Sam Fisher vs... Bill Gates? - Image 1

Sorry to stir things up a bit, but everyone and their pink prancing hippo probably already know that PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 side-by-side comparisons are a fact of life these days. Previously, we've had graphical comparisons of Armored Core, Elder Scrolls, and Virtua Tennis, and some time before that, comparisons of Tiger Woods and Tony Hawk.

Today, Sam Fisher's getting the same treatment, but this time around, as seen in pictures (instead of vids). From The Back Buffer (Blogspot), we got comparison shots of the PS3- and 360-versions of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Quite aptly so, we just might finally see the true meaning of his being a "double agent."

Now, now. Before you guys go at each other's throats, here's a very intelligent comment by Anonymous we found on the Blogspot post, saying that he/she won't decide on either an Xbox 360 or PS3 purchase based on these screenshots because of the following:
  1. are those screenshots captured directly from the system or from physical digital camera?
  2. are those screenshots from the same display output?
  3. I may question the game developer's capabilities of getting the most from both systems.
  4. I will decide my purchase based on screenshots from Gran Turismo for Xbox360 and PS3.
Opinions are opinions; everyone's entitled with their own. And as always, the main difference between both consoles is the lighting. Now, to make things fun, we'll make you guess which side of these shots are running on which platform. If you want to cheat just highlight the following censor bars: Xbox 360, right-hand side; PS3, left-hand side.

now, i love the ps3 but this is just appaulling

» Some serious denial here PS3 fans! 360 is better!

I have IGN insider access, I've download the high res movie comparison, and in every way, the 360 version is much better than the PS3 version (as yes, those screens ARE from the PS3 version).

Give whatever reasons you want, but the framerate is better on the 360, the colours are richer, the contrast is better, and the detail is higher. :|

 » nuh uh!

Yeah it's the XBOX 360 holding back the quality of these multiplatform games! There just isn't enough storage on a DVD9. lol

fanboy + retard + fantard

   Re: Gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
» ^^^Not very smart are you!

How could the 360 be holding back the quality when the 360 version is the superior version? And this is true for many multi-format games. The PS3 should at least match the 360, but for many games, this is not the case.

Last gen, the XBox was usually the best version for multi-format games. The GC and PS2 were less powerful, but that didn't hold it back because the XBox was capable of better textures, more polygons and better framerates.

Right from the beginning devs and gamers said there's not much difference between the 360 and PS3 in terms of power, and so far this is being shown to be true in multi-format games. If anything, the extra (and more flexible) available memory on the 360 and slightly more powerful GPU seems to be making the difference.

 » Wow what an idiot

You really are a PS3 fantard aren't you? How is the 360 version holding back anything when 1. It came out first and 2. Looks better than the PS3 version, which came out half a year later

   Re: Gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » ^^^ Hmmm

The character was changed in his post, I think he wrote fanboy plus retard equals fantard, hence the name.

So looking back, I think he's being sarcastic. :)

 » have you seen oblivion?

It's obvious that the PS3 has much more power behind it for textures. It looks like ubisoft just got lazy... or these screens really don't show off the true game.

   Re: Gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
» Yes I've seen Oblivion. It looks the SAME except..

... the shaders the programmers developed to improve the transition from background to foreground textures improves the graphics in this area, and the draw distance is slightly further too.

This has NOTHING to do with power, this is due to extra developement time, and the devs has said this a number of times when asked!

» Which system is really better

Fact is that when you port from 360 to PS3 you often have to cut geometry and reduce textures to fit within the limited asset memory of the ps3. Yes the PS3 has more cels, yes the ps3 is supposedly the more powerful system. But there are things about the PS3 that make it limited in comparison to the 360. PS3 is a system with 1 core that has many cells clocked in at 2.8ghz for the core overall. 360 is a multi-core system clocked in at 3.2ghz per core. PS3 has split memory divided in two 256MB chunks (this is what limits the amount of textures and geometry) 360 has 512 to use for whatever a dev wants. PS3 has a dedicated shader architecture(last gen tech) where as the 360 has unified shaders(next gen tech, just being implemented on the latest gfx cards). Overall the PS3 has a better design for a processing data and chrunching numbers, but the 360 has a better design for being a game machine.

   Re: Meglomaniac (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
» But it also has to be said

PS3 is tough to code for where as the 360 is much easier. devs can spend more time working on making a game look nice on the 360 during production. On the PS3 they have to spend more time coding workarounds to get the effects and game working on the PS3. There are often more bugs on ps3 version that have to be fixed as well. more coding to do a simple task means higher chance there will be issues later on. When pressured by publishers to release by a specific date the 360 version are almost always going to look bertter due to there being more time to make it look prettier. Publishers will often tell devs to cut corners to meet deadlines. I suspect a combination of the above points may be the case for this one. Besides it is still early in the PS3s life and the 360 still hasn't hit its peak. In 2 years lets see which system seems to have the better games.

