Sony Corp. pulls through Q1 2007 despite game division losses

Stepping back from the lighter gaming news and dressing up for the industry and investment news, we've learned that Sony Corp. has pulled off more than it had initially expected for the first quarter of this fiscal year even while its game division still struggles to remove itself from the financial red.

And today, reports coming in from the executive division itself have claimed Sony was able to remain green for Q1 2007 because of strong digital camera sales and what seems to be a favorable Yen rate. Financial analysts note that the numbers "more than trebles" for the company, but don't look too kindly to Sony's "strategic pricing" and the losses it incurs.

"This deterioration was primarily due to the loss arising from the strategic pricing of PS3 at points lower than its production cost, although operating income from software increased due to further hardware penetration in the market," said Sony.

The move by Sony to cut the price of its 60 GB PlayStation 3 SKU to US$ 499 was well received by consumers all around, but it slowly derailed from the concept of "price cut" when Sony revealed the maneuver as a temporary low pricing while Sony empties its 60 GB inventory to make way for the new 80 GB SKUs - still offered at the same US$ 599.

The electronics giant posted a JP¥ 66.5 billion (US$ 550 million) profit in an official announcement earlier today, even though Sony Computer Entertainment is dragging with a JP¥ 29.2 billion (US$ 237 million) marked loss. SCE is enjoying a good game sales for the first quarter, however, increasing 60.5% to US$ 1.6 billion.

Strong sales of the PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation Portable (PSP) have also aided the games division in increasing their software sales output, while the "adrenalized" PlayStation 3 sales have begun cutting new territory for Sony's software sales performance.

Overall, Sony reported a 4.7 million unit sales volume for the PS3, 31.1 million unit sales volume for the PSP and 9.9 million unit sales volume for the PS2. Sony still remains optimistic that the PS3 will sell 11 million units worldwide by the end of this fiscal year.

In the early days, SCE championed then-infant Sony Pictures and the electronics division. But by the end of the last fiscal year, SCE cut nearly US$ 2 billion from Sony's bank, and the results for the start of this quarter may clue in a coin toss for next quarter's buy-in, in the eyes of investors.

Sony is still struggling in the flat-screen TV market against the likes of regional market leaders Samsung, and investors are still shaky about digital camera sales and currency strength - two things that could easily sway by next quarter - being the company's financial foothold. Local market analysts, however, haven't excluded the possible.

"The earnings came in way above expectations and the shares will react to that. But worries about its business do remain -- such as slide in prices for liquid crystal display TVs and a wider loss for its PlayStation," said Masaki Iso, chief investment officer at Yasuda Asset Management.

Sony ended at 1.11% yesterday at JP 6,350 (US$ 53.31) in shares - attributed to investors' thumbs up with Sony's climbing profits - allowing the giant to outperform Tokyo's electrical machinery index by 0.11%.

Sony is much like MS at this point. They have kinda out grown true innovation. Sony received a recent slap in the face due to poor sales and it appears as though they may be trying to get on the right track. MS unfortunately received a false sense of security with their lead. It gave them a big head this round and has made them slow to respond to market demands at this point. Nintendo has finally made a return and no one can tell if they will stick to innovation as they have or just get a fat head quickly and slowly rot away.

Sony is facing strong competitions on all fronts these days with Samsung nipping at their heals in consumer electronics and MS and Nintendo lookin at the games division. With all the good news about Blu Ray that may become Sony's new cash cow.

MS will have loads of success for years to come but have a plethora of mediocre software including Vista that is haunting them. They are more than safe for a long long time, but should be worrying about people entering as competition because of their lackluster job.

Nintendo has limited competition now and if they consider everyone a threat may be able to keep on their 'A' game. Many of their software license names hold great clout. Their hardware is winning every front at the moment but with rumors of MS and a handheld, and Sony only in its first rendition of a handheld they should still be worried. Its not a monopoly. They should truly be concerned about their games and diversity. Too many of the games are party games of children games. They need some big names on the console (Dragon Quest helps) besides their own names that is. Technically if the only real games they sell are their own they could make loads more money be being a third party software developer. Their doing a good job they just shouldn't get confortable. Their market is large, but it is also brand new, and very very unpredictable.

Logic above all else.

How will MS have loads of success for years to some if they haven't made a dime yet in the game business. Sounds like BS, no offense your post is good im just saying. Unless your taking about there PC success and yea i agree.

Also you do forget that Sony has money they haven't used yet right, the money there using is like what i said under this post *Sony still has mad amount of money they haven't even used yet, the only money there using is the 10's of billions of dollars made from ps2, just goes to show how rich they are*
So i think its not really hurting Sony and it is, if you get what i mean. But sony has great titles coming out soon and they are very successful in the gaming world so i know they know what to do.

To the first guy:

You are talking about different industries. MS makes their money in OS licenses. Is Sony in that industry? Then the fact that they made 50bn is junk. MS needs to worry about other competition. People coming in on other fronts.

To the second guy:
Their success is in other industries. They'll float the games division until it is profitable, which from what I hear should be very very soon. As a company they need to worry about competition with their slacking in overall innovation though. Its apparent in the games division especially but they are not that concerned with a small division likes games.

I'm not sure if you know, but corporations do not have "bank accounts" that they just store money in. Any extra surplus at the end of the year is generally used for expansion or is invested...and invested money is not accessible whenever you want, it's locked in for a period of time...

Also, you say MS is flopping in the games area, this is true if you look at earnings...but if you are doing that then Sony is the bigger flop as they lost more money in their games division then MS....and MS only lost as much as they did because of shoddy hardware....Sony is just taking it in the ass every time a PS3 is sold...

MS will be in the running as a company for a looooong time...a 51 billion dollar profit compared to 550 million is a HUGE difference....550 million, in the scale of multi-national corporations is actually cutting it pretty close...all it would take is some unforseen problem with PS3's....PSP slims....or their newest laptop batteries and that 550 million could go down the drain easly...

First off PS3 may not be doing well but come on its not as bad as MS with its 6 billion dollar loss in 6 years. Sony still has bmad amount of money they haven't even used yet, the only money there using is the 10's of billions of dollars made from ps2, just goes to show how rich they are. Sony will get back and sell total 1 or more million in 5 months. the 80Gb will get a price cut for sure.

Actually there have been some indication that Blu-ray and cell production costs have dropped to the point where Sony is making a small profit now.

the temporary price cut was attractive. However since it is almost equal to 1 month of my car's payment... I still have to skip =P By the time I paid off my car.. PS999999 will probably be out.
