PlayStation Home hacked - Image 1

Ohnoes. Here's something even I wouldn't dare touch with a 20-foot pole. Report I shall, however, to keep you guys in the know. We got one iffy news item on our hands, plus a corresponding bit of rumor: a 2-for-1 combo, if you will.

Earlier, a hacker was reported to have been able to fully unpack and decrypt PlayStation Home beta 0.86. The hack supposedly includes "binaries, scripts, and even in-game executable code." No developments have come out of the hack just yet, and hackers have seen this as something that could eventually lead them to further discoveries.

Be that as it may, the news of the hack has caused some people to panic. Whispers on the web are now saying that PlayStation Home might be delayed due to the disclosure of these sensitive files.

Thanks to James for the heads up.

 » a simple excuse, i could imagine,

but SONY is professionell, they wouldn't actually lie, they can of course always hide the truth with political-ish-speach and without them lying. but they would never lie!

but i honestly could imagine that this is an excuse, it might be real (someone hacked Home LOOOONG time ago), but not neccesarily the course for the apperently upcomming delay :(

 » Or...

It could be corporate subterfuge, and someone affiliated from Microsoft put bogus info out there to slow Sony down from beating them to the draw. I believe MS announced an 11/13 date for their interface revision. Sony only said 'November'. So, I'm sure that MS (or MS-lovers) have a lot of interest in ensuring that Home doesn't come first (or at all). ---I mean, this isn't really a "news" story yet, is it? "A hacker has reported...." --Ooooh. Watch out! It's "A hacker". He's a bad dude. So bad we don't even know his name.

 » mm

true, wouldnt doubt it

anyway, a sercurity breach is serious but can be sorted out fairly easily, depending how far along the hack is, and taking into account the other hacks im heard of, hackers come out to glorify themselves for doing it, the second they do it, and because of it the hack isnt developed to be of much use, and gets fixed

anyway i HIGHLY HIGHLY EXTREMELY doubt that it was hacked to the extent claimed

» you might be right :)

didn't actually think about that before now, Hmmmmm?!!

*IT'S A CONSPIRACY*, or maybe,,,,,, it IS!!

sorry, im just very bored.

 » Well...

I for one think this is real. Yesterday through the boards over at demonoid some programmers were talking about some leaked source codes, binaries and ***** (too complicated for my understanding) related to Playstation Home beta. I think a torrent with all the files and info is up on a torrent in the site, but not sure for what people might want those files...

 » not another one!

well whether its real or not i dont think anyone will be missing out on much. its ok an all but it could be better. but i could believe that some M$ guys put out the rumor.

» Who cares if theres a delay..

StreetskaterFU is a beast.

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-23
» why would you want those files?

you ould ´check them out and see what they're up to nothing else... the 0.86 is not even active yet, so if you managed to get onto you PS3 and install it, you wouldn't be able to "play" it anyways, and one of the reasons why is; because the new update is only for people who recieve an e-mail with a code!

and if people stopped trying to acces/hack it, then we could have been haviong it on our systems by now! think about that.

do note, im NOT accusing you of hacking :) im just saying... something random.

   Re: JaXeRiR - 2008-10-23
 » No..

Understanding how something works is a good way of understanding how to hack it.

It might be true that you can't really do anything worthwhile with the decrypted files, but trust me - you can inspect them and understand how they work, find security flaws etc.

...Not that I would download these files, though.

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-23
» oops, huge mistake in above message

i wrote "0.86 is not even active yet", i meant say "is not even active ANYMORE" :)

im a bit tired so sorry if confusing anyone :)

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-23
 » ok :)

but i still don't get why people want to hack suff, why can't they just show of their skills by actually MAKING something themselves instead of hijacking systems (pentagon...)

anyway, i'm glad that someone here on QJ can reply without flaming :)
have nice day/night (here it's night/evening) :)

"the 0.86 is not even active yet"
OMG IT'S OLD WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT FLFAM FALFAMFAM.

Just kidding, I read the fix. +D
But still, for every update, the ENTIRE code is not updated, just parts to accompany new features, fixes, etc.

So much of this code will still work for future versions.

"but i still don't get why people want to hack suff, why can't they just show of their skills by actually MAKING something themselves instead of hijacking systems (pentagon...)"

As for that, something are obviously harder to hack than others. And...if you COULD hack the Pentagon, you would get partyV+ immediately.

"zOMG LOOK I HACKED THE PENTAGON!!!!!111!!!one!!! OH SHI-- BRB FBI."

Not flamming, but if you take it wrong, then I was flamming you, hardcore flamming.

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-24
 » about pentagon...

2 guys from Denamark managed to hack it, and look at all the infomation... of course that's VERY long time ago, well, not beyond 12 years, the internet wasn't really "active" that long ago, so it has been done...

hehe, I'm from Denmark, though i wasnt the hacker, just so you know xD...

and i know that updates does NOT wipe out early versions data, but in Home's case they did so you HAVE to update to use, AND with the new version you have to get a personal Beta(-code)-invitation!

hehe, im not "flaming" either :)

oh, and the danish hackers, they got arrested almost immedietly :)

Oh well. Sony probably wasn't going to release Home anyways. This is just like the Half-Life 2 incident. They probably are going to have to rewrite all the code or something else of that nature because someone got selfish as usual. There is always someone who will blatantly steal from behind your back even though you promise to pay them, just asking for patience. Home is FREE, yet people will take it now because they are tired of waiting. I don't think this hurt Sony too much though. They'll just patch the PS3 or something.

   Re: Ron Overdrive - 2008-10-23
 » re: zomgzzz

The big difference here is that HL2 was stolen, not hacked (their servers were). The PSHome files were decrypted for analyzing how games work on the PS3 in order to get unsigned game code working (ie homebrew). They technically could have done this with any game from the line up, they just chose Home because its directly from Sony.

 » looking at it

Looking at it now. To me it looks incomplete or fake. There's no way this can be the whole thing and they couldn't even decrypt the file names. The only names they decrypted was the directory names. All the file names are numbers. Even if its the real deal it was done half @$$ed and is completely unusable by devs.

   by tcraw7813 - 2008-10-23
 » RE: to Ron Overdrive

What are you talking about it's definitely not fake. Have you used these files in linux. The files can be completely seen and opened in linux. More than just the names are decrypted.

   Re: Ron Overdrive - 2008-10-23
 » Re: tcraw7813

Yeah I am in Linux, its all I use at home. The file names are all numbers. Sure if I open them up one by one I can tell which is a lua script, xml file, or a binary blob but thats about it. There's no file names and there's barely any directory structure. Unless you know what the file names are and what they do this is pretty much useless and can be a fake.
   by fungusinmymilk - 2008-10-24
 » i hope it's true...

..and they discover an exploit to run unsigned code

i'd rather have an unlocked ps3 then HOME
