PS3s

Sony have rubbished rumors started by GamesRadar yesterday that it would be impossible to sell or play used software for the PS3, telling GamesIndustry.biz that it is "false speculation." Yesterday, GamesRadar reported that Sony was warning high street retailers that the sale of pre-owned games would be illegal due to the licensing terms of PS3 software, which technically would still belong to Sony. This rumor quickly spread across the internet, and was reported on numerous gaming news websites, including here at QJ.NET. UK Sony spokesperson Jennie Kong confirmed:

"We have definitely not been communicating that. It's false speculation. We don't have any further knowledge about this topic - either officially or unofficially, to be frank. There has been no official comment on this since the story that came up a few months ago - it hasn't changed since then, and we're quite surprised by why this has popped up again, to be honest."

This isn't the first PS3 rumor started up by GamesRadar which turned out to be false. Earlier this month GamesRadar claimed that the 20GB version of the PS3 would not feature bluetooth support for wireless controllers, a rumour which Sony Smashed a few days later.

Although we did remove the articles once we realised that they were false, we at QJ.net would like to apologize for the rumors sourced from GamesRadar that were posted yesterday. We do strive to provide you with the most up-to-date factual news as it comes in, but this is understandably tough when talking about a console that has yet to be released and still has many questions unanswered... kind of like blogging about Lost.

Its good sony has cleared up the mess, AGAIN, any more anti ps3 news to come?

   by Vietone - 2006-05-25
 » Good

The licensing on PS3 software is the same as on Xbox360 software, in fact the same on just about all software.

I knew this rumor was false to begin with.

I hope QJ only publishes articles that are confirmed and not to include rumours especially from other bogus gamesites such as gamesradar. The reliability of QJ will decrease if you continue to provide false, unconfirmed news. Many bloggers are itching to put in any news they can find on ps3 and I really hope you guys stop this and only post valid, confirmed news. A very good example of this is the ps3land.com. Eventhough, they do not provide any news every hour like most typical game sites, they never provided any false information and they were patient enough regarding this topic and didn't post about it.

 » Thanks #5

There was a little bit of respect lost towards this site now. I'm sure you don't care but I agree with #5, have some pride in a reputation that you could have created and still can.

If they werent so quick to smash the PS3(QJ.NET) they would have realized this was fake. What is it with this site basing the PS3 when its a PS3 site??

by Jake D. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2006-05-25

While I understand the concerns, all this BS about this blog being "anti-PS3" is the speak of fanboys. For crying out loud, we just had a "Why the PS3 will Rock" article a few days ago...

...but then when we post stuff like that, we get accused of being PS3 fanboys. Face it, we can't please all the people all the time. Somehow, we end up accused of being anti-PS3 and pro-PS3 at the same time... I don't know how that's possible, but I chalk it up to being pretty balanced and people from both sides not reading what they want to hear.

In addition, almost any PS3 news between now and launch is going to be based on rumor, speculation, and "inside" info. If we only posted hard facts, we wouldn't have much to post.

(And speaking of PS3Land - the top 3 posts there ATM have titles that end in question marks... that definitely doesn't suggest confirmed news.)

One thing, didn't you guys realise that embedded into the bottom of this posts is an apology? Unlike most game sites, we didn't put in a small line in the corner with size 5 font so you couldn't see it, there's a whole paragraph of an apology.

We know that a few of our articles were wrong, and we have apologised. I just didn't realise how some people didn't accept apologies nowadays. Geez.

 » I like information

I can read though bias, and QJ.net has very little as far as sites go, the appearance of the articles describing the shortcomings of the PS3 would never have appeared on a fan-site.

Also, the articles detailing the abilities, good games, and advantages of the PS3 would never have appeared on a bashing site. This is pretty bloody balanced, they just tend to show everything, instead of just taking the middle-ground.

they are refrensing back to the old November article.

http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20060524153157765035§ionId=1006

thats new (may 24th), the article they mentioned in this thread was this one:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=23921409
Which was posted November 10th 2005.

so in effect, this thread is old news. what the NEW news is that sony is going to be not selling PS3 games, but rather letting you borrow them indefinately, which by law and their agreement, means that you cannot Resell a PS3 game.

so you can still play friends games, but businesses cannot sell used games or rent out PS3 games.

this is annoying, poor old qj are stuck between a rock and a hard place, there are people posting comments such as 'i heard this over 4 hours ago, qj are well slow'... and then others who hate that qj have posted an article which isn't confirmed to be absolute truth.

hasn't anyone noticed that's what the internet really is? it's a big rumour mill, sites such as qj try to filter out bogus from real news, and those titbits of info which aren't confirmed as either go under the heading 'rumour' as in 'don't assume this is truth, but it's what people are saying'.

as for a ps3 bias, i say assume a pro-ps3 standpoint in the ps3 page, as that's why i read this website - it tells me what a would like to know about ps3. if it simply iterated how xbox will beat ps3 the whole time why would i bother? the antips3 sentiment is across the whole internet, people have got it in their heads that the price means the system will be crap.

tell me this, if the 3 systems were free which would you choose? i know it's a daft situation, but i'm going to save enough money to make the choice on that basis, once i can afford any of them i will be able to truly choose.

i sincerely hope sony start releasing some good news about ps3 soon, as there is just too much malicious rumour floating about right now.

You said,
"what the NEW news is that sony is going to be not selling PS3 games, but rather letting you borrow them indefinately, which by law and their agreement, means that you cannot Resell a PS3 game.

OK..... Why are u spreading againg another FALSE rumour?

and no... Sony already answered back in November that this is NOT the case ... otherwise, place like blockbuster will go out of business and sony would loose many shares on their side too.

 » Patent to the technology

Ok, the rumour got started because Sony patented some technology that would "register" or otherwise tie a peice of software to a particular PS3. This would in affect limit it's ability to be given or resold to anyone because it woulnd work on an unregistered system.

THat was not a rumour.

The rumour is that Sony would "actually" use or enforce this technology in PS3. THey have the technology but they have not announced that they will use it. Much like ICT is in the tech spec for High Def movies but might not be used.

Personally, if Sony used it, thus killing sharing and reselling it would be a PR nightmare and they would be shooting themselves in their foot.

i think number 11 is right. that you dont own the game you are just renting it until the end of time. and about your comment on 'blockbuster going out of business because of it' the next time you go into a blockbuster dont just go straight to the games section, have a look around and you might notice they let to rent movies too!
