PS3Early this year, we ran an article on US analyst Evan Wilson's speculations on PS3, which mentioned that Sony's next-gen console will be released in summer 2006 in Japan, November 2006 in the US, and March 2007 in Europe. Then in a later article, SCEE President and CEO David Reeves revealed that Europe may be the first to get their hands on a PS3. Then there's the admission of Kaz Hirai that the production of PS3 has started later than expected. With all these news about PS3's entry to the market, who would not be confused?

Well, confusion on the Sony PS3 release date is now over: SCEE has issued an official statement. But for the European consumers, brace yourself. Seems like Wilson was on track after all.

PlayStation 3 avids in Europe, Russia, Middle East, and other PAL territories have to wait until March next year. The statement says the launch date has been pushed back due to "the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PlayStation 3." Blue laser diodes are a key component of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.

As for PS3's launch date in Japan, November 11 is still the date to mark; while North America gets a November 17 launch. Sony still plans to ship six million PS3 units globally before the end of the 2007 fiscal year.

 » here's and idea

why not delay it in japan or america for once, there getting it cheaper anyway, why should they get it earlier?

   by GameDev - 2006-09-06
 » The only saving grace

is that there will be more launch titles and the console will be cheaper at launch (hopefully).... otherwise this a pretty crappy situation.

Funny. Europe always last. I'm going to cancel my preorder as soon as I can. Thanks Sony :|

» US has a bigger market.

Why would Sony release PS3 in Europe first then Japan and USA? When the USA has the largest gaming market followed by japan then Europe.

USA, USA!

Bloody March! You've got to be kidding... I just hope they don't delay it more - otherwise it will be next summer before Europe sees them.

How they can ship an additional 4 million units after launch and not use some of them for the European launch, is a questionmark to me.

» 8, you sir are wrong

do your price for ps3 was equivelant to our price for the ps2 at launch. also pal is more loyal to sony than another territory and at €600 or £425 (roughly $200 more than you have to pay) thats very important

 » Absolutely bloody scandalous!!!

I cannot express what a massive disapointment this is. It is far too late in the day to be pushing back release dates by 4 months especially considering those that have already pre-ordered.

I can see Bill Gates counting his penny's and laughing at this news. Congratulations, you just handed him a few million sales over the Xmas period.

Sony should just distribute what stock they have across all markets, they will sell out wherever they are released but at least they would be seen to treating all their customers equally.

I only hope that this is some sorta sick joke.

Not good enough Sony. Not good enough.

Xmas period burned, bad impression on the market, preorder cancelled, xbox360 leader on the market with always more game-park available.

Thanks Sony, my preorder will be cancelled this afternoon and Xbox360 will be my next-gen console for Xmas.

Write them that you won't buy a PS3. If thousands do this, maybe they wake up. They won't sell 10% of what they expected!

The impact of this decision is gonna be huge.

Once again, not good enough Sony.

 » Well done sony!

Instead of taking Flak from all regions about shortages like Microsoft (weren't any shortages in Japan though), you have made a foolish choice and have alienated Europe. Good Show *****weeds. I can see 360's and Wii's flying off the shelves this christmas.

 » hmm

its typical. i love the franchises that are associated with the brand name, but sony has lost me this generation. an extra free months AND a higher price? get real sony, it woul be bad enough 3 months more with the US price, let alon a significant price increase. AND the loss of hdmi AND the cheaper model doesent have wifi. i count about 3 nails...

 » grrr

so america still get the ps3 days after japan but europe has to wait another 6 months. that so doesnt seem fair to me. This is kind of swaying me towards getting an xbox360. I know the PS3 is going to be a heck of a lot better in the long run but its way to expensive AND sony keep screwing us over. Plus xbox has got Amped 3 and im getting itchy for a new snowboard game spesh as the new season is just starting. Ohwell my real annoyance is that i wouldnt have been able to buy one till march anyway because, as i just said the new snowboard season is about to start and i so need to start saving for my week on snow, but anyway by march next year i would have enough money and PS3s would be back in stock, now it seems that sony's total lack of respect for europians means that people like me who wont be able to get one at launch wont get one for a heck of a long time to come. I think if they;ve pushed back the europian launch they should have not pushed it back as far and pushed the american one back a bit too.

» Give Me A Break GODDAMN

goddamn sony. first you're stating that for once europe will get their hands on the ps3, then it's worldwide launch and now we, in europe, have to f*cking wait 4 months longer. GODDAMNED @#£%#$* From E3 2005 I've been counting down to the playstation, and now we're so close (I've even got a countdown active desktop) i hear europe gets *****ed again. I'm 15 and I've been saving a lot of money for the PS3 and today I got out of school and I saw SONY did it again. this isn't even the first time something like this happens. Give me a break, let Europe have it on time for once. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fanboy of the first order but for the first time I'm questioning Sony.

@SONY: DON'T MAKE PROMISSES YOU CAN'T FULLFILL, AND DON'T DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU'VE SAID FIRST. I THINK I CAN SPEAK FOR ALL PAL PS GAMERS. WE'RE DONE WITH COMING LAST PLACE.
THIS IS A GREAT THING TO DO TO LOSE A BIG AMOUNT OF FANS. WAY TO GO SONY!
