Blu-ray disc - Image 1Blu-ray has pretty much taken the cake in Europe and Japan territories, leaving HD-DVD in the dust. In the US, however, the little success PS3 is having gives a major advantage to HD-DVD, thanks to Xbox 360 popularity. Even so, Sony is not giving up the fight. Instead, the efforts of pushing Blu-ray players will increase sixfold this year.

Sony's US home products division senior vice president Randy Waynick stated in a meeting that Sony may ship 600,000 units this year from last year's 100,000, reports Bloomberg. Upcoming Blu-ray titles are expected to boost sales, as 14 to 15 out of 20 blockbusters that will reach high-def format are Blu-ray exclusive.

"You'll see growth in multiples of five or six times for Blu-ray player shipments in the U.S. in 2007 from a year earlier. A lot of that will depend how competitive it becomes," Waynick said.

 » Blu Ray is awesome

I have more blu ray movies then I have Playstaion 3 games. Blu Ray is here to stay!

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-14
 » Yeah, I wonder why

Could it be because sony doesn't give a s*it about games or gamers? The PS3 was always about blu ray and it just happens to be able to play games. Even the cell processor was specially designed to ease HD movie playback. You're paying $200 more, you waited 9 months longer, and you're still waiting for games you hope will come and be what you expected.

But hey who am I to judge? Sony and blu ray are awesome and even though they are using you and your money to promote yet another of their stupid media formats, they are your best friend.

 » yes

you are not to judge. so go away and make love to your sexbox360

the movie 300...

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-06-13
 » You Read My Mind....Almost

300 will definitely be coming to Blu-ray seeing that Playstation Network has had the trailer for download for the longest time. High def movies like 300 on a 1080p tv is what it's all about!

 » 300 Trailer

That trailer is also on the Xbox Live Marketplace. That being said, I believe the film is coming to both formats. Just Google it. ; P

and the report is bogus, Blue Ray is out selling HD DVD 2 to 1 in the U.S.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-14
 » .

...as reported by the blu ray association several months ago.

yep, just straight facts. No special interest groups involved or billions of dollars resting on the outcome.

Even the 50gb claimed capacity of a dual layer blu ray disc is a lie, it is more like 46gb. But hey, what's 4gb? Another advantage of blu ray is apparently (according to the blu ray association) it can win a format war after only 2 weeks of better disc sales. The blu ray association told you it's selling more so it's better. BUY NOW!

You can take off your tinfoil hat Mr CS, there is no consipiracy here. The differential in sizes comes from the fact that two different units for "Mega Byte" are used: 1024 bytes (the actual binary capacity of a MegaByte) and 1000 bytes (the dumbed down "advertized" units).
DL DVDs are *advertized* @ 8.5GB when their actual binary capacity is ~7.8GB.
The same is true for HD-DVD's "advertised" specs as well as HDDs.

Half the capacity of your favorite medium DVD9. Any more questions?

 » NEED STARWARS IN BLURAY

Sony need to ask LUCAS to release the 6 episodes of Star Wars in Blu Ray. This will make Blu Ray tougher to beat. And will sell more stand alone Blu Ray player.

   Re: hmm... (Unregistered) - 2007-06-13
 » well..its CONFIRMED!!...

Star Wars Trilogy Part 1 is coming out on Bluray EXCLUSIVE...since FOX is blu ray only.

Star Wars didn't even come out on DVD for like 4 years when that was the only format available. Keep waiting.....

"However, the little success PS3 is having gives a major advantage to HD-DVD..."
You mean PS3 is having a disadvantage. And how is PS3 having little success? Judging by how many PS3s they sold in the states, when its priced at a high price, Sony is succeeding with PS3.

"thanks to Xbox 360 popularity."
what the hell does its popularity have to do with HDDVD sales? I have a 360 and I didn't buy the player. I don't if your ignorant or not, but the writers of this site really need to read their posts 50 times before its posted. It sounds so unprofessional for a gaming website and it sounds like a kid is writing this.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-06-14
 » yeah but....

It doesn't matter how many blu ray players they ship, they won't sell when they are double the price of HD-DVD players.

» HD-DVD is here to stay

You Sony zeolots need to do your research.

In North America, HD-DVD players presently hold a 60% advantage in standalone players. People who buy standalones, buy more movies than PS3 owners. Just look at the attach rates. HD-DVD has a 5-6 disk per player attach rate vs blurays .5 disk per player (Ps3 included) .

The disk sales are almost equal, HD-DVD has way more releases sheduled this year. And there players just hit the $250 + 5 Free HD-DVDs. This even before the chinese players have landed.

The HD-A2 was the #1 selling DVD player on Amazon last week, and still sits a #3 becuase its presently sold out.

Blu-ray isnt even finished yet, and IMHO, if the PS3 could seal the deal the blu-ray, its only a matter of time before HD-DVD leads in Software sales once again.

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-06-14
 » ????????

6 out of 10 is hardly an advantage!

   Re: datnizzle (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » why?

Why buy a stand alone blu-ray when the ps3 is $600, it would be stupid.

   Re: Thabor (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
» Hate to break it to you..

But the PS3 is a standalone Blu-Ray player no matter how much Toshiba wishes otherwise. You know it too, otherwise you wouldn't be trying to juggle attach rate numbers by trying to include the PS3 as well.

 » Thabor!

Do you understand the meaning of STAND ALONE?
   by mykalt45 (Unregistered) - 2007-06-14
 » Blu-ray

I have a PS3, and I have over 12 Blu-ray. I do think that HD-DVD will be around for a while, mostly because there are so many people that are anti-Sony (even though Sony is only a part of Blu-ray), and because they like Microsoft. I think out of "cheapness" people know more about HD-DVD. It is more accesible to the mainstream than Blu-ray, for now. I have an HDTV and I have over 12 Blu-ray movies. Why? Cause I wanted them, and they look great with my TV.

 » Sickening

How is a major corportation going to release a new technology that is sub-standard (1080i) and get away with (selling) it? HDDVD looks awful, the television won't even display a single full picture, only one half picture at a time.
