Australia - Image 1Chris Jenkins of Australian IT reports that Sony has claimed that in the first ten days the PlayStation 3 was on sale in Australia, the console sold more than 27,000 units and has lead to a retail turnover of AU$ 33 million.

The total sales figures was calculated by industry analyst group GfK and included both hardware and software sales for the PS3. According to them the PS3 sold 27,083 units between March 23 and April 1. GfK analyst Daniel Morse said, the spike in total sales set a new mark for a console. He says, "In a matter of just 10 days, the PlayStation 3 created a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in Australia."

Sony also reportedly claims that PS3 titles infested the top ten selling games during the launch week,  with nine of the ten titles being PS3 titles and the top title being Resistance: Fall of Man.

Despite this being awesomely good news for Sony and those who love pressing the triangle, circle, square, x buttons, one has to note that the PS3 sales figure failed to match the 32,000 that the Wii sold, and moreover, that the Wii sells at a profit. Microsoft on the other hand has sold 100,000 units of their console in its first seven months of release. We don't mean to rain on fan-joy here, we're just looking at both sides of the road.

Judging from those figures, it seems safe to say that while those Aussies may not like going to midnight launches, they do like to buy their consoles.

Time will tell if the PS3 keeps it up in the said region.

I'm happy to here that we here in OZ are making a little noise and showing our contribution... although we don't have the numbers comparable to US, Japan, and anywhere else cause of our population we'r still a dedicated bunch who likes our games...

got my console from the launch... got three games that night... bought another one last week thursday... and going there again today after work to get another one... good thing shops close late on thursdays...

one more thing.. 100,000 in seven months?????!!!! damn!!!

 » hmmm....

I think the Wii had an advantage being released in November/December though, due to Christmas, so its not a bad effort for the PS3.

 » market saturation

Can they sell 100,000 in 7 months? Let me know if that happens, lol.
There's going to be a sharp decline until sony can rush those few remaining exclusive games to market.

 » that's actually a good measure scag...

but u know what in the long run it won't really matter cause even if sony manages to eclipse that mark made by XBox 360 people will just come up with more reasons and excuses.. xbox will say anything to diss sony... they will never accept any success by sony even minor ones...

 » for the LAST time . . .

the wii does not compete with the PS3. it competes with the PS2!! Sony lapped the competition muliple times with the PS2, which is still selling by the way. 360 and Wii have to catch the PS2 before they boast about anything. They're not even HD consoles! And no, the elite is a bastardized HD console so it doesn't count.

When MGS4 drops, xbots and wii-dweebs will be watchin PS3 fans have real fun from the sidelines.

» So why has it dropped 82% in sales then ?

Is that why the PS3 has now dropped by 82% in its sales because its so good, LMAO its a flop and nothing is going to save it, its the Dreamcast of the Next Gen consoles.

You like to only use what fits your needs in an article huh? I think you need to do some more reading and have a bit more comprehension of what is exactly meant. But I will give you a brief explanation, ALL CONSOLES DROP OFF IN SALES AFTER THEIR OPENING!.....
