Not long after Sony rubbished the PS3 redesign rumors, a few pics turn up showing a "Slim PS3" which is rumored to be in production. Should these pics be real, then perhaps the reason why Sony "doesn't have plans to redesign" the console is because they're already done with it.

Japanese gaming blog Game Column got these pics from an unnamed source, indicating that these might be leaked shots of a Slim PS3 in production. This supposed new 120GB model still has the disc drive on the same place, a matte fingerprint-proof finish, complete with what appears to be two USB ports.

Fine, Sony keeps denying it. But I just had a deja vu here... I wonder why....

oh... right:

It looks sort of stupid. I mean.. It's not a stupid idea, but it sort of looks like a steamroller hit it. I wonder if they cut things off of the ps3 for this? I think I thought the same thing about the slim PS2 though but I got used to it. I like my printer-sized PS3 though =) If anyone ever tries to break in I can beat them to death with it.. My Wii just wouldn't cut it!

IT looks more like a normal PS3 which was stamped down... XD

Nah, but that "version" looks like a bad china ripoff like the "Vii"

those pictures make me want to barf, that cant the REAL final design.

 » ugh

Personally... I really hope that this is a ruse, cos that design is horrendous.. x_x seriously.. could you imagine that thing in your room? I'm aware that the PS3 currently looks like the monolith from which life was evolved, but still... the slim one just looks... nasty.. x_x

 » continuing

besides... if the naming convention is anything to go by... surely it would be called the "PsThree" based on the whole.. "PsTwo" and "PsOne" conventions of the previous slimline models.

   Re: StingBlah - 2009-05-14

it looks like a 2-year-old paper mache'd that thing.

I don't think it would necessarily be called PSThree. I mean the PSP slim wasn't called PSPee...

   Re: aetharr - 2009-05-15

The PSP is irrelevant as it goes through a different naming convention.

Navani "I like my printer-sized PS3 though =) If anyone ever tries to break in I can beat them to death with it.. My Wii just wouldn't cut it!"...Thats pretty funny...they could bring out a ps3 weapon range...ps3's with sharper corners...Did the ps2 get a price cut when the slim came out?..I cant remember..my buddys about to buy a ps3 so I might tell him to hold off a bit if so..I honestly have no idea what to think of those pictures.

 » yeah

I seriously doubt sony would ditch the silver lettering on the ps3 for the old fashioned ps2 look, I think it would be a total turn off for potential buyers. Makes it look cheap.

I like my fat PS3 thank you very much. That thing looks like a...a folder or something. Its too skinny. Or just not pretty, they coulda made it look sexy thats just half a$$ing it. Its a good idea to slim it down and all that but I don't find it attractive.

   by yourmistakes - 2009-05-14
» that can't be it? Can it?

so we basically already know that sony IS working on a new ps3, cuz they already went ahead with the whole no comment thing. that is proof. history does repeat itself. but what i wanna know is are the really going to go with another amp-like design, like they did with the OG ps2? that thing should be screwed onto a subwoofer in trunk.

 » I don't trust this for sh*t

They are only showing a shell of the "PS3"
This looks like a chinese rip off like the VII or the POP or the fake DS.

   by phiyuku - 2009-05-14
» Umm if you don't notice

all the pictures are just the shell of the PS3 and no internal components. So by the looks of it it won't look like that and would prbly be double the size of the first picture shown due to that being the top shell and im assuming the bottom shell is about the same size. This makes it not that much slimmer and looking at the shell itself it looks prty ugly.

   Re: ptspyder - 2009-05-14
 » ...

He's right about the internal components, which makes me think this is something else entirely. This is a prototype of an exterior casing the new model may have, minus any appearance upgrades *chrome, paint, decals, ect*. The reason they would make such a thing would be to problem solve and try to fit the necessary components into this size/shape. Basically, this is a R+D project tool.

i remember before PS3 was launched, SONY stated that they had HUGE issue fitting all that technology into that huge box, so i'm not entirely sure if this is valid, since im in doubt that they already managed to minimize everything this much..
anyways, time will tell.
and i must say, if you look closely, it actually looks good that slim "PS3"

   Re: Seoulfood - 2009-05-14
 » hmm

I think it was because of all the cooling components. They have the new chipset which is like half the size of the original and produces way less heat, so they coulda probably shrunk everything down. I dunno, I like the design, I just hope they don't make it have that matte texture, even though the current model is a dust magnet.

