PS3 - Image 1

Following yesterday's report that a Sony patent was spotted, pointing to a purely software-based solution to the PS2 emulation issue, TheSixthAxis reports that the PS2 emulation issue isn't due to the Emotion Engine, which is already up and running. The problem lies with the Graphics Synthesizer, which now appears to be an obstacle to downloadable PS2 games on the PlayStation Store.

Since PS3s are already equipped with Emotion Engine emulation, there wouldn't be a need to have a new EE on the PS3. According to lherre at the NeoGAF Forums, "PS3 is capable to run ps2 games with 100 % software emulation but the performance and compatibility is really poor ... the emulator is present in every ps3 in the market (since 2.10 if I remember correctly) but is "deactivated". If you can "see" the ps3 flash you will see some interesting files on it."

Now if Sony manages to fix the issues with the Graphics Synthesizer, it should be possible to see downloadable PS2 games at the PlayStation Store. Then again, that's just the rumor.

 » Awesome.

But if we did somehow get PS2 compatibility, a lot of people are going to be mad (those with already backwards compatible PS3s). :|

   Re: truk - 2009-06-30
» why whould we be mad?

i wouldn't

   Re: Vman00 - 2009-06-30
 » i believe

that people who already have the compatibility aren't really going to care much. heck, i stopped playing ps2 games on my ps3

   Re: hush404 - 2009-06-30
 » Well

I have an original 60gb ps3 with the full BC and think it's great! I play old ps2 games from tiem to time and pick up ones I missed along the way too.

If Sony gets the emulation up and running so that everyone can enjoy BC then thats great. All the more people who may decide to get a PS3 and then play online with the rest of us PS3ers.

   Re: GodGates - 2009-06-30
 » Well...

I guess I should have said "some" instead of "a lot." Cuz I know a few people with BC PS3s, and they've told me that it would devalue their PS3s.

   Re: Lain_OTN - 2009-07-01
 » Ohhhh I won't get mad...

Why?!?!?!. I have a BC version and i'm pretty happy, (I never have a ps2 and now i'm playing lots of good titles) IF BC comes to all ps3 versions sony would put PS2 on PS Store and that would be great!!!!!! BC for all consoles and PS2 titles on Store Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (If people get mad for good news.... then that people are stu**pid)

   Re: Walo - 2009-07-01
 » why?...

I wouldn't get mad either, in fact it will be good news as more people will see added value on the ps3.

   Re: Stealth! - 2009-07-04
» I know I'm going to sound sad

But tbh, I think trophies have made playing PS3 games even better than playing PS2 games.

Now while I still have a bunch of good titles for my PS2(and others I gave to some and never gave it back :( ) I'd rather play PS3 games though. And I have the original. The games coming out is just so effing good compared to the PS2 games. So I wouldn't be mad, in fact I'd welcome this so people can finally buy the PS3, increase the sales and join us playing some fantastic games online. Like Battlefield Bad Company, uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 :D

 » meh

I really need to get around to getting a modded PS2. I completely missed out on some great games that generation.

   Re: hush404 - 2009-06-30
 » really?

Why would you need to mod it? PS2 games are cheap as balls at places like ebgames/gamestop.

 » yo

wud it have downloadable games for da 160gb

   Re: joebo19x - 2009-06-30
 » yes.

it would have dlable games for all ps3 versions.

 » ...waiting...

the BC issue is what has kept me from buying a new PS3 so far...

I've been shopping around for a used 60gb due to that fact alone. I still play my PS2 from time to time, however its doesn't read all of my discs anymore and I don't want ANOTHER game system hooked up to my HDTV, it would make it extremely cluttered on the stand.

If they resolve this issue this summer, I will definately be picking one up end of summer/ fall timeframe.

   Re: sickofitall - 2009-07-01
 » check amazon

they are still selling the 80gb ps3 with metal gear bundle. That version should be software BC with ps2 games.

   Re: death - 2009-07-01
» thats what i was gonna say

i have the original 80 gb wit software emu and have yet to find 1 game i can't play on it (mind you i DL the ps2 system data from the PSstore) definetly the better deal ppl overcharge for the 60gb because its hardware bc instead of software
   by core2kid18 - 2009-07-01
 » so basically

all software emulated ps3's such as the 80GB MGS bundle and Motorstorm bundle are equipped with the Graphics Synthesizer but not emotion engine?
Why not put back the EE and GS? It can't be that expensive once the speculated "slim PS3" comes out.

   Re: truk - 2009-07-05
» you must be a noob here

let me show you the ropes: everyone, for some reason, thinks the ps3 is priced too high even though it is being sold for less than it's made. so any increase in price will have people *****ting themselves
   by EugeneE - 2009-07-01
 » Doesn't bother me

This news article doesn't bother me even though I have a 60 GB PS3 and I do play PS1, PS2 & PS3 games on it.

If Sony can get PS2 compatibility on all PS3's, this will be a good thing since people would be able to go out a experience many great PS2 games such as the original Jak & Ratchet games, Kingdom Hearts, Rise To Honor, etc.

   Re: core2kid18 - 2009-07-01
 » ratchet and clank

those games don't work on the 80GB PS3's that have the graphics synthesizer to I doubt it'll work on any PS3 except the 60GBs. I do love those games though.
   by zahi - 2009-07-01
 » who cares

why do ppl care if you can play ps2 on a ps3 or not?! what's the point of a ps3 if you're gonna play ps2 games? there's a ps2 for a reason (IMO). Sure there are other reasons some dont have a ps2 anymore and miss the good ps2 games, for me it would be the whole ratchet series, need for speed, FFX, gta3, KH 1 and 2 were the only good games for the ps2 and the ones i would miss playing would be the ratchet series those games were great!

   Re: DXcellence - 2009-07-10
 » um i do

i dont play ps3 games all the time, some people do want to go back and play ps2 games, and it saves us a lot if we can play them on the ps3, and not have to dig up that ps2 you left in closet.
   by Nerveless89 - 2009-07-02
» I don't think Sony will release something like this in a long time

I believe the BC was removed from the PS3 as a marketing tactic. I mean think about it...if the PS3 had he BC people would rather buy the PS3 for the PS2/PS3 package than just a PS2 on its own. The PS2 is still quite a fair bit of money...subtract that from the PS3 and thats how much your getting it for...Remember the PS2 is actually still doing quite well in the markets...the BC would have practically killed most the interest

 » Irony????

Sony is trying to hack their own system...

 » A little feature I'm looking for..

If they do somehow emulate the PS2 using software doesn't that mean that they can perfect the emulation for those of us on HD TV's? The PS2 looks almost close to original on 1080i/p tv's but on 720 they're jaggedy and blocky. I'm only going off of the fact I have a PS1 emulator (ePSXe) on my computer and with a high-end graphic card the games look amazingly vivid and smoothed.
Though what I do hope with their update on this is something small, the ability to still be able to use the XMB menu while playing PS1 or PS2 games (PSN Downloaded or origianl Discs).
I think it'd be pretty cool (if they include the private voice chat also) to be able to talk to my friend while playing my old games so that way I'm having fun with the game and able to communicate.
& Maybe even have the PSN tell my friends list I'm playing a "Playstation 2 Game Disc" or "Playstation Game Disc" right?
