Sony mum on the alleged rumble controller for the PS3 - Image 1Rumors have been circulating the web regarding the development of a new rumble controller for the PlayStation 3. As of this article's writing, Sony has decided not to confirm this issue, though they haven't seen fit to deny it either.

Innerbits.com announced that they received word from two independent sources at Sony which confirmed that the company was working on rumble controller prototypes. In addition, they also said that development of the controller has been going on for a few months.

This implies that they have been planning this for some time now - despite the fact that Phil Harrison once addressed the gaming populace regarding the lack of a rumble feature. He said that the SIXAXIS controller's features far outweighed the lack of rumble. Unfortunately, quite a few players took umbrage at this.

GamesIndustry.biz was able to contact both SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) and SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) regarding these rumors, and both organizations have declined to say anything about it.

That said, it looks to be very possible that a controller may be heading our way considering that Sony has signed an agreement with Immersion Corporation. If you'll remember, the said company sued Sony some time back for copyright infringement regarding the rumble features of the PS2.

Kaz Hirai from SCE spoke about this new partnership saying that "We [Sony] are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

The future looks bright and rumbly for PS3 owners worldwide, keep checking back here for more updates on this as it develops.

» eh rumble is overrated anyways

the past months of playing without it, I don't even notice it anymore. the sixaxis offers more potential in the long run.

 » I Wish I Had It

I play a lot of games that would be better with it. Games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Formula 1 CE, and just about all old gen Playstation games would have been better with it. I remember when Psycho Mantis for example way back in Metal Gear Solid for the original Playstation said "Put your controller on the floor" and then the controller would shake do to him showing his power would be confusing to people who never played it.

I just thought about something right when I was typing the above statement! I think Sony hasn't released anymore Playstation One games on the Playstation Network because they want to implement the rumble feature to as many as possible so they can experience the games as they meant to be! What else could be holding them up???!!

i agree... i barely notice that it's not there and i'm using my ps3 everynight... the fun/immersive factor is the same with or without the rumble... that is my personal judgment having used both controllers with rumble and without in playing various game genres (i currently have 14 PS3 games RPG, adventure games, sports games, shooters, racers, fighting games, and even mini games via PSN)...

if Sony comes out with one i won't be one of those guys that will "WTF!!! IT'S FU*CKIN RUMBLE!!!!"... it's good that it's there but i might not even get one unless one of my controllers break down... it's not that big a deal for me... i ain't dissin rumble and i ain't speaking for other people... it's just me.

rumble is by farrr the best thing implemented on video games...

followed by the sixaxis....

anyway this is just people's opinions....

I know something better that rumble or sixaxis. its called the Wiimote. The wiimote has rumble, total motion sensing including tilt. there is no way that the sixaxis is better.

True in a lot of ways but everything else is kinda lame compared to everything else next gen today. As of today nothing compares to 1080p on a big screen with epic possibilities getting up to about 50 gigs. One of the biggest things I think is good about the Wii is the Virtual Console. I enjoy a lot of older games and think that they would be a big draw for old school gamers like me.

you can play all those old games on your PC, for free. Or, you can play them on your PSP.

I know and I do but the Virtual Console probably plays them best, at least more close to the original experience.

» Yeah but its like when ps1 first came out

then they released dual shock controllers and like resident evil came out compatible with it. I wouldn't mind buying a rumble, bluetooth, six axis controller

Its a perfect mix having both. It'll get me even more into a game.
Anyways I hear in august a Tokyo show will show off the PS3 with rumble. I also hear that killzone 2 might have it. And Mgs4- konami wants rumble for the Anti-Personnel sensor & other gadgets. Thats why the release date is later now

 » Rumble and batteries

I, too, look forward to a rumble-enabled SIXAXIS controller (what I will now referr to as a SIXAXIS-Shock), but unless there is some improvements in battery technology, the SIXAXIS-Shock will likely have a similar "lump" in the middle like the 360 controller to house more battery cells (or a larger single cell). Requiring Nyko to redesign their 4-port controller charging station.

If Sony doesn't put a larger battery in there, then that leaves it open to 3rd parties to come up with a clip-on battery that plugs into the USB port of the SIXAXIS-Shock to provide more battery life to make up for the rumble motors eating power like candy.

Note, if something like the SIXAXIS-Shock comes to fruition, expect people to start complaining about it's weight. (Especially after getting used to how light the original SIXAXIS controllers are.) Adding 2 motors and a larger battery will likely make it 1.5 to 2 times heavier than a standard DualShock...

Even so, I don't mind the weight of past controllers and if that is the case, I can except it.

 » Ehhhh

GREAT I BUY 5 CONTROLLERS JUST FOR THEM TO COME OUT WITH A NEW ONE... Who really needs rumble, not me like for n64 would you really pay money for a rumble pack LOL ridiculous unless they add something more than just rumble I will not buy this controller. If I wanted to add a little extra to my gaming experience I will just turn my surround sound up to 50 and let the bass rumble me

Rumble isnt a real biggy for me but i will by two as i have two regular sixaxis controllers now, if they cant fix their battery problem and they do enlarge the battery it wont end up like the 360 controller, ive open'd my controler and if they doubled the size of the battery it would only chunk the center back portion out another 5mm at most, so it'll be a bit heavier and a tiny bit chunkier but it will still be very reasonable and as for the motors most of you know there is a big empty space where they used to be so there wont be any enlarging there.

 » my theory

Maybe sony's just lying to you again to try to round up some last minute PS3 sales to try to win the blu ray format war before they officially drop PS3 and screw over loyal gamers for the last time.

Wasn't that the whole purpose of the PS3?

» Regarding Common Sense's Post above

Hi Everyone,
I've noticed that, in the wake of a spate of moderately good news for Sony, Mister Common Sense's posts have been getting increasingly sophomoric and childish, as if he/she is getting more and more desperate about something.

Anybody else notice this?

Regards,
MTK
