The PlayStation 3 20 GB model - Image 1Based on a tip we picked up from reader Hummer_dk, we decided to check out the Sony Style (U.S.) online shop regarding its apparent pullout of the PlayStation3 20GB console. And while typing in "PlayStation 3" yielded plenty of related results, which ranged from the PS3 60GB console, the PS3 remote, the PS3 Audio/Video Cable, and the PS3 SIXAXIS controller, the PS3 20GB model was nowhere to be seen.

Trying our luck a little more, we tried a couple of more keywords, such as "PlayStation 3 20GB", "PS3 20GB", and just "20GB" - nothing. We tried typing "60GB" for extra measure, and sure enough, search results appeared for the PS3 60GB. It appears that the Sony Style has indeed closed its doors to the PS3 20GB model. Either that, or we're experiencing a bizarre search engine fluke.

It will be remembered that last month, SCEA senior director of communications Dave Karraker explained that there were still supplies of the 20GB model available in North America, although retailers were stocking more of the 60GB model. It will be further remembered that Best Buy was confirmed to be removing the 20GB version from their store shelves.

 » Suprised?

It would cost them more in the long run to have systems on the shelves that most people didn't want.

It didn't look as nice in completely black. It didn't have wifi. That 20gig drive wasn't an issue for me but it was for some.

The lack of wifi was what killed me on that one. I just can't afford to rewire my house or run cables through the halls.

I think there should have only been 1 sku in the beginning anyway.

I think the second sku was just to offer a slightly cheaper alternative to battle the "OMG PS3 + $600!!". But honestly, their weaker sku at it's core has more than the 360's weaker sku. At least sony made it so that the 60gb model really just added extra functionality like wifi, media cards and extra space.

soon all the 20 GB might not be on the market than it'll be a rare item.

 » who cares!

Hell, as much as people whine about the price, the majority of them go for the 60gb model and it's not making much sense for sony to make the 20gb model widely offered. Also... the 20gb costs Sony more money to sell than the 60gb model, thus the more 60gb models sold over over 20gb is better for Sony, financially.

 » Good.

They probably could have never offered it to begin with and cut the 60gb price a little bit.

» BestBuy not the only one...

BestBuy is not the only one not carrying the 20GB model anymore. I work for EB Games and a few weeks ago the company sent out an email to all the stores and it said the that company (EB and GameStop) is no longer going to carry the 20GB model due to the higher interest and demand in the 60GB model.
