PS3 Wal Mart scan - Image 1

A scan of a Wal-Mart spreadsheet has recently been posted by Joystiq. What's interesting about this one is that it shows the 40GB PlayStation 3 being listed as "will be replaced" in early  August of this year.

The spreadsheet was supposedly sent in by a Joystiq source who has tipped them off in the past. The origin of it, though, was never revealed.

While it's possible that a new SKU is in the works, this could also simply turn out to be something less drastic. The addition of the DualShock 3 as the staple controller or discreet changes in the hardware are also possibilities.

However, if the 40GB model does end up going down, it will be the third killed off following the 20GB and the 60GB versions. However, that seems unlikely because sales of the 40GB have been doing relatively better than those of its predecessors. Perhaps E3 of 2008 holds some answers.

 » C'mon SONY!

What the heck are you doing? First the 20GB goes, now the 60GB (complete with backwards compatible). Now you're telling us the 40GB will be going soon?

Do you know how much money you'll continue to loose if you keep dropping said SKU models. Or will be doing other acts? Seriously dude, you should stick with one model and go from there. Instead of bringing up various SKU models.

It's simple.

If a new model (like a 160gb or something) gets released and replaces the 40gb, then there will be a price drop.

E3 will tell us for sure, though.

relax man, I rather think they will just "add" the Dualshock 3 to the 40 GB set, but because the content of the package is changed, it needs a new SKU. Nothing more.

it could also be that these are cheaper models because of the 65 nm GPU.

About a month after PS3 sales double, so the interwebs gets clogged with pissed off PS3 owners expressing their hate for Sony

Oh Sony, how we love thee

Why would you actually need to buy the redesign anyway? Redesigns for systems never introduce anything that'll force you to buy them.

I'd only consider it if the redesign did my chores..and my taxes..and mowed the lawn.

AND ROCKETED ME INTO SPACE.

Silver-Tiger said exactly what I was thinking, Sony aren't dumbass' they can see that the 40GB model is doing well. I'd bet £5 its the addition of the Dualshock 3 controller.

The 40GB ps3 model is as cost-reduced as it can get for now and is doing well. They're just going to add the Dualshock 3 to the bundle because the other versions offer it.

The answer.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/21/ps3-to-get-smaller-cell-and-or-rsx-chips-in-august/

The last one is from april, which is old.

Anyway IBM is almost complete with the 45NM Cell Processor chip for the PS3.

http://ps3.thegamereviews.com/story-572-Bigger-is-Worse-Smaller-is-Faster-New-Cell-Processor-Chip.html

It is 155 days old but it is the most recent version of the cell topic.

Anyway if you understand Sony like a corporate person or stockholder, you would notice that Sony is trying to make the components smaller, less heat, cheaper to produce, so it doesnt cost them that much.

Oh yes I also know that there trying to find a cheaper way to make a Backwards compatibility PS3 for PS2/PS1 games, thats why they are putting in the 65NM RSX chip and soon the 45NM Cell Chip, once they are finished.

The smaller the chips, the smaller the casing, the cheaper it is for them to produce and thus the cheaper it is for you to buy and it will also be easier for them to make PS2 games BC to PS3 again.

You guys do not understand why they make slimmer versions of stuff, do you? its cause thats the only way to cut costs, thats a fact.

The smaller it is, the easier it is for Sony to cut costs.

PSP PHAT was pretty expensive for Sony to make and stores wanted the handheld to become cheaper or else it would be thrown out the window, they had to find a cheaper way to produce components for it. Thus the PSP SLIM was born. That cut costs in everything and even though Sony doesnt bring out Slimmer versions of its stuff till 5 years later, they had to cause of stores.

But this is a MAJOR ISSUE FOR SONY, they have to make a Slimmer PS3 as soon as possible because if not, they may lose even more money than they are now.

You know the PS3 casing, the thing that holds it together costs them money? Did you know that?

The case, the thing that makes it look so nice and shiny, that costs them alot of money aswell.

Anyway if you understood any of that, if Sony puts in the 65NM RSX chip and 45NM chip inside a smaller, more compact design, NOT LIKE THE T3 LOOKING THING THAT LOOKS LIKE A WII! Anyway if they put those 2 plus a laptop Blu Ray drive, and 160 gig hard drive as Gamestop said along time ago, then it wouldnt be that bad for Sony.

The Chips and drive are the major money issues but if they make them smaller, it makes them cheaper to produce. Oh yeah if they used the laptop Blu Ray drive, it would probably be cheaper.

Gamestop along time ago said that they were replacing the 40 gig PS3's in august with 160 gig PS3's with PS2 BC.

If you doubt me about slimmer PS3, then whatever, its your call but let me tell you the facts, it won't take Sony 2 years or 3 years for them to bring out the Slim PS3, they will probably release it at the end of this year or the beginning of next year by my calculations and research on the chips that they use.

Oh and lets just say yes PS3 SLIMs will indeed have PS2 BC, thats a fact, I already know.
