Sony CEO Howard Stringer - Image 1We're all hungry for a PS3 price-cut. No buts, no excuses. Fanboys and haters alike would rejoice when our wish finally comes true. Unfortunately, it's not likely to happen anytime soon. The good thing: Sony CEO Howard Stringer recognizes our pleas.

Stringer told the Financial Times in an interview, "I think that the public would like the cost to be lower, there's no question about that." However, it doesn't seem easy to cut prices when the company is already losing money for every console sold. Asked how much they could cut, he could only answer, "That's what we're studying at the moment; that's what we're trying to refine."

"It’s a good story right now, 'Will PlayStation 3 get to Christmas?' And the answer is, of course it will get to Christmas," he continued after stating we'll hear something about the price drop by Christmas. What good story he's talking about, we can only guess.

Stringer is pretty positive about the PS3's future. Here's his take:

It takes a long time for producers, and more time because of the cost factor, to embrace the full bandwidth of PlayStation 3. It’s only using 20 percent of it right now. And producers will always wait to see how it’s going, and once they use the full bandwidth the games experience is stunning. And their games will get better, so I don't worry about that at all.

Even so, he still acknowledges Nintendo's success with the Wii. "I would be the first to say to you that Nintendo Wii has been a successful enterprise and a very good business model compared to ours... Because it's cheaper," he said.

Beyond that, he doesn't believe the competition's waving stick is more fun than their powerhouse. "Fun is in the eye of the experiencer... I think PlayStation 3 is following a particular trend of 1 and 2, and if you looked at the history of it, it's a very similar history."

Its nice to hear Sony listening to us. But just as Quixand said, its a bargain. Especially for people like me who love video games and new technology. I work a normal retail job and saved up for my ps3 and it has long been paid off. I really don't see what the problem is but whatever. Here's hoping for a price cut so those who aren't willing to spend $600 but want a PS3 can dive in.

 » yeah

i don't even have a job and i got a ps3. Unless you spend your life at the dollar store, $600 is nothing these days.

I paid for my ps3 with pocket change. just started thowin' change in a bottle once the ps3 was anounced, and easily had it paid for once it came out. With inflation the ps3 costs about the same as the genesis and super nes did when they came out. Anyone remember paying almost 200 for the gameboy when it first came out? (yes the monochrome one).

I would have paid it 600$ because in euros it is 450€, but i don't pay it 659€ what is 876$!! Make price cut in europe....

» This guy is a tool...

"The full bandwidth of the PS3...."

What a tool, he has absolutely no clue wtf he is talking about and reads rhetoric provided by PR fawkups....bandwidth is such a general term, what they are not using the full bandwidth of the network adapter because of cable speeds ? the ram bandwidth ? system bus ? what ?

Anyways, a price cut would be sweetass, as I may actually get one then, but still Sony is losing so much on it now, I doubt they will reduce the price soon...

Also, those saying it's a bargain are brainwashed...it's only a bargain as a blu-ray player, otherwise you can get things that perform just as well/better at the same or less amount of money. Video games ? get a 360....linux box ? get a $500 computer.....media center ? buy a $100 modded xbox.....

A jack of all trades is a master of none....

 » Explain your math!

I agree with the beginning of your post. What bandwidth is he talking about? I don't even think that he knows what he means.

On to the end of your post, though.
360 Elite + $480 (Need HDMI + HDD! No Less!!) (If you weren't being biased towards the 360 you would have said build a good PC for better games yet)
Linux Box + $500 (Maybe even a little less)
Media Center + $100

That is $1,080 and you still don't have any means of playing HD-DVD or BD without at least an additional $200 for an add-on USB HD-DVD drive. But if you use the add-on then you don't get the most value out of the sound system that you spent good money on because you wanted it to work well with the rest of the equipment that you spent good money on. This is getting expensive!

The PS3 most definitely is a bargain and no amount of saying otherwise will change that! It's funny that you talk about us being brainwashed when that is what all of the XBOT's are trying to accomplish through their endless rants about how much the PS3 sucks. ALL OF YOU STFU!

Almost all PS3 owners know what we purchased, why we purchased it, and have no remorse for that purchase no matter how much you try to make us feel stupid about it.

 » FOR THE LAST TIME!

Plz understand that SONY has had the PS3 well planned out before they even announced it. They would have already known that they would lose money making it, thus causing them to cancel the PS3 and never release it. It's pointless for a company to waste their money by manufacturing something that they would LOSE money on. Sony isn't losing money on the PS3 (Don't forget wholesale parts and cheap foreign labor). In other words, if they really ARE losing money right now for each unit sold, they are either truly dedicated to their playstation community, or they are willing to take a risk (hopefully both if they ARE losing money).
