Where's the PS3s?Uh-Oh. It seems that Sony may have fallen quite a bit short again, and by "a bit short", we actually mean "by 20,000 units". As reported by the Japanese business journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun, instead of the promised 100,000 to 150,000 units at launch, Sony will only be able to provide 80,000 units, much to the disappointment of Japanese dealers as well as consumers.

At the moment, pre-orders and reservations are no longer being entertained either at game shops (again, much to the annoyance of dealers who feel that they are missing out on what could have been good business) or even at Sony's own Japanese website. For now, the only way to get yourself a shiny new PS3 would be to camp out on the day of the launch.

Of course, not being able to order it online is probably reasonable on Sony's part, considering the server issues that the company had to deal with back the with the PS2 launch. However, failing to provide adequate number of units to their retailers may not exactly be the best way to make a good impression among businesses. Will Sony be able to pull off a last-minute act and suddenly produce the missing units within the next few weeks? We'll have to wait and see.

Has Sony EVER admitted it screwed up???

Sony said that the SIXAXIS has no rumble because it would interfere with the motion sensing...yet thats not the truth...they got sued...

I wouldn't belive Sony...they lie quite often....

BTW: Just take a look at the SIXAXIS controller craked open...theres ALOT of space wehre the rumble USE to be...

Yeah your right they do lie, so does MS, Nintendo, Sega, and every other company in the world. Its all politics, Sony's honor has an akward place in it all too. If someone sued you and then asked you to bend over and give them more for what they sued you for... what would your honor say? Refuse and turn away let them suffer their conciquence... but what do you say to the populace? Japanese honor, you cannot show weakness to your enemies, to show weakness means you lose honor and either die by enemy hands or suicide to keep your honor.

Is it also a part of "Japanese Honor" to steal others ideas and claim them for your own???

has everyone forgotten that the 360 only had 360,000 units available at *its* launch?

by my counting, the PS3 still has 480,000 units shipping this November.

also, what does it matter in the long run? most of us that want a PS3 will have to wait anyway. the casual gamers, the ones that make a console sell over 100 million units don't show up until at least 2 years after the console launch anyway.

hell, when i fire up my PS2 to play Bully, or Castlevania, or MGS3, i'm not thinking, "damn, back in 2000, Sony only had 500,000 PS2's available at launch!"

considering that i'm not getting a PS3 until March (and, no i don't live in the UK. i'm in Los Angeles, but i'm just not going through the hassle of trying to secure a PS3 this year. it's not worth the stress), i don't care how many units are available at launch.

i can't wait an additional 5 months if it means i'll be able to walk into a store, say, "hey, get me that shiny PS3 on the shelf up there," and walk out of store a satisfied, and non-stressed-from-camping-out-for-24-hours, customer

 » I haven't forgotten...

...but the limited numbers at launch is important news and so it's being reported, just as it was for the 360, and the PS2 back then.

» QJ, are you sure you know what your doing?

I just translated the story from your link, and it doesen't say anywhere than Japan is 20,000 units short!! All its talking about is the fact that Sony Japan won't be offering preorders through its site. Get your facts straight Kristine C.! Please bring Chris C. back! He's the only person who knows what the hell he's talking about.

Translated text German to English:
"Japan: PS3-Erstauslieferungsmenge with approx. 80,000 units

30.10.06 - Sony will be able to deliver only approx. 80,000 consoles in Japan for the sales start of the PlayStation3 to 11.11.06. That writes the trade journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

Originally Sony had planned an initial delivery quantity from 100.000 to at the most 150,000 units. Thus is confirmed a report of 15.10.06, in which Japanese dealers already spoke of only 80,000 consoles.

Meanwhile are ever more dealer annoyed about Sony, which make too few devices available: Like that all Vorbestellungen were platziert in on-line Shop Tsutaya within 6 minutes, so that the business can accept no further reservations at present more. Likewise nearly all other dealers accept no more Vorbestellungen."

But actually supplied the lead that Kristine used in the story :p Gamefront updates blog style (with no permalinks) so it might be that by the time you clicked the lead link the story had been bumped.

That said, we have no official word just yet, but we've been hearing these rumblings for a while.

Okay, I understand now. But its just that no other website have reported this, and it just seems bogus that Sony will cut 20,000 units. By the way, when will you write more of your "opinions" blog? They are really insightful and provide a little break from the medicore to almost good blogs written on this site.

I think you should do a blog on what games are the must haves and which games are in the B list and might become a must have title, for each systems. It would help out alot of undecided people, and would give a second opinion on the games. Thanks once again for your excellent work!

» you want to know why?

because price cuts in japan 399 for the 499 version here in the US, i am willing to bet that the US will get 420,000 units, it's less of a loss by sony.
