Microsoft logo - Image 1Now that the European Xbox 360 price cut is no longer a rumor but a reality, how will it affect its rival, Sony's very own PlayStation 3? According to analysts, it'll most likely to put a pressure on the sleek black console when it comes to pricing.

And what a pressure it will be. With Microsoft's Xbox 360 most expensive SKU, Elite, being GBP 40 (US$ 80.26) less expensive than the PlayStation 3, Microsoft's next-gen console is looking all the more appealing to gamers indeed. Principal analyst David Mercer said:

Sony will be nervous that the PS3's recent sales surge may fizzle out now that the premium Xbox 360 undercuts the PS3 by GBP 40, and the cheapest Xbox model is almost half the price of a PS3 .

So what will be Sony's gameplan? According to Mercer, Sony will most likely be careful to focus on their daily sales, but will "hold out until later in the year before making its next price move." In any case, it looks like that the winner in the end will always be the end users, the gamers.

Sony Will Always Be Underpressure So Long That Games Are Multiplatform Cutting The Price On The 360 Mean PEOPLE not FANBOYS Will Go For A System That Cost Less And Can Play The Same Games As The PS3 So Until The PS3 Gets More Exclusives Its Always Gonna Be Underpressure.

"People not Fanboys" (as you like to call it) don't even know about the XBox ESPECIALLY outside the US... to them it has always been SONY PLAYSTATION.

the PS3 has always been more expensive (and it's more so in Europe than anywhere else) but still it continuously outsells the 360 week-in and week-out... that's the strength of the Playstation brand and no measley small price cut will change that... price cuts has a larger effect in NA (look at all the complaints about the PS3 price everywhere you look in the internet it's always the Americans and the American media and to think they have a way cheaper PS3)...

people has always bought the PS3 in Europe regardless of the price and it will continue to do so, and even more now with Blu Ray more than justifying any price difference, unless MS can gets it hands on the huge Europe-selling exclusives like Gran Turismo and others... and we all know that is not gonna happen.

I wouldn't call a 70 EUR price cut "measley".

Americans aren't the only people that complain about prices of technology. The PS3 is the most expensive gaming console, and it's not a drop in the ocean for most people. I sure alot of people are waiting for the price to drop before they buy.

If the Playstation brand is so strong in Europe and price doesnt matter, why is it still being outsold by the Wii?

Sony market the PS3 HEAPS better in Europe than MS. I think with this price cut and the GTA IV launch, MS is going to try and turn that around. With an entry level 360 half the price of a entry level PS3 console, a simlulatenous release of GTA IV, and a massive marketing budget that MS has organised with Rockstar, I would expect a huge spike in 360 sales in Europe.

I think Sony could easily counter this with their own price cut. But because they have chopped so much off already, they have decided to go with the different colored SKU option. We will probably see the silver grill hitting stores in early April.

I think price does matter for the PS3. I'm sure there is lots of people waiting for the console to come down in price. Will those people continue to hold out when big third party titles are being released (specifically GTA IV) on a console half the price? Only time will tell.

Finally, whats wrong with a little added pressure? Pressure has forced Sony to try and copy MS entire online stratergy, add rumble back to their controllers, cut the price $200 in it's first 10 months and bundle their first party titles in starter packs.

'' Finally, whats wrong with a little added pressure? Pressure has forced Sony to try and copy MS entire online strategy, add rumble back to their controllers, cut the price $200 in it's first 10 months and bundle their first party titles in starter packs. ''

Would you care to explain how did Sony copy MS online and any other MS move?

This time around you are mistaken and miss leading...

How is Home even close related to Xbox live?
Ok you need an Internet connection for both...what else?

Achievements I hear you say...well did you forget the Elite? I dont recall you saying that the Elite was a ripoff attempt on MS's behalf to near the ps3's out of the box capabilities...After all they did say that HDMI is not needed this gen...well it wasnt so afterall.

What the hell competition right?

Rumble? What ?I would say MS copied rumble from the first people who incorporated rumble as a console feature... yes that was sony with the ps2.

And since when cutting down the cost of a product is a desperate act ? I thought all electronics drop in price to remain competitive and affordable in accordance to another brand? Its by for not a copy out move and by any means bring it on me and you as the consumers benefit from this kind of pressure.

So again stop posting misleading staff like that and focus on the reality at hand competition acts are not coping.

Nah, that was Nintendo with the N64. :-)

DVDevise is rite about ppl waiting for price cuts

BUT Its a shame we have to repeat over and over again about the so-called copying.

Sega DC had online. ???? well?

After recently discovering xbox Live is P2P, i beg to question, WHY DO WE PAY FOR IT? sure £40/$50-$60 is nothing. I wipe my ass with £40. But paying for something that isnt costly jus makes all 360 owners a saint!

MS need to catch up with Sony's 40player resistance and warhawks 32player IMO.

The only thing priceless with Live is the amount of ppl talking and taunting with a mic.

Stop charging for LIVE or start setting up dedicated servers. Its annoying when the host gets disconnected

   Re: logicbomb.de - 2008-03-11
 » lol servers

pretty much EVERY PS3 game is P2P except for Warhawk and Resistance as they actually DO have dedicated servers... but guess what?

if you play on a server (WH, RFoM) with less than 32 players, its still running in P2P configuration.

