Sony PlayStation 3 XMB - Image 1

If you were one of the few unfortunate PlayStation 3 owners who had problems with last week's firmware update 2.40, Sony has finally announced the release of the much awaited 2.41 fix. It looks like the rumor about the update reaching us by midweek proved itself true this time.

As many of you already know, the latest update aimed to address the various freezing problems encountered when FW 2.40 was first released. Eric we, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, earlier announced that the new firmware update 2.41 should be up and running very soon.

Lempel also extended Sony's apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience they experienced with the near-fatal glitch. In any case, you'd better fire up your console and update your system (we've already done so on our own console and it's all good).

Hopefully, we won't be seeing any more problems thanks to this fixer-upper from Sony. Check back with us again just in case we get more updates regarding the new firmware 2.41 update.

Snaps to SpoonE, xploren, MohammadAG, jj_ob, s0nlxaftrsh0ck for the tip.

I hope this fixes problems for everyone who experienced them. Maybe it also stabilized the network, since me and others noticed an increase in lag globally since the advent of 2.40.

didn't have any problems with 2.4 but i think i'd wait till tomorrow to update... it's already night here in australia anyway so i'll sleep it off first.

you shoud put it on now so when you wake up it will be all downloaded

2.41 has the ability for you to tick a box which will turn the system off after the update has completed.

Also where as you used to have to hit the ps button to promt it to install after it had downloaded after a couple of mins the installl process start automagically.

I guess this is so that if you wish you can set it going at leave it alone to do its work.

Pretty neat if you run a rush.

cant say i have noticed any speed improvments in the operation of the ingame xmb but thats no problem.

 » actually...

Those are all parts of the 2.40 firmware update.

Think about it. When you went to download 2.41 it asked you if you wanted to turn off the system after the update. You don't have 2.41 just yet.

Same with the other things you said. I can see how you got mistaken though.

Oh well never in mind :P

I saw this too, but I'm wondering if the 2.36 users MAYBE saw it...

Realistically, it's probably just the tail end of the 2.4 update, but it'd be interesting if it was available for them too.

Can't wait to try it out. Glad I didn't try 2.40 before it was removed.

 » It's been a long time...

I am sure that you feel this way, MCS. According to reports on the WWW there are many problems. I think that this is a far reaching assumption and the problem is being way overblown. I see this move by Sony as nothing but a PR move.

I missed the update as you did but I found a site hosting it, downloaded it, and ran it as soon as possible. My result after leaving the PS3 to run it's course? No problems whatsoever just like the huge majority of other PS3 owners that ran the update without any problems.

Basically what I am saying is that I probably will not even worry about updating until a worthwhile update is out there. 2.40 works just fine for me! Although if you follow the link to the PlayStation blog it looks like you may need to update if you read the comments.

BTW, long time no see, I am a lot busier now with two kids, etc... I hope that I have reassured you that if you let the machine run it's course during updates and do things like not turn it off when the HDD is being accessed you will most likely never have any problems whatsover.

I hate to tell you this, MCS, but this machine requires no intervention like making sure that you don't tip it on it's side when using it, upgrading its heat sink compound, or making sure that it is not enclosed in any way that will make it too hot. This machine is tough. Mine is NEVER turned off, ever!

P.S. I hope that you noticed how vaguely they described the problem. There most likely never was one in the first place. Only F.U.D. and user error!

Thanks for hanging in there till the end of my post!!

How will this update fix people's PS3 that were essentially bricked by the 2.40 update?

I heard people say if you remove your HDD and then re-insert and re-format it you will be able to get to the XMB again to update to 2.41. You lose all your data this way though.

» -im glad Sony is keeping on top of things!

things i would like in future firmware updates:

1. private chat (4 ppl would be nice)
2. fix random sign-outs
3. a option 2 join a friends game
4. fix bluetooth headsets problems (usb headsets work better at the mo)
5. random tunes starts automatically when ps3 is turned on
6. get rid of ingame xmb options like the internet 1, there is no point having an icon if u cant use it. even better make the icons do something ingame!
7. send files 2 friends in the chatroom like videos, music, web links etc.
8. more internet support (the programs used at the mo r old)
9. HD video looping background

i would also like more online 2 player split-screen support.
the list above keep me happy till the ps4 shows up.

   Re: Donciclon - 2008-07-08
 » bluetooth??

I bought a $20 bluetooth headset off a street vender almost half a year ago and have been using it with my ps3 ever since without a problem. Try using a different headset.

And i haven't experienced a random sign out. It could be your network connection/configuration.

   Re: theaceoffire - 2008-07-08
 » About the signout

My GF uses my profile on her PS3 to download stuff that I bought, and every time she logs in it knocks me off. Did you give your info to someone else?

   Re: damonous - 2008-07-08
 » Not every happy, huh?

@nuffsaid: Do we REALLY need random tunes at startup, or HD video looping on the desktop? How would that help stability or performance of this GAMING SYSTEM? --I'm with you on private chat, cross-game. I'd even appreciate vidchat using the Eye and a PSP. I also agree that (minimally) I'd like to be able to email save-games to friends. However, some of the other stuff is low, low, LOW on any conceivable list. For features in the esoteric realm, then I'd much prefer being able to hook my SONY Ericsson phone up to the PS3 via bluetooth and transfer photos over (or even upload MP3's from the PS3 to the phone). --That would also add yet more value to the PS3 and to buying Sony-branded products in general, so I'm rather surprised they haven't done so yet as it is.

@Donciclon. my headset is a jabra, 1 of the best for the ps3. the problem is, bluetooth on the ps3 is resource hungry. some games r fine using it but some games i have played like vegas, graw, mgo and bfbc have problems wot need fixing. if i use my socom usb headset there is no problems (usb+less resource), but i want wireless.

the sign-outs mainly happen when im playing a single player game like mgs4 and gta. this happens 2 my friends 2, i thought it was a standard problem, me and my friends r using a wireless router.

@theaceoffire. my tag is on my friends ps3 and there tags r on mine, so we can do the same as u (did u know the cod mappack can be downloaded). ill ask them 2 delete my tag, c if its better.

@damonous. private chat and joining a friends game r the most important updates 2 me on the list, the rest r less important but i would like 2 still c it done(not this real-time globe cr*p there making). i have a modded xbox and on the dashboard u can have a video background and auto music on start up, i just think its cool and i miss it when im playing my ps3.
i think u have 2 wait till home 4 ur mobile fix. i remember seeing good old phil harrison taking a pic on his S-E mobile and putting the pic straight in a photo frame in home.

   Re: keengsnake - 2008-07-11
 » if you

read the MGO setup it says that a cable(Ethernet) is allot more stable and you get faster down/up speed than WIFI . I can guarantee that if you switch from wifi to Ether. you will never experience the same problem . Unless you have an unstable network.

 » sloooowww

Was the download for 2.41 really really slow for anyone else? I'm downloading it now and it is just crawling.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-07-08
 » meh.

It's always slow. It doesn't have much to do with our connections since online play doesn't suffer from this. The PS3 doesn't use a lot of your bandwidth when downloading things from it's server, so things can go slow for a lot of people. Unless you have like T1 or something.
