SCEI - Image 1Following SCEE's recent announcement regarding lessened backwards compatibility for the European PS3, SCEE's Japanese parent SCEI has at last issued a statement on the matter. According to IGN, Impress Watch reports that SCEI has finally provided some clarification into exactly what components will be going under the European PS3's hood.

PS3 models available in Asia and North America include the "Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer" combination CPU and graphics chip that powers the slim model PS2. This chip allows these units to achieve backwards compatibility.

Apparently, the European version of the PS3 will not have this chip, and will instead rely on a combination of hardware and software. The Emotion Engine CPU functionality will be replicated entirely through software emulation, and Sony will put in hardware of some form that will take the place of the Graphics Synthesizer graphics chip.

That's pretty much all SCEI was willing to divulge regarding this issue. SCEI also didn't make any announcements on when the new version of the PS3 hardware will appear in other territories.

They were planing to do this along with all PS3's. Those chips were just a temporary solution.

It may have been originally planned but they have essentially taken something out of the PS3 making it worse while still leaving the Europeans paying more for the console.

Next they will be replacing the cell processor with a pineapple and telling you its eggs and bacon for an extra £50

I think eggs and bacon might actually be an improvement. its funny how they are scrambling to take things out to lower costs but the one thing that costs the most they cant remove.(BetamaxRay drive) Next they will release it without a case to make it lighter. Sony has always had terrible hardware with the psone and ps2. they eventuallly fixed most of the problems but architecture wise the ps1 had the most solid design. The ps2 looks like it was wired by a retarded monkey with a broken arm and missing an eye. The ps3 looks like it was designed by paris hilton with help from said monkey. But atleast the first 2 playstations werent price at twice that of the competition.

Blu Ray is not doing another BetaMax. It's outselling HD-DVD.

 » A little rejected

I'm just left feeling a little rejected after this news, we have to wait longer for the console and now we get less and have to pay more.

And what will most ps3 owners be doing once they've played their launch titles and are waiting for more games? They'll play their classic PS2 games (well i would at least) and now there's the chance that those wont work!

It's a stupid move by sony! And i bet their wondering why they're getting so much bad press lately!!

 » YOUR MOTHERS

i just canceled my ps3 pre order because i wasnt going to buy any games for ps3 since there arnt any good ones out. I was instead waiting to buy it so i can play god of war 2, final fantasy 12 and a few other ps2 games and wait for better games to come out, but now, im just going to buy a ps2 to play it. I have never been a sont fan, i have only ever had an xbox and 360, but i really like some of the games for the ps2 which is why i will be buying one, but now i dont even want to give sony my money, hence i am now going to buy a second hand ps2 and games. However, its a wait and see approach for most people, if sony can have a good range of ps2 games through emulation and upscale the graphics, we mite not have it so bad afterall. If sony can do god of war and others in 720p or 1080p, then i think we will be ok, i know sony said they want to keep ps2 games like they where meant to be played, but when has sony ever said anything that ends up being true.

Will the PS3s that lost all the sales demand being sold on ebay go up again with this news. People that were holding out might scramble again to get their hands on one without emulation.

» I'm glad $ony are taking chips out...

...if just mean people won't feel as bad when they're ripping the games and playing with the new iso loader.
Thanks $ony for convincing people to rip you off.

After reading these post I can't believe how much you people are over reacting.

As Braintrust said in the 1st post - Sony have been planning this for a while, it's no surprise.

Sony will be providing backwards compatability but it will be progressive, if you read the article it states "The Emotion Engine CPU functionality will be replicated entirely" now if this doesn't happen overnight it will happen within the next lot of firmware upgrades.

At the end of the day it really is not that much of a big deal, if you are buying PS3 you are buying it for it's next gen games and bluray surely? If backwards compatibility is such a big deal why not save your cash and get a PS2.

Don't get me wrong, I like backwards compatability and it will be there, but chances are no-one will be using it after they get their teeth into the true next-gen titles (how many times do you play PS1 games on your PS2 now?) and we'll all realise it's just not that important.

 » lol silly euro-monkeys

Obviously if Sony is replacing those two chip they know that their software emulation will be powerful enough to handle the ps2 tiltles. PS3 isn't some little child's toy it can overpower the ps2 quite easily and emulating it should be a laughing joke.. I mean come on the ps2 had liek what 32mb of ram? ps3 has 256*2 gddr3 ram which is not only 16 times more ram but also boasts a much fast clock speed. You guys are not getting ripped off in any ways what so ever... I'm pretty sure that most the non-working or not perfectly loading titles will be darker games which no one will give a rat ***** about. Games like Gow2, FF12 and such will work from the release of ps3 for sure otherwise it would be quite retarded, I'm pretty sure they're making it their priority that the last 3 years of ps2 game batches will be the most compatible at start and then slowly work towards 100% ratio. Thye did a great job on the small PSP so I am confident that they will replicate the quality x10 on the ps3 for ps2 emulation. Now quit winning little *****es and go back to gaming... 3 years into ps3 launch from now no one will give a flying ***** about ps2 games especialy with ff13 coming, mgs4, lair and all those othe rmulti-million dillar big name games ;)
