Blu-ray discs - Image 1Don't be feeling blue about Blu-ray, because Sony certainly aren't. The revolutionary DVD format which stores up to 50GB of data on a standard disk (even more in some cases) is something essential to the PS3's success, with the PS3 essential to the success of the format in turn.

It might not have the backing of the porn industry but the ever-growing Sony is confident that the robust DVD format will prevail, over HD-DVD. Sony's Chief financial officer Rob Wiesenthal, said "We are feeling really good about Blu-ray right now, but it is early days."

The cynics amongst you may believe that the 'early days' part of the statement refers to the teething problems the blu-ray format has had and the threat of other formats, but Wiesenthal carried on to say that,

In Japan, about 96% of the hardware being sold for high-definition format are coming from the Blu-ray family. It's a format with over 100 different CE manufacturers. Obviously we have the launch coming up in Europe for PS3. So we are feeling very good about that.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it HD-DVD!

 » first post yeaaah

From what I've read on an article a little while back, they've been able to get as much as 200GB on a single Disc, in lab trials.

one company announced they had managed to make a 200gb blueray disc... no flipping idea how you suddenly make a larger disc when the technology is already available... maybe 10 layers or something stupid?!?!?!
But yeh, now that hd-dvd is cracked too, more of the film industries will probably start to back blue ray more...

well done sony...

200gb discs aren't supported by current players and never will be. Someone developed a 7 layer DVD disc but of course players were never built to handle the extra layers.

 » Wrong...

As the Technology Gets Cheaper,More Layered Discs Will Evolve.

The 200GB is Quadra Layer,We are More Likely to see a Triple Layer 150GB Disc Commercially as the Cost of the Technology Falls With Mass-Production.

150GB Should be Enough to Cover Most of Our Needs for 10Years

Triple Layer would be 75GB you idiot.

Blu Ray is 25GB per layer, didn't you get the memo?

   Re: Broken_Hero (Unregistered) - 2007-02-01
 » You are the Idiot..

At TDK the 200GB Disc Prototype is Quadra[4] Layers..50GB per Layer

They can Improve the Amount of Storage Per Layer,as Toshiba Increased the Storage per Layer from 15GB to 17.5GB Without a n Increase in Cost...and toshiba did that Very Early, more Can Be done with Time

With Time and as the Technology is Further Mass-Produced and Gets Cheaper,More Storage can be Implemented per Layer Without a Significant Increase in Cost.

Do a search on google.com for "Quadra Layer" and post me an article. I noticed that one of your crappy posts comes up mentioning it.

This 200GB crap is total PR bull*****. You might as well create a new format, they is no way current players can support it. I haven't even heard any news about a triple layer BR disc (75GB), I doubt it can be done else Sony would of mentioned it by now to counter HD-DVD.

Ok, little correction. They do have porn, Vivd has already released on Blu-Ray. So your wrong in the aspect of they don't have that backing them, Originally porn picked blu-ray first, and then decided to release on Hd-DVD aswell, then the whole rumor going around about Blu-Ray not allowing porn on it, which was false.

   Re: vincent (Unregistered) - 2007-01-31
 » pointless?

if blu-ray is pointless so is hd-dvd. Its called advancement in technology. if its useful or not, one of them is here to stay. these discs arent for movies, games. they're for data storage.

 » no winner yet

It's going to be years before there is a clear winner. It's pretty stupid to say there is one at this point. Consumers will decide based on the selection of movies available for each format.
Also if what was said about blu ray support in Japan is actually true, it doen's mean sh*t in North America. Mini discs were very popular in Japan and never caught on here.

 » all in all

most of my favorite movies are in HD-DVD which pisses me off.
1. fear and loathing
2.12 Monkeys
HD-dvd has more visually impressive movies. why would blue ray come out with chick flicks and dramas at lauch. mean while HD-DVD has constatine and other cool flicks to show off detail and color. blue ray doesnt even have final fantasy spirits within or advent children scheduled to release wtf?

Blu-ray Has Casino Royale and Spider-man 3

Blu-ray Version of FFVII:Advent Children is Confirmed By Sqaure-Enix