 » wow

this is just ridiculous. the 360 looks amazing... except for the night vision which looks way better on the ps3. could be a few things; crappy/lazy port, not in hd, cell is just to alien to get used to. i am hoping for the sake of my future game library that it's just another one of ubi's crappy ports.

 » WTF

Have you seen the third pic... a part of his foot is missing!! That can't be real or ubisoft is the worst company making posts ever!

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-04-11
 » IGN says...

that there are parts of the game with snow falling, and it stops falling in only one of the upper corners of the screen....as well as lots of collision detection bugs (which seems to be present in alot of PS3 games)...

It's probably that the engine for Splinter Cell just is not made for cell....however Unreal engine 3 was probably alot better adapted for it....

PS3 Sucks
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

   by PS3 rules (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » ?????????

LOOK at the night vision pictures and you can see that on that one the ps3 has better texture! The problem is that the xbox360 version has better lighting! the ps3 version looks too dark! and the xbox has great lighting!

   Re: Gamer (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
» You really need to see the IGN movie.

The PS3 version appears to have better textures on the night vision pictures because of the way night vision is being implemented. With night vision off, the difference is as seen in that first picture at the start of this topic.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2007-04-11
 » Actually...

The reason the 360 nightvision looks "worse" is that they are using more shader effects to obscure the screen.....PS3 doesn't have as many pixel shaders as 360l, so they were not able to distort the screen as much...

For some reason people think brighter/clearer is better....but really, it's not, and is usually inidictive of a lesser system using fewer effects...

 » People, relax!

What i want to say is this. I only own a 360 and i have SPDA for it, and it looks incredible. I dont have a ps3, nor have I seen the ps3 version actually running on a tv screen. With that said, IF these ps3 screenshots are accurate, its a very bad port. Key word here is "PORT", just because this game looks bad on the ps3, it doesnt mean the ps3 sucks and is incapable of great graphics. Look at Oblivion, it looked better on ps3, but this game looks better on 360.

The point im trying to make is, both systems are powerful, both have their pro's and con's. Games like this dont prove one console is better than the other.

And the PS3 one appears to be worse unfortunately

The only thing they get from this, is lower salability for PS3, THATS ALL :)

 » hmm

Well if u think about it the night vision is awesome and ponely have to use it alot in this game so ps3 pwns the 360 in night vision and on 360 its so damn bright u dont evn need it and splinter cell is mostly about hiding in the dark therefore they win in ther own way but id buy ps3 one..

   Re: OneTooMany (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
 » All the reviews

say the 360 version is better in almost everyway possible! And we can see it's better in this comparison. The only reason I could see for anyone buying the PS3 version is because they only have a PS3 and not a 360.

 » w3tw1lly

omg the 360 rocked the ps3... ps3 = muddy textures and poor lighting

   by MetalBLACKFOX (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11
» why night vision look like crap on 360

i think the reason the night vision look worse on 360..is because the developers saw how we did not like the night vision mode in 360,so they made it look better for the ps3 port......(the night vision was intentionally made to look bad in the 360 for REALISM,,butt people didnt like it including me,,so in the port they fixed it)

   by grs (Unregistered) - 2007-04-11

Wow this has to be a joke the PS3 shots are just awful.

lol i love how some people are miss reading the article and saying the 360 is on the left and PS3 is on the right.

 » THen...

Just look at the screens and see for yourself...

Really the first one with the hostage sums it all up....360 just powns in lighting, textures and even facial animations....which PS3 has none of....

The guy on PS3 really doesn't look too bothered by the fact he is about to get his neck broken...maybe he figures Sams arm will clip through his neck due to shoddy collision detection, and he'll be alright....

haha

» It's hard to do that...

when the company that was touting the worlds most powerful gaming console, with "twice the power" of any other console and has the most expensive console....is getting beaten technically over and over by it's competitor...

Really now, if some kid kept bragging that he could jump a fence in one leap, and that you couldn't do it even with help....and then when he went to jump it, tripped up and fell flat on his face, while you soared over it easly.....wouldn't you feel the need to point fingers and say "I told you so" ?

 » Wow...

This games looks like something a walrus would regurgitate. Seriously i own a PS3 and have not played this game but man i'm going to have to rent it now to find out if these shot are true to word. If it is indeed true, then this has GOT to be the worst port EVER. The first shot looks like something you would expect off a PS2 readily giving me the impression this was made by someone who did not give a damn. Even if you are an Xbox fan you have to admit the PS3 is more than capable of making something that looks better than these atrocious shots. I'll be renting this over the weekend and if the shots prove right then i may just take a hot steamy dump in the case and return it as it may just be what the developers were going for.

im sorry but this is funny seeing how mad people can get over games. in how many months not even years will this matter to you. sorry but they're both games and both are better at different things. But i do agree that ps3 graphics aren't anywhere near that bad and i have a 360.

but seriously just relax