 » Well

First of all those photos don't look very real. or atleast there some ones knock off of what the slim ps3 will look like.
as for looks it just reminds me of the slim ps2. that is a ton of size difference. b ut i unno. i'd still stick with my old ps3. those 1st gen ones can play ps2 games still. and thats been dropped recently so the slim ps3 won't have that.
Not to mention they look fake. But iv seen worse photos of systems/ gaming stuff leaked online and it turned out to be real before soo
you neva kno

I'd trade my fat PS3 for that in a heartbeat. Looks ALOT less scratch proof, which is the PS3's main problem, hardware wise anyway.

are you actually *****ing joking?

THERE IS NOTHING REMOTELY SONY-ISH ABOUT THIS STUPID CHINESE PIECE OF *****.

just because you where holding out for a good quality ps3 for 300 bucks and then if this is real its most likely going to have the pricedrop because of what they took out. Then people like you would complain because you expected the best for 300 bucks but it doesnt wor that way.

No way it's the real design. Looks like ass, and so does that new logo. Looks like some bargain-bin Chinese company decided to make their own remake. Buy at your own cost, it'll catch on fire faster than a first-generation 360.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-05-14
 » ...

I'm not sure what the problem is, especially if it's made by sony, it won't catch on fire.

Obviously the design is meant for people who use entertainment units and stack their equipment.

In that situation you don't see the top or sides of the machine, just the front and you want it to have as slim of a form factor as possible.

I think it's very real and that people with multiple components in their e-unit willl appreciate how thin it is....

   Re: NarooN - 2009-05-14
 » .

*This* obviously wasn't made by Sony. This is some crappy Chinese-made wanna-be slim PS3 unit. No way this thing could run anything besides PS1 games or play music discs without overheating in 2 seconds.

Obviously, the whole point of any smaller redesigns of any hardware is purely for convenience. No one appreciates a giant console taking up as much space as it does when it could take up little.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-05-15
 » hmmm

In case you can't read...you can see "Sony" on the front of the top piece. Not even chinese rip off companies can use Sony's name on their product....it would have to be Somy or something like that...

   Re: aetharr - 2009-05-15
 » ...

@Shatterdome
Your point is valid to some degree, but stacking otr equipment atop that wont work... it is still curved. :/

 » ahhhhh!!!!

yes i agree it is ugly, i already own a ps3 so im happy, but no worries this is definately a prototype im pretty sure its going to look cooler when its complete and i might even get another one for lan parties. i still think sony has some big announcments at e3 so im tuning in cause they are known for denying somthing and then 5 minutes later its confirmed true

   by The Frenchman - 2009-05-14
 » This is real...

I'm sure this is the real deal, it even got the Sony typical screw holes with clip covers... it's definitely not the prettiest, but Slim lines of consoles are always cheaper, in every sense, they are built with cheaper matertials, that's why we see cheapos plastic there, and It's no surprise. SONY is in deep need of a price drop in order to stay competitive, and their continual denials of a price drop show how they can't drop the price on PS3, they can however build a cheaper one. and sell this one cheaper.

Hear me, this model will launch in fall and have a $300 price tag.

   by railman5 - 2009-05-15
 » PS3 SLIM IS REAL!!!!

I certain that they will make a ps3 slim just look at the history ps 1 slim ps 2 slim psp slim etc. it bound to come as far as these pics i believe that they are just a proof of concept pics. these may or may not be the final look. from the pics it looks like they are trying to get the best case that will fit everything in it. They can always worry about cosmetics later and make it glossy like the current ps3.

   by hush404 - 2009-05-15
» I can't believe no one has noticed!

Why, in the first set of pics, does the machine stop at the disc drive and have a space...

while on the box shot it's shown with the usual metal like bar in front of the disc drive?

Quite a bit of inconsistency eh?

   Re: Digitus - 2009-05-15
 » No tard

As was stated, that's the shell of the system. While fugly, I think its probably the real deal. These things are made entirely by machines. Theres got to be some humans walking around the assembly line to put the things together and when you combine that with an employee sneaking in a camera phone you get leaked pictures which is probably what we're seeing here. They'll probably bust this thing out at E3 and be all proud, and if you ask me, its exactly what the PS3 really needs right now to pump up its sales.

   Re: weirdpeople - 2009-05-15
 » all it is...

All it is is a shell of it because if you look at the images close enough you will see that one is the top part of the ps3 and the other is the bottom part and that they would fit together

   Re: DrDeath91 - 2009-05-15
» Or its a scale model of the first... huh?

ya but this could just be a model to work off of it might not be the final project...
