» Best move ever!!!!
The modchip was originally created to play imported games and somewhere along someone could exploit it to play burnned games.
Being able to import and not worry about region coding in games is one less reason to get a mod chip. With all the steps they have taken so far with security measures in the PS3, i doubt there will ever be a fully functional modchip, you might be able to play some games but not all.

» nice
this is a good step forward! (afaik the sdk is available for few money too, would be nice if it is payable like a game!) so homebrew would be possible too?

what was that? sdk ... homebrew? i like the idea of region free, it does sound like they're going all 'global' considering the location free thing etc.
i have bought imports for gamecube, but not ps2 cos i don't want to 'chip' anything... but now it's ok! hoorah

» brilliant idea...
Its a good idea, but its another reason for Ebay and Lik-sang to go crazy with prices. I would import one but the money isnt there. I hope they release games in each region at the same time, rather than like a week later.

i think its great news. play jap or us games with out chip modding the PS. i am curious about how they solve problems with PAL and NTSC. i allways wanted to play games in original language synched with local subtitles. no more dubbs sounding like adult films ^-^

Best. Decision. Ever.
Now we can play those strange japanese games in the US with our non-modded PS3's!

Is Sony becoming the Mr. Nice guy this generation? Earlier they would kick you in the nuts whenever you tried to do anything... Like playing foreign games or homebrew...

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison, in a session following his address at GDC 2006, confirmed (unbelievably) that the PS3 will be region-free for gaming.
