you of.

 » same here...

most of my friend has a ps3 mainly for blu-ray. If a game comes out for both platforms they will buy the xbox one. But then the advantage Sony has it that once you get the system, eventually you will give in and buy games I guess...

 » On the other hand

Everyone kept on about the low attach rate before for Blu ray because people were buying the consoles for games and not for movies...until HDDVD was pulled - now you're saying it's the other way around?

   Re: Meseria - 2008-05-07
 » but the thing is...

Just like many ppl who bought a ps3 to play games (like myself) way back at launch are now finding themselves buying bluray's here and there. I own 3 blurays. I think it will also go the other way with people buying some games even if they bought it solely for bluray.

Even so, does it really matter the attach rate? Look at GTAIV's numbers for first week. Obviously a game can sell to millions if its controversial and lets you have sex with prostitutes and then kill them afterwards. I have to agree, there have not been but a handful of absoutely amazing games for ps3 so far and i think thats why the attachment rate is low. Especially for the people who bought it for movies because they would be even less inclined to buy an average game.

Sony have been in this game for along time and I have been a PSX fan from day one if the sales figures are true then its pretty good since there is not much advertising going on!!!! Microsoft dropping the price of the x-box again shows that the PS3 is starting to rule again like the PS1 & PS2 did with Sega. And look what happened to the Dreamcast and mega drive.
