stringerDespite Sony's "high risk" strategy concerning the PS3's pricing, Sony CEO Howard Stringer is confident that the PS3 will come out on top. Though he admits that the price of the next-gen console is high, he quickly stressed that consumers are paying for "potential." Stringer went on to say that if the PS3 lives up to its full potential, the cheaper price of the Xbox 360 and Wii shouldn't be a cause for worry. In fact, he tries to portray the PS3 as an investment, "When you buy into new technology, do you go for a cheaper transitional [product], or do you take a chance on future-proof, higher technology which will keep you going for many, many years?"

His words might have calmed the nerves of shareholders who have been mulling over the idea of selling their stocks after a sharp price decrease, but gamers remain skeptical about Sony's strategy. The company continues to trumpet the Blu-ray capabilities of the PS3 even when gamers are more concerned with games, and if the steep price can be justified by those games.

Stringer also claimed that film executives are "beginning to sense, in Blu-Ray, that the pendulum is swinging, and swinging for a clear reason, namely that Blu-Ray discs can store more data." He conceded that Hollywood will determine which format will emerge victorious in the war, and not PS3.

 » hmm

Although i question his remarks, time will tell if it is truly an investment. They are riding way too much on the blue ray capabilities. First

There's no such thing as 'future proof'. All you can do is hope to prolong the life of a product.

And as for the price of this console:
"I've waited a long time for one, I worked hard for one, I've scrimped and saved for one, but until I play it, I doubt I'll actually BUY one."

Maybe if there are more launch games by the end of 06 I'll pitch the money for it. Otherwise, I'll just be happy with my PS2 for now.

Could the PS3 be ahead of it's time...

If the Blu Ray comes out victorious when compared to the HD DVD format (if any format does reach a practical and affordable position that the DVD format has) then i believe PS3 will win because it is the cheapest Blu Ray player, but only if Blu ray succeeds. And if doesn't i think the PS3 days will look grim... Because Sony is not advertising the PS3 as a game system, but more of a multimedia entertainment system, which includes video games.

they dont have to worry...people will complain, but if the stuff is good then they will buy, regardless of the price.

 » So true..

He has a point... The PS3 is the only console that has a lifespan of about 10 years...

Even IF blu-ray doesn't win over hollywood - which seems highly unlikely, the PS3 still has a huge advantage over it's competitors. The 360 won't be using HD-DVD for games so the PS3 can have more content and whatever else it wants to have.

People can cry about the price but i went down to my local game store and every franchise in aust. has stopped taking pre-orders for the 60gb PS3 because of such high demand.

This thing is going to sell like pancakes whether you think it will or won't. It's a playstation... biggest franchises, biggest library and biggest developers. It's close to impossible for it not to do well.

The End.

 » Who cares?!

Blu Ray is a format. That's all. Disk space will get better and better as time goes by. You can't say anything will have any life span if it isn't even out yet an it will all get better evenutally. I remember when the ps2 came out and the games looked like crap. Madden on ps2 was worse then madden on ps1. Look at it now. The more developers program the more they can put on a disk. Remember FF7? It was three disks. Metal Gear Solid was two disk. The more they program, the more efficent the game are. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be great but not because of blu ray. For me to buy one they will have to make games I like. Which they probably will.