The blind belief that all PS3 games that have online multiplayer use dedicated servers is really quite amusing.

plus the paying for LIVE arguments is soooo old and tired why even bring it up? Its less than $1 a week if you buy a whole years worth...

MS standardised online gaming on consoles. Friends list, game invites, downloadable content, downloadable demos, downloadable arcade games, in game sound track, background downloading, video marketplace, um what else has Sony copied or is going to copy hmmm, and achievements.

I dont have any problem with Sony coping online features that MS has brought to consoles. It's just a fact that at the moment Sony is coping from the MS textbook. Home is differently different, I didn't say they were copying MS 1 for 1, just the features.

And I never said Sony copied rumble. Pressure from poor sales performance and community outcry forced Sony to backflip on their rumble stance. Yes MS backed flipped on HDMI, nd yes that was from pressure from the PS3. That was pretty much my whole point, pressure + more/better features, price cuts and happy customers.

@na2rul
If you owned a 360 you would easily see the difference between Live and PSN. There are games on live that support upto 50 players. It's just that most developers prefer to balance their games online experience and that's more easily done with 16 player matches.

The price cut won't matter that much. Fact is the PS3 has the best Line-up of games, and exclusive games, this year. Sony will eventually win this year, this is Sony's year. With Home and In-game XMB and the games. Fact is Sony beat 360 and Wii worldwide in January with Multiplatform games, amazing right.

DVSDevise yeah some are waiting but its not alot though. And most people who have waiting this far was waiting for the big games, like GTA4, MGS4, GT5 and the list continues. Even with MS cutting the 360 price and getting DLC for GTA4 its no going to increase sales alot.

What MS did was desperate, paying millions for DLC cause they knew people would buy the PS3 version anyway, so instead they did this in hopes to get more people to buy theirs. But its not going to be enough. The DLC isn't appealing to me so im not going to pay for another version of a game i already paid for.

Fact is Sony isn't copying MS, they making better versions of what MS 360 has. Its called improvements.

As for Rumble, Sony was going to add it regardless, they just didn't tell anyone the truth of it.

"After all they did say that HDMI is not needed this gen"

nah, they said hdmi is not needed for HD, they didn't say it was not needed period (big difference). this was at a time when people were claiming you can only get 'true hd' or 1080p with hdmi. ms were right, you don't need hdmi for 1080p, but since hdmi is just a video/audio hd port, it made sense to include it in later models when the price was right. :)

 » PS3 vs 360

Well, all I have to say is that no matter what, the PS3 is going to catch up. I am not saying that the 360 will be totally surpassed by the PS3, but it will definitely be a level war once all the exclusives come out for PS3. Also the format war boosted the PS3 no doubt. But everyone is always talking about the online service, which in my opinion its not very hard to copy another service and then add your own little customizations to it. This is what PS3 will do, but I am not berating them on it, I am somewhat encouraging it. And once all the great functions from the 360 go into PS3 in terms of online service, that may be shorten the gap of bickering between fanboys about which console is better.

   Re: na2rul - 2008-03-11
 » well heres my thought

since DC had online b4 any last gen, PS2 STILL had no modem.

IMO, sony knew it wasnt worthwhile to incorporate online until broadband internet becomes more established.

Sony waited till THIS GEN for online which completely makes sense. Xbox 1's LIVE however wasnt wrong either since the market was still open

 » $80 Difference Eh

Well, I guess that Sony would do a $40-$60 (More likely $50) price cut to counter or just make a new model and then give the 40Gb a huge $100 price cut.

 » @Quixand

Your completely wrong the ps3 didn't start outselling the 360 is EU until it had it's price cut.I do agree with u on the ps part ppl in EU are used to playstation, but the Wii and 36 hanged all that the ps3 won't get a free ride anymore it had to work for it to outsell the 360 and when it started outselling 360 the price was close. As Powerslave89 most ppl care only about price now that the 360 is so cheap it's bound to eat in the ps3 fanbase it won't affect the Wii though.

Quit using stupid promises to compare one machine to the other. We have no idea how/if @home will work. I'm so tired of you stupid fanboys and the way you defend your system more than your own mothers grave. I recently got a high end pc and dont' really care much for my 360 anymore so i don't give a rats @ss who wins this stupid thing anymore. So i'm finally not a fanboy anymore and it's a very freeing feeling. Do yourselves a favor and go outside and get some fresh air or something.

i see, so you -used- to be a fanboy? isn't it better never to be a fanboy at all?

"Do yourselves a favor and go outside and get some fresh air or something."

yeah, because you were outside getting fresh air when you typed out that post of yours. yes? ;-D

come here you big teddy bear let me give you a hug. Normally your comments would bother me but now that i'm not a fanboy i don't care. Although maybe i'm a pc fanboy i'm not sure but nobody really messes with them because they know the pc is way better.

comes down in price or deals will be there to be had... cuz good ole Georgie W (apparenly for his end legacy) will be buying me a PS3 with his economic stimulus package... kinda upsetting that a country's economic stimulus package will more than likely be spent on foreign products but oh well.

yep,

I bought a PS2 with my George Dubya money back in 2001, me thinks a repeat (with PS3) is in good order!

Umm...it depends how much money you're willing and can spend on gaming. For me, sure, I can easily get a 3000+ gaming rig that destroys any consoles in terms of running games beautifully. However, I am not willing to spend that much. People have lives, they have other things to spend money on, like a girlfriend?
