PS3 - Image 1

Sony CEO Jack Tretton is quite ecstatic with the way their Cell powered beast is selling this year. Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Tretton reveals that the PS3 is actually selling faster than they previously expected it would.

They projected that the PS3 would be able to sell 10 million units by March of next year. (Just so you know, March of next year = end of fiscal year 2008).

Tretton didn't reveal the specific figure of how many PS3 units they've already sold to date - much less which firm's sales data he's keeping track of - however, he seems confident that they'll hit their 10-million mark by March '09, no matter what happens.

We are in good shape for that number worldwide. We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year ... about 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number.

This is a strange article. Sony forecasted 11 million by March 2008 but only reached 9 million. They are at 10 million now, but this article says that 10 million is there March 2009 target? I think Jack needs to go back and check his spreadsheets.

 » I agree (confused)

I'm so confused. I also thought that 10 Million has long been surpassed. Even the site nextgenwars.com shows PS3 at 11.5 Million (today). --Is Tretton talking about an *additional* 10 million above existing 2007 sales? Hmmmm...

Maybe the article was being region specific.

» they need to be specific

The Japanese SCEI site shows that there have been 14.41 million sales worldwide (as of June 30th 2008) so I'm not sure what Jack is on about.

Jack is CEO of SCEA, so the figures are for America.

 » well

if this is true then GREAT and congrats to SONY.
They have a hit with LBP (been playing all day) so they will get an even more significant boost in sales.

 » well, dah!

They are at 15 millions units sold compared to 20 millions x360. And 6 month ago, they were 12 compared to 18, so they sold 1 million more ps3 than x360 in the last 6 months (or so).

The x360 will sell more around the holidays, but in 2k9 the ps3 will more more again. When God of war 3 and other 1st party will pop, it'll own I guess, how to know for real.
