Analyst: The Year Of The PlayStation 3 Unofficially Delayed To 2009 - Image 1The PlayStation 3 had quite a good year this year - just, not quite as good as analysts thought.

Early this year, analysts kept hailing 2008 as the "Year of the PlayStation 3," especially after Sony won the format war with Blu-ray. Screen Digest, in particular, was all in for the idea.

Well, they changed their minds. Screen Digest analyst Piers Harding-Rolls now says that the Year of the PlayStation 3 got delayed:

We always felt that 2008 was the year that PS3 kicked off - but we think that will now be 2009. When we looked at the 360 at the beginning of the year we didn't think it was going to do as well as it has done.

Sounds like analysts either overestimated Sony, or they underestimated Microsoft. But then I'm sure a price cut would solve all of Sony's problems. It sure did for Microsoft.

 » price cuts?

Whoever wrote this article and the others mentioning it, needs to be quiet. Enough will all of it. I'm tired of always reading about wanting it. Enough with personal opinions, just state facts

 » Sony screwed up

On top of the literal one year headstart MS had, Sony pretty much gave them another 2 years to keep picking up steam by pricing the console too high, screwing up the marketing for pretty much every exclusive title, and not strategically dropping the price when MS did.

The PS3 isn't doomed, and because of its movie playing capabilities it never will be, but Sony is going to have a very tough time ever surpassing MS this gen

 » Please no fanboy sh*t

Forgot to add that I just bought a PS3 myself, got the 160GB version with Uncharted :) Great system. Shopping on eBay right now for more games

So please no stupid responses, I'm just stating facts. I like the console itself, but not the way Sony went about selling it. I don't care what it does, $600 at launch was wayyyy too much for a PlayStation. I got my 160GB on a special deal which dropped it t around $300, because even $400 is still too much for the 80GB version now that you can find BD players for $100-$150

It's not hard to see why this thing isn't selling well at all, Sony needs to drop the price again, because it's going to cost more if they don't

   Re: Esaar - 2008-12-27
 » yup

Myself a big Sony fan and love my PS3, but have to admit that I agree 100% with you. Sony got way too arrogant and overestimated their success based on the PS2 and now they're paying for it, and will keep paying for the rest of this gen probably.

 » YEA because

Sony always wanted to over price the ysem like that what an idiot if sony could price cut they would but thier backs against the wall right now with this price thing. Sony had the weekest system for 2 gens everyone wanted power now power has been delivered it has a price a price they lose on each consol sold.

Yea BD players are at 80 buck but they're P.O.S. long load time and some no internet connect that means no firmware updates. PS3 still the best BD player out there.

 » dude...

What do you mean Sony had the weakest system for 2 gens?

Wii and Gamecube were both much weaker than Sony's consoles, and the PS2 was, hands down, THE best console of last year. It doesn't matter what you say, PS2 will win over the original Xbox any day.

 » Here's a fact nobody talks about....

M$ is either incredibly smart, or Xbox users are incredibly dense. Some Simple math on something I haven't seen anybody touch on yet;

M$ has sold over 25 Million XBox 360 units since launch. Lets say only about half of those users pay for online access. That's 12.5M x $49.99, or over $624 MILLION a year that M$ is raking in for doing basically nothing it isn't already doing. So in effect, M$ is gouging ALL of its online subscribers. That isn't chump change by an stretch of the imagination.

That said, there is a bright side to the XBox; a larger library and THRIVING online community. The XBox Live experience is superior to Sony's PSN, but for hundreds of millions of dollars a year, IT DAMN WELL BETTER BE!!!!

I don't own an Xbox, but I see the value in it for people that have more time for gaming than I do. I'm a huge Tekken fan so the PS3 was a no brainer for me. However, since Tekken6 is coming out for both XBox & PS3, if I'm thinking logically which most fanboy idiots don't do, the better online experience is going to be on Xbox so I'm getting an Xbox.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PS3 and the games that I do have for it are phenomenal! I have to admit that I am not a fan of FPS games and anybody with half a brain can admit that there is an inordinately HIGH number of FPS on the Xbox... that is not to say there arent other games, but that did turn me off from the Xbox.

I'll stop my rant here before it gets too long, but the bottom line really is; If you're happy with your current console, then good for you, that is all that really matters. No need to go to bat for a company that in the end, only really cares about your money!

Huge missconception about online....

The only thing MS/360 does better for online is accesibility and chatting features. You can still pay $60 a year for laggy games. When it comes down to straight matchmaking, generally PS3/360 use the same mechanics....either a 360/Ps3 is designated the host of the match, or a designated server everyone connects to.....either way it is basically identicle.

The only diff is that it's easier to add people as friends, txt, and send voice msg's in XBL as opposed to PSN....

   Re: Link75e - 2008-12-28
 » its the same thing

If i remember all the good games on the ps3 are shooting games. MGS4+shooter, Resistance+shooter, Drakes fortune+shooter, and all the other games are ports. Now little big planet and ratchet and clank just get Banjo kasooi and Fable 2 and you should have fun.

so according to you, Gears2+ Drake's Fortune?

 » Using the "M$" + Stupid

Don't call them "M$." You sound so stupid when you do. And don't buy an Xbox 360 then!

They're a *gasp* business, not a charity! Besides, ANYONE would rather pay $50/yr for a FAR SUPERIOR online/marketplace experience with a 10 million+ community, than get the crappy PSN with a terriblly lame online community.

I know I'll get down-starred for simply speaking the truth, whereas a dumbass can say "omg M$ just wants money they are evil CEO corporation and should die" gets 5-starred.

Here's a heads-up guys:
Sony is OUT TO MAKE MONEY.
Nintendo is OUT TO MAKE MONEY.
Microsoft is just better at it. Don't knock success.

I doubt this will be true unfortunately because 2009 will be another terrible year for the economy with many countries' economies contracting.

People will buy the cheap ***** more often.

 » hacks anyone?

IMHO, the year of PS3 will be kept delayed for the following year unless some sort of hack will be found. Don't get me wrong, PS3 is the best system around but when 360 got hacked people bought the system (even PS2 fanboys got them).

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-12-29
 » sad but true...

Lots of people do buy systems for the free games.

My buddy did this, and it RROD'd on him, now he wants a PS3 but is going to buy another 360 instead because he has so many burnt games for it...

MS makes money on their systems now, so it's not so bad for them....but if this happened to Sony they would be losing money on systems and games....it's better for them if people just don't buy it.
   by HDRasta - 2008-12-30
 » quality

if your going out to buy a 360 your wasting your time and money for a shotty piece of machinery... Lower piece means M$ know they have a SH** system. This all goes back to quality. You want a system thats going to out last the market buy a PS3 dont waste your time.

Let me refer you to this article
