As we come to our first Christmas with the PlayStation 3 there's going to be about 65 games in the marketplace, so we feel now that there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down so that people can get into the franchise. |

I was under the impression that backward compatibility was a major feature in the Playstation brand they Sony customer want. What do you guys think?

cutting down the backwards compatibility of PS2 softwares on the PS3 is not "not supporting" the PS2...
they are still churning out PS2s by the boatload and titles keep on coming, to me that is very good support that they are showing the PS2 and personally that should be enough cause that was how PS2 has been even before the PS3 arrived, nothing changes for the PS2... so what the hell is all this Sony not supporting the PS2??? the damn thing is selling more than both the XBox and PS3 and there are more titles for it on a regular basis than both!!! The PS2 is alive and kicking!! more alive than the XBox 360 and PS3!!!! So can it with all this talk about Sony not supporting the PS2...
and this move shows that they are focusing more additional support for the PS3 with PS3 owners concentration going to PS3 titles and as he said more money for PS3 games development.
nothing is being shortchanged between the two platforms... PS2 lives it's life as it has been doing so for seven years now... and the PS3 gets more love.

Do they mean that it won't have the emotion engine or that it won't be backwards compatible at all? What about wi-fi, will it come with wi-fi? Too many blanks unanswered. I mean they are doing emulated backwards compatibility right?

Whilst most of the games work i brought alter iris 3 and it doesnt work. Hope they dont reove these updates. I think ppl shud just buy the full fat version a price drop on the 60 and 80 gb shud b sufficient

my god, I think it's already BAD that the ps3 cost 50$ more in canada then in US for absolutly no reason, but also the double in europe? what the hell. I mean, I paid my 80g PS3 with a remote (and motorstorm, dah) for a total of 549$CAD, and the CAD$ is only worth a LITTLE bit more than the US$!!! (almost no differences). :S (I know I had a good price, but they are going to spend (europeans) the same amount of money that I spent, but this time, for the 40g with less stuff and without a remote...

Actually in Sony's press release it mentioned this.

Anyone remember Sony Tooting its horn saying unlike the 360 silly BC the PS3 will have 100% support with dedicated hardware out of box?.

This is a cheap alternative for people that already have a PS2 and or just want a cheaper PS3 for PS3 games.

luckily ive got a 60 gig ps3 already but it is software bc!!!
does this now mean that even the existing machines in europe without emotion chip (ie with software bc support) are not going to get bc updates as well to make any more of the current games compatible??
because if they are using the software bc in future firmware for the machines that are software bc, then why cant the 40gig one not be?
from what the uk boss is saying, they're not going to waste any more cash on making the software ps3 software bc!!!
