Tokyo Game Show 2007 - Image 1

Just yesterday, we reported on the buzz surrounding the mysterious PlayStation 3 controller discovered at EA's pre-Tokyo Game Show press event. We expected more info from Kaz Hirai's keynote and well, now we have confirmation. Yes, DualShock 3.

SCE's president has confirmed what we have all been waiting for: SIXAXIS with Rumble (QJ blogger Chris L. would have been so happy). According to the press release, the third incarnation of the DualShock controller will be unleashed upon Japan as a separate accessory this November while North America and UK will have to wait until spring of 2008.

DualShock 3 will be mixing the motion sensitive SIXAXIS functions with the well loved rumble feature. It promises to bring a more immersive gameplay experience - force feedback, anyone? Also, another good thing about the said controller is that it can be made compatible with old (or already released) PS3 games. Quoting Sony's PR, "PS3 titles that are already in the market may become compatible with the rumble feature through software update".

We got a hold of the list of games incorporating compatibility with the DualShock 3 and let us tell you, we're all stopping ourselves from being reduced to giddy little girls. The list by the way has some released games on it and as we said, they'll be compatible with the controller via a software update. Here's the list (as of September 20, 2007):

Great way for Sony to make some extra money. They should sell a few million of these this Christmas.

And they also officially delayed Home till the spring of next year. Nice work Sony.

 » "F**K YEAH!"

That will give me time for my controller batteries to use up their life somewhat anyways. Great to know it is back and that past games will get the update!

I'm a bit sad to not see SOCOM anywhere on that list.

 » nvm

Nevermind, I didn't know there was a full list after the jump.

» here's the info you overlooked

its number 17 up from the bottom. Socom Confrontation. I just hope that ps2 games will work with it.

Also HOME is slated for a public beta in Nobvember, so Home is coming this year, the full tested alpha version is being released in 2008 worldwide at the same time. XSux Live killer!

 » lol @ Vampire Rain

They actually bothered to update that piece of garbage for rumble?

Anyway, good move by Sony, it's about damn time. Rumble is awesome, and games like FPSs just aren't the same without it.

I'm assuming this will eventually be packed in with all PS3s? I was planning on picking up a PS3 in Spring 08 for MGS4, and I'm guessing they probably won't be packed in at the same time they are released, or else everyone would return the PS3s that don't include the rumble controller. I guess I'd just have to buy the controller alongside the system. No big deal really, $50 or $60 isn't much, and then I'd have an extra controller.

Damn, I already have two non-rumble SIXAXIS controllers.

   Re: Beefy - 2007-09-20
 » ya..

same here... they should have had rumble since the beginning.. theyre prolly just tryin to boost sales now

it was going to happen, it was inevitable. Thanks Sony, also nice list.

» NOBODY will want their sixaxis controllers anymore

I have four sixaxis controllers. Obviously, I will want to replace every one of them with a Dualshock3. Sony had better offer some dang good reimbursement on trade-ins for the sixaxis. Its not cool to charge $60 for a controller only to make it obsolete one year later.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2007-09-20
 » uh..

actually its still sixaxis.. just with rumble added
   by tobyo1 - 2007-09-20
 » ps2 games

Woo hoo!!! Great to see a rumble sixaxis (sorry, I mean Dualshock 3) but I hope Sony remember to do a FW update making rumble work with PS2 games as well!

THX SONY!!

 » im pretty sure

You can already add killzone 2 to this list lol (they wouldnt leave it out of that game). They prolly didnt put it on the list cause killzone 2 dosnt even have a release date.

» They may not have a nounced it

But if you go to your local Game Stop you can pre-order Killzone 2 for February 2nd. I was surprised as hell when I saw it on their list for pre-orders, but there it was and I got mine pre-ordered already. Can't wait to get my hands on this game.
