Sony PlayStation 3 console - Image 1If you think you aren't getting the most out of your PlayStation 3's hard drive capacity, then you might be surprised to find out that even the higher ups in Sony believe the same thing.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) boss David Reeves admitted as much after a talk with Eurogamer regarding the 40GB PS3 unit. He hinted the possibility of introducing official external hard drives into the market as he explained several things regarding the current SKU being rolled out.

He mentioned that moving to the 40GB configuration was mostly due to lowering the price of the console for their consumers. However, he wasn't sure how long Sony will be keeping this current setup and opened the possibility of allowing gamers to choose from a wider variety in the future.

He was quoted having said this:

The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, or course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive.

It might be that we will offer the possibility for people to have a bigger hard drive, but they have that option now. But it does not mean that we have anything in the works to introduce a different model or bigger hard drive built in.

External hard drives can currently be plugged into the console's USB cable attachment, giving users an option to swap hard drives with the one inside the PS3. Reeves said that he wanted to keep things simple for now and stick to the cards they currently have on the table. Larger capacities will definitely be needed in the future when services like PlayTV becomes more commonplace for the PS3 user on the lookout for a larger multimedia library.

 » why?

It's not like I'm lacking space with 80g. I have tons of stuff on my ps3, tons of demos/videos/music/photos but this takes less than 25gig on my 80gigs... And all my TV shows and movies are coming from my PC's virtual server, so I'm using my BIG PC's Hard Disc instead, it's way better like that. I don't even have to transer stuff.

Anyway, it's only few people that want more, it's not like it's important... I just wannt play games, surf the net, see my photos and watch my movies/tv shows, and I can do that now. I could do al that with the 40gig model too so it's not like we need 500gig of something. Get a PC...

» Size matters. size always matters.

my 60GB if full, and im needing a bigger hard drive. as soon as i can get my hands on the Terabite hard drive its mine. £115 to £200 seems to be the price range right now. still need to check if ps3 will see all 1000GB of memory though. Movies music n PSeye videos hogging up my HDD i dont even have linux on my ps3 anymore for more space :( once i get 1000GB films i can hopefully record and watch more HD movies / videos.

 » never full

im no where near filling my ps3 and probably never will be

i never had more than 10 games for the ps2 or 3 games for the psp

and i dont watch movies or listen to music, so unless every game chunks out huge amounts of DLC, i doubt my 60gb will ever be full

although sony should still come out with one for the ones who want it

theres no point replacing the HDD, because then you out 60gb

Ofcourse their is. All the data you have now, you could transfer it to your external, then to your larger one---that way you have more space and your previous content
